I don't think any team goes into the mindset specifically of "let's just win 8 games".

But in today's NFL As long as you can keep the team around .500, you are in the hunt. In the hunt keeps the fans interested and invested.

Whether that's the goal or not is debatable...but nobody can look at their situation and say they are pushing for a title. That's not even up for debate. We have a handful of players with high base salaries that could create space over the amount we started at.

The Saints were over the cap and found a way to add Byrd while still locking up Graham. The Broncos have added 3 major pieces while still paying their QB more than 20/yr. The Seahawks signed Jared Allen.

Did we even try to sign Jarius Byrd? How about TJ Ward (who was much more affordable at just over 5/yr) ...I mean these guys do realize the weakness we have at safety, right?

You keep saying that as if we can have some kind of restructure mardi gras. There are consequences to constantly converting base into a signing bonus, especially if you're talking about 3rd contract players who still have a lot of guaranteed money left on their contract. And for what? To mortgage the future because of this current 2-year window, as if a Safety suddenly puts us neck-and-neck with a restocked Broncos team?

BossChief 03-23-2014 10:39 AM

Between Bowe, Berry, Hali and Flowers we have about 30 million in base salaries alone.

If we had pushed a few of the chips in (not making an all in move, simply raising the bet) we could have easily cleared 15 million in additional cap space and went out and added TJ Ward, Lamaar Houston and Emmanuel Sanders/Desean Jackson to this roster and really made some waves next season.

I don't want to hear a peep about the cap. The cap is blowing up and we have a handful of players and a fanbase that DESERVE a REAL run at a championship. Especially after trading for a 30 year old quarterback.

How did the Broncos get that way??? They were shit the year Cassle & Co won the division. Look at them now...Look at the Chiefs. Different philosophies yield different results. The Chiefs have been following your example for awhile and what has it gotten them? Its time they changed their approach. They need to find a way to build on success, like the Saints, Broncos etc., rather than falling off the face of the earth the year after they make the playoffs. Shit gets old....

Hali and Flowers are guaranteed a combined $20+M this year. For all intents and purposes... GUARANTEED. They are two players who could negotiate a contract today that assumes they are still at their peak. This is the definition of mortgaging our future because it forces us to overpay old guys and handcuff us to bad contracts when they're 33.

And the cap does matter. You keep bringing up the new salary cap as if players aren't getting massive payraises in anticipation of the new cap. Or as if filling multiple gaps in free agency is such a proven model of success.

When the Chiefs get a HOF QB who single-handedly upgrades the entire roster 10-fold, call me. The idea that we should build our team around Alex Smith the same way we should around Peyton Manning or Drew Brees is beyond silly.

Also, as of right now, the Chiefs are in position to collect on multiple comp picks. Next year, with a significantly better free agency pool that could include guys like JJ Watt and Earl Thomas, we will have a shitload of money to spend. Our team will be competitive in 2014. With 17 picks in 2 years and a shitload of money to tinker with next year, we could become a legit contender by 2015. I think you're kidding yourself if you think Sanders and/or Byrd suddenly puts us neck-and-neck with the Broncos or Seahawks.

You might want to check your math.

That's just dumb. Sorry.

We traded for a 30 year old quarterback on a team with RIPE TALENT ....you've been saying for months that they should wait a couple years to make a push and that's dumb.

Hali
Bowe
Flowers
Charles

That's the list of guys that your plan says goodbye to and will need replacing to have your plan with any chance to work out.

Um, what? These guys are going to cost us $20M+ against our cap. Unless you really think the Chiefs are going to take a $6-7M haircut a piece to cut these guys, which they clearly won't.

If you have a GM that can't replace 4 players in 2 years with 17 picks and a shitload of cap space, then you don't belong in the business. Especially since we're not starting from scratch. We have plenty of young guys to work with.

Your idea that adding a few topline free agents to surround Alex Smith suddenly turns us into a Super Bowl winner is equally dumb.

O.city 03-23-2014 11:09 AM

Really though, if you were going to make a push with those guys, it probably should have Ben in 09.

Outside of Charles, I dunno that those guys as great as we build them to be

So, you think it's reasonable to expect John Dorsey to draft 4 probowl quality players at CRUCIAL positions in 2 years JUST TO KEEP ON PAR WITH WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE IN PLACE?

Word to the wise...we don't have a second rounder this year and next years draft is gonna suck.

Nobody said those moves would make us a superbowl winner....but they would definitely help us get closer to that prize.

With our current safeties, the thought that we can run with the other teams in the playoffs is laughable...that's the whole point.
