A chainsaw is safer than that lithium-ion bomb.

That old saw blasts through big logs without breathing hard. I have since bought a saw that I think maybe the same as yours. 55cc? Mine will take a 20" blade, yours?.

You know what they say: " Buy the best and only cry once."

I've had to do some searching ... I thought the Stihl 029 (It's not the "Super")
was smaller than what you mentioned. but, it is 54.1 CC. Yes, on 20".

Anyway sorry to have de-railed.

I will say I agree with Beuhler most chainsaws will do very well if you take care and keep chain sharp and cleaned of pitch. Cedar is sappy and is a bastard on saws found that out clearing centerline for Wilson Creek National Battlefield in Republic Mo.

Not to worry ... "de-rails" are fun too.

Way back in the dark ages I worked on the "chain crew" of the county engineering. We didn't have chainsaws back then ... only the blades and axes. We were only surveying roads and doing the "compaction tests." When I see sink holes on new roads I know what caused it.

Yep! At least that is what I found ... up to 20".

Thanks guys! You guys were helpful. The saw has not been running well and one reason I'm considering buying a larger saw. Early on I would take it in and get it serviced about once a year. The owner of the shop passed away and I didn't see another Stihl shop, so it has not been serviced in a while.

After reading the "wisdom" here ... I'm thinking of taking a chance (may be better off to put the service charge on a new saw???), take it in for servicing and if it checks out buy an 18" or 20" bar and new chains.

A shorter bar is good for get in the thick of things and dropping branches and cutting to manageable size. Its more maneuverable and safer like in storm debris. Once you got it broke down and cleaned up the longer bar is ideal for busting down the trunk in manageable lengths. Most likely the tree trimmer that drops your tree will take the limbs put in pile then drop the trunk starting from top in segments. Really dont know how much you will really save as the easy part is a boom lift and putting it in container. Instead of chip and shred on spot. Id have bid on dropping it and cutting to sizes you can handle vs him drop and haul it away. Also last I checked some home depot with rentals rent chain saws in larger bar length.

You have to go aftermarket on those big bars. Stihls are too flexible if you're felling a big tree, although they are fine for bucking it on the ground. Almost any tree can be dropped with a much shorter bar with the right technique.

Yeah I was just flippin the shit on Coop he likes those long bars. I have never used a powersaw with a bar longer than 24". He was smirking at my Homelite Textron XL. The man in the video below is bucking fir with a homelite XL model 76 like I rave about at work. I love my little Home at Nite saw.

Impressive but when you get any big saw with a Skip tooth chain it's going to kick ass. It is a pro grade chain, yellow not green in Stihl terms

i didn't diss your Homelight,
I actually used my neighbors climbing saw to thin my oaks, and it was a duel trigger model. I would not use that beast, chain like tat would cut your dick off twice before severing your head.

I had already corrected the blade size on the 045 to 26, it was a typo but I don't own a small saw just a 75cc (26) and a 55cc (16). My father in law had a old Canadian 36" that I got running. (He wouldn't let me used it after I got it running) He sold that saw probably within a week.

I even suggested that the little Stihl's are bad asses and I mentioned expensive but I didn't diss your Homie..

But don't recall giving you shit except about the Wards saw, the 55 MPH chainsaw motor? Yes. I know they are great motors just takes a lot to get 12K RPMs out of an 7K (spec is 8) engine.

I bought a Homelite string trimmer from Home Depot years ago that was a useless POS from day one. I finally got so frustrated with it one day I snapped it across my leg and smashed it into the ground. Will never buy anything with that brand name on it ever again.

Westbend actually made logging chainsaws back in the day wards had saws made for them by many manufactures like Pioneer and Doomey same as Sears. Westbend motors and Macs were the choice of many go carters some racers got 70 mph out of a single 2 cycle motor.

Textron sold Homelite around 1994 and they went to shit. I am pretty sure they are now out of business but may be wrong. My Dad had a Mac 10/10 in fact its still in my Moms garage may have to try to see if it still will spark up.

My Toro TC5000 is still a bad ass machine 25 years later. I used it mainly for brush after getting my Shihl so now it's like never, It takes a blade looks like this. Nice name huh?

Did you see the RPMs and the new old stock engine? That engine ran sno mobiles, carts, saw and milling saws and post hole diggers... Shit it was 8HP at 7K rpm and rated highter.

THat same design is still made by another company.

This is a bad ass AB 820. note the expansion chamber.:D:D
