Its called hand length, not hand span. I'm trying to get someone to confirm on Twitter. Pretty sure I'm right. if I'm wrong a ton of players in the nfl have tiny hands

how do you even measure pinky to thumb?

Why? I'm not getting why you think the pinky to thumb measurement is better for a QB than the palm to middle finger. A QB is NEVER going to have his hand stretched like that while holding the ball. Having a large hand (pinky to thumb-wise) won't help you grip the ball any better. But having a large hand (palm to MF) will.

Hand length is an almost completely useless measure. The combine calls it HAND SIZE, which could be either but most people seem to think it is hand span. I have yet to find an authoritative source for it though.

http://www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/hand-span.htm

purpose: The size of the hand is advantageous for some sports which involve catching, gripping or tackling.
equipment required: flat surface and ruler or tape measure
procedure: The hand is placed palm down on a flat surface. The fingers are outstretched as far as possible. Measure the linear distance between the outside of the thumb to the outside of the little finger.

nice

that jumps me up to 9.4

Hootie 02-22-2013 08:21 PM

BossChief has bigger hands than E.J. Manual.

Riiight. That's a tough one for me to believe.

I don't trust top end sports. every where you look has different opinions

And here we have the NYTIMES on my side as well...

From thumb to pinkie, Gronkowski’s hands measure 10 ¾ inches — nearly as long as a football.

Why would hand span be any more useful though? QBs don't grip the ball with their fingers outstretched. Hand length matters because the longer the hand the more you can get it around the ball and be able to grip it better.

Not really, I have looked and it's about 20 to 1 ratio of people claiming it is span over length. And the NY TIMES is usually a pretty reliable source...
