Hmm, now that's an interesting thought. And then we could throw the current Chiefs roster in there as a baseline.

I suspect it might be a fair amount of work right now, but when we crank up another league I might be able to talk cdcox into it.

Oh wait - do we have to cutdown to 53 tonight?

Yes! Good point!

wazu 09-04-2013 09:49 PM

Alex Smith
Brock Osweiler (Broncos)
Geno Smith (Jets)

Chase Daniel
Mark Sanchez (Jets)

RB
Jamaal Charles
Anthony Sherman

WR
Dwayne Bowe
Donnie Avery
Tavon Austin (Rams)
Rishard Matthews (Dolphins)
AJ Jenkins

TE
Travis Kelce

Branden Albert
Eric Winston
Donald Stephenson

G
Jon Asamoah
Geoff Schwartz
David DeCastro (Steelers)

C
Rodney Hudson

K
Ryan Succop

P
Dustin Colquitt

S
Eric Berry
Geroge Iloka (Bengals)
Hasain Abdullah
Quintin Demps

CB
Brandon Flowers
Sean Smith
Dunta Robinson
Jordan Poyer (Eagles)

OLB
Tamba Hali
Justin Houston
Ricky Sapp (Jets)

ILB
Derrick Johnson
Vontaze Burflict (Bengals)
Frank Zombo

Alameda Ta'amu (Cardinals)
Jesse Williams (Seahawks) - IR

Rain Man 09-04-2013 11:07 PM

My 53-man roster. Cuts are shown below.

QB
Russell Wilson (Seahawks)
Geno Smith (Jets)
Tyler Bray
Tyler Wilson (Raiders)

I was hoping to see more out of the rookies, but they have time to develop behind my sophomore phenom. We're young here, but with potential.

HB
Jamaal Charles
C.J. Spiller. (Bills)
Denard Robinson (Jaguars)

We'll see how Robinson develops, but I'm incredibly strong here.

FB/H-Back
Travis Kelce (Chiefs)

It may have been a mistake to not draft a fullback. Let's see what you can do, Travis.

WR
Dwayne Bowe
Kendall Wright (Titans)
WR Donnie Avery
Leonard Hankerson (Redskins)

I like my starters in Bowe and Wright, and Avery will fit right into the slot. Hankerson is a good fourth receiver but it would be nice to have a fifth receiver.

TE
Tony Gonzalez (Falcons)
Anthony Fasano
Kevin Brock

Lots of depth here. Maybe Tony can split out wide sometimes.

OT
Branden Albert
Eric Winston
Menelik Watson (Raiders)
Geoff Schwartz

We're okay here since Winston is starting. And Watson may be an up and comer at the position.

G
Wade Smith
Alex Boone (49ers)
Brian Waters
Jason Pinkston (Browns)

Good talent and depth. Wade was a pro bowler last year. No problems at all here. And my patience with Brian Waters has paid off, oddly.

C
Rodney Hudson (Chiefs)

I hope he develops. Worst case, if he doesn't or if he gets hurt I can move Wade Smith easily into this position.

K
Alex Henery (Eagles)

Perfectly fine.

P
Dustin Colquitt

Pro bowler.

FS
Baccari Rambo (Redskins)
Kendrick Lewis

Wow! I got a new starter to replace Kendrick Lewis, and I got him cheap!

SS
Reshad Jones (Dolphins)
Quinton Demps

I'm very strong here as Jones is a rising star. Depth? Demps will do.

CB
Brandon Flowers
Alphonso Dennard (Patriots)
CB Sean Smith
CB Dunta Robinson
D.J. Moore (Bears)
Jordan Poyer (Eagles)

We're strong here, and I'm pleased with my drafting.

OLB
Tamba Hali
Zach Brown (Titans)
Dekoda Watson (Buccaneers)
LB Frank Zombo
Chris Carter (Steelers)

This unit is coming together. Hali and Brown are strong starters, and Watson is now a starter. Plus Zombo and Carter are solid backups.

ILB
Derrick Johnson
Rey Maualuga (Bengals)
AJ Klein (Panthers)

I like Klein as a backup and my starters are strong.

DE
DE Mike DeVito
DE Alex Carrington (Bills)
Da'Quan Bowers (Buccaneers)
Ropati Pitoitua
Jonathan Massaquoi (Falcons)

We're going 3-4 this year with DeVito and Carrington as decent starters. My depth is pretty weak.

NT
Star Lotulelei (Panthers)
Brandon Williams (Ravens)
Jesse Williams (Seahawks)
Anthony Toribio

Lots of rookies. Moving Star into a starting role.

Overall, I think we're pretty strong. Our strengths are the offensive backfield and LBs, and I've managed to put together a good defensive backfield with a small investment. However, the offense is the focus of the team right now with a fair amount of speed, youth, and firepower.

Our weaknesses are the defensive line, which is pretty unproven and thin despite numerous high draft pick investments, and our OL is okay but no great shakes. I'm hoping that my three rookie defensive linemen will make a fast transition to the pros.

Hard Cuts:

FS Hasain Abdullah
TE Steve Maneri
OT Tommie Draheim
OLB Dezmon Moses

Easy Cuts:

QB Mark Sanchez (Jets)
QB Chase Daniel 3 years
QB Jimmy Clausen (Panthers)
HB Shaun Draughn
HB Nate Eachus
FB Ryan D'Imperio
FB Peyton Hillis
WR Mardy Gilyard
WR Greg Salas (Rams)
WR Steve Breaston
TE Kevin Boss
RT Bruce Campbell (Raiders/Panthers)
LG Lilja, Ryan
FS Charles Mitchell (Falcons)
FS Travis Daniels
SS Abram Elam
SS Tysyn Hartman
CB Stanford Routt
OLB Andy Studebaker
OLB Chad Kilgore
ILB Brandon Siler
DE Ronnell Lewis (Lions)
DT Marcus Dixon
DT Ron Edwards
WR Chad Hall
TE Sean McGrath
NT Jaye Howard
OLB Josh Martin
ILB James-Michael Johnson
CB Marcus Cooper
CB Ron Parker

Rain Man 09-04-2013 11:11 PM

As a reminder, you can add to your roster any free agents the Chiefs added during training camp before you cut to 53. Those include:

WR Chad Hall
TE Sean McGrath
NT Jaye Howard
OLB Josh Martin
ILB James-Michael Johnson
CB Marcus Cooper
CB Ron Parker
SS Quinton Demps
QB Tyler Bray

patteeu 09-05-2013 08:05 PM

I think we need to decide whether we're accepting the trades for Edgar Jones and Jonathan Baldwin. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm accepting both.

Here is my 53 man roster:

QB
Alex Smith
Chase Daniel
Tyler Bray

* Out with the trash, in with hope.

RB
Jamaal Charles
Bernard Pierce (Ravens)
Cyrus Gray
Knile Davis (R)

* Davis is my only addition here.

FB
Ryan D'Imperio

* Not happy with my FB situation, obviously.

WR
Dwayne Bowe
Donnie Avery
Dexter McCluster
A. J. Jenkins
Terrance Williams (Cowboys #4) (R)
Josh Boyce (New England #4) (R)

* I parted ways with David Reed after he bounced around from the bottom of one depth chart to the bottom of another for a few years. I'm hoping that Williams or Boyce will fare better. I'm not optimistic about Jenkins, but at least he's not Baldwin.

TE
Anthony Fasano
Julius Thomas (Broncos)
Demetrius Harris

* I like the idea of converting a college basketball player to TE. In the meantime, I have a couple of serviceable to good vets.

OT
Branden Albert
Nate Potter (Cardinals)
Terron Armstead (R)
Oday Aboushi (R)

* I sure hope the Chiefs sign Albert long term. If not, chances are good that I'll be revisiting the offensive line in next year's draft, although the rookies might pan out.

G
Jon Asamoah
David DeCastro (Steelers)
Kraig Urbik (Bills)

* I think I'm set at guard.

C
Rodney Hudson

* I'm still optimistic here.

K
Ryan Succop

P
Dustin Colquitt

* No big worries at either kicker position and Colquitt should be set for a while with his new contract.

FS
Kendrick Lewis
Hasain Abdullah
Sanders Comings (R) *IRdtR*

* I'm not sure if Commings is a FS or a SS, but I listed him here.

SS
Eric Berry

* I'm too thin at SS, but at least he's a good one.

CB
Brandon Flowers
Alterraun Verner (Titans)
Johnny Patrick (Saints)
Marcus Cooper
Ron Parker

* I like my CBs a lot.

OLB
Tamba Hali
Justin Houston
Frank Zombo
Cornellius Carradine (49ers) (R) (NFI)
Josh Martin

* I've got solid starters here, and when Carradine comes back from his non-football injury, I'm hopeful that he can be a third pass rushing stud.

ILB
Derrick Johnson
Sean Lee (Cowboys)
James-Michael Johnson
Vince Williams (Steelers) (R)

* This is another strength area. Top notch starters with promising younger backups.

DE
Tyson Jackson
Sheldon Richardson (Jets) (R)
Mike DeVito
Kendall Reyes (Chargers)
Karl Klug (Titans)

* If $Rich pans out, this position group could move from serviceable to a strength area.

NT
Anthony Toribio
Jaye Howard
Alameda Ta'amu (Cardinals)

* I'm pretty weak at NT

Cuts:
Eric Winston
Kevin Boss
Steve Breaston
Matt Cassel
Brady Quinn
Ricky Stanzi
Nate Eachus
Peyton Hillis
Ryan Lilja
Abram Elam
Stanford Routt
Andy Studebaker
Shaun Draughn
Ryan Swope *retired*
Sean McGrath
Steve Manari
David Reed
Matt Tennant
DeQuan Menzie
Justin Cole
Demorrio Williams
Brandon Siler
Eric Bakhtiari
Jerrell Powe
Marcus Dixon
Chad Hall
Quinton Demps
Akeem Jordan
Wallace Gilberry

wazu 09-05-2013 08:56 PM

Note: I added Bray. Mistake omission.

Good point, assuming you have them. I didn't draft Baldwin, and cut Jones a while back, so no decisions for me.

Rain Man 10-08-2013 10:39 AM

I wish I hadn't cut Marcus Cooper, Sean McGrath, and Ron Parker.

Rain Man 10-08-2013 10:43 AM

Dang, patteeu, you're building a pretty darn good defense.

I couldn't remember whether I cut Marcus Cooper and Ron Parker or not. I'm glad to see that I didn't.

It's a shame I let Sean McGrath go, but I got lucky on Julius Thomas so I'll take that.

NT is still a pretty big weakness on my defense. David DeCastro had better pan out on the OL to help me forget that I passed on Dontari Poe.

Rain Man 03-30-2014 03:36 PM

A review of my team's draft this year. Recall that we traded out of the #1 pick at significant cost to pick up more lower picks.

All in all, I hit first-round gold and got some production out of my lower picks. My mid-round picks were a disaster in their rookie year, though.

Round 1, Pick 13 - Star Lotulelei, DT (Panthers)

Started every game, played well, and got a couple of DROY votes. Filled a huge need on my team. Grade: A

Round 2, Pick 34 - Geno Smith, QB (Jets)

Started every game, but it was a learning year. He's my second-string QB and hopefully he'll improve with experience. Grade: C-

Round 2, Pick 39 - Menelik Watson, OT (Raiders)

Had some nagging injuries that cost him the chance to shine. Started only three games even with injuries to Veldheer. Perhaps he'll blossom next year. Grade: D

Round 3, Pick 63 - Travis Kelce, TE (Chiefs)

Total injury bust in Year One. Grade: F

Round 3, Pick 72 - Brandon Williams, DT (Ravens)

This one hurt. He saw very little action this year, and I drafted him after strongly considering both Keenan Allen and John Jenkins. Grade: D-

Round 3, Pick 96 - Tyler Wilson, QB (Raiders)

Huge bust. Grade: F.

Round 4, Pick 99 - Denard Robinson, RB/KR (Jaguars)

I don't know what happened here. I took him as a high-risk, high-reward play, and he was looking promising in preseason. But then he almost never saw the field once the season started. Grade: D-

Round 5, Pick 134 - Jesse Williams, DT (Seahawks)

Went on IR in preseason. Grade: F

Round 5, Pick 141 - A.J. Klein, ILB (Panthers)

Actually got a couple of starts and made some tackles, mostly on special teams, I think. But still, he made the team. Grade: B

Round 6, Pick 170 - Bacarri Rambo, FS (Redskins)

He actually won the starting job in preseason and I was quite hopeful, but got demoted three weeks later. He's still better than Kendrick Lewis. Grade: A-

Round 6, Pick 204 - Jordan Poyer, CB (Eagles)

Got cut by the team that drafted him, and had a good punt return average with the Browns in limited action. At least he's still in the league. Grade: B-

patteeu 03-30-2014 07:16 PM

Here's how my draft looked after the first year. I had a strong first round pick but then my draft nose dives pretty quickly in terms of first year production. Several players suffered injuries (or were drafted with injuries) and I have hope that some of them will bounce back and turn into nice players. Some of them look like pure busts.

1.13 (13) - Sheldon Richardson DT (Jets)

Finished as PFF's 5th rated 3-4 DE. Had 4 sacks and was a wall against the run. Lost a couple votes to Star Lotulelei on his way to winning DROY award. Not the biggest hole on my team, but despite losing Tyson Jackson this off-season it has become a strength. Grade: A

2.07 (39) - Cornellius Carradine DE (49ers)

Carradine spent his first season on injury lists and making no impact. Given the quality players ahead of him on the depth chart, he's likely to be a role player in 2014. If this pick is going to pan out, it's probably going to be another year away. For now... Grade: F

3.01 (63) - Terrance Williams WR (Cowboys)

Williams had a decent rookie season starting 8 games and catching 44 passes for 736 yards and 5 touchdowns. This was a huge hole for my team so that production was welcome. With a chance to go into the upcoming season as Dallas' #2 WR, we're hoping for a good sophomore season. Grade: B-

3.10 (72) - Terron Armstead OT (Saints)

Armstead started 2 games as a rookie and looks likely to take over as the Saints' starting LT this year. Not much rookie production for a 3rd round pick. Grade: D

3.34 (96) - Knile Davis RB

Davis rushed for 242 yards and 4 TDs in limited action behind Jamaal Charles. He had a pretty good game going in the playoffs after Charles went down with a concussion, but then then he broke. His injury riddled history has me very concerned. Grade: D+

4.02 (99) - Josh Boyce WR (Patriots)

Boyce was drafted with a toe injury so he got off to a slow start his rookie season. He started 3 games but only caught 9 passes for 121 yards. Grade: D+

5.01 (134) - Sanders Commings CB

Missed almost the entire season with injuries. Grade: F

5.08 (141) - Oday Aboushi OT (Jets)

Aboushi didn't see the field and will have an uphill battle for playing time in 2014 as far as I can tell. Grade: F

6.02 (170) - Ryan Swope WR (retired)

Retired. Grade: F

6.36 (204) - Vince Williams LB (Steelers)

Williams started 11 games as a rookie which seems like a win for a 6th rounder. Grade: B

wazu 04-04-2014 02:22 PM

1-7: Tavon Austin, WR (Rams)

Early returns not good. Only played about 50% of offensive snaps and didn't crack 500 yards. Did show some flashes of the crazy athletic ability that got me to pick him, but also dropped too many passes. Possible McCluster-type, which would be disastrous as a high first round pick. Grade: D+

2-38: Geno Smith, QB (Jets)

Coming along quite nicely. Played all 16 games his rookie year. Struggled at times but finished relatively strong. I'll take it for a second round pick when my team is searching for it's franchise QB. Grade: B-

3-63: Travis Kelce, TE (Chiefs)

So far appears to be more fragile than Moeaki. Grade: F

3-96: Tyler Wilson, QB (Raiders)

Sweet merciful mother. Grade: F

5-134: Jesse Williams, DT (Seahawks)

Training Camp IR. Grade: F

6-170: John Boyett, S (Colts)

This is the guy who had the great story last September where he told cops, "You can't arrest me; I'm a Colts player" and then got cut right after. Naturally he is now a Denver Bronco, albeit as a practice squad player. Grade: F

6-204: Jordan Poyer, CB (Eagles)

Like Rainman said, he's still in the league and produced some as a rookie. I'll take the same grade: B-

Nice pick. I was a Star guy the whole way and never considered Richardson.

Rain Man 04-04-2014 09:58 PM

I love this time of year. My draft needs:

Huge Need

Fullback - Need a starter. I've got no one.
Tight end - Need a starter. Tony Gonzalez is retiring and his depth is Fasano.
Offensive tackle - Probably need a starter. Losing Albert and Schwartz and my starters will be Eric Winston and Menelik Watson
Free Safety - Need a starter. Baccari Rambo and Kendrick Lewis aren't solutions.
Outside Linebacker. Need a starter. I've got Hali, but all my other guys are backups.
Defensive End. I can't seem to solve this problem. Need a starter. I've got Devito and Alex Carrington, and some backups. Plus Pitoitua if he started.

Moderate Need

Quarterback - Need a backup. I've got Russell Wilson.
Wide receiver - Need a #2 or #3 if I can't find hidden gold. I've got Bowe and Kendall Wright starting.
Nose Tackle - Need depth, most likely, but maybe one of last year's rookies will step up. I have Lotulelei starting.

Mild Need

Guard - Need some depth. Got Wade Smith and Alex Boone. Brian Waters is retiring.
Cornerback - Need a dime back, but I'm good with Flowers, Alphonso Dennard, and Sean Smith.

No Need

Halfback - No need other than deep depth. I've got Jamaal and CJ Spiller.
Center - Need some depth. I've got Rodney Hudson.
Kicker - Fine. Got Henery.
Punter - Fine. Got Colquitt.
Strong Safety - Maybe some depth. I've got Reshad Jones.
Inside Linebacker. Fine. I've got DJ and Maualuga.

What was the Dolphins deal? I'm just curious about the extra second round pick. (Not being a lawyer or anything, I'm just curious.)

chiefscafan 04-05-2014 01:26 PM

its the alex smith trade I never made it so I have the two picks. Also had the trade with the jets last year.

Dolphins picks were the pioli trade for the o lineman

chiefscafan 04-05-2014 01:43 PM

wow only two real players out of 2009 draft rest are out of the league

chiefscafan 04-30-2014 11:45 AM

ok since we are allowed to trade once i'm taking that option and trading the number 23 to Houston or Washington for at least a second and third and whatever else is fair value whichever team has the better deal

You can use the draft chart in the original post to calculate the trade value of the #23 pick. Since we're working with perfect information, we have to discount the trade value significantly, so if you're going to trade down, multiply the point value of the #23 pick by 0.65. You can then pick up that many points' worth of picks from the team you're trading to.

As an example, the #23 pick is normally worth 760 points. You multiply that by .65 and you can trade it to Houston in return for picks worth 494 points.

Houston holds the following tradable picks (compensatory picks cannot be traded):

1-1 (1st pick) = 3000 points
2-1 (33rd) = 580 points
3-1 (65th) = 265 points
4-1 (101st) = 96 points
5-1 (141st) = 35.5 points
6-1 (177th) = 21.6 points
6-5 (181st) = 20 points
7-1 (216th) = 6 points

So your 494 points can buy you Houston's 3rd, 4th, 5th, both 6ths, and a 7th since they add up to less than that amount. However, you can't get their 2nd since it costs 580 points.

If you want their 2nd, you'd have to come up with more points, but that would make no sense. You could do that, but's not going to be worth it. Trade downs in this game have to be at a significant penalty, because otherwise we'd always trade down a few spots to get our guy and keep picking up extra picks.

chiefscafan 04-30-2014 03:12 PM

I heard a trade Washington would trade second, third, fourth for 23 why can't i do that?

That doesn't make since that I'd only be able to get a third and fourth from the 23 why the heck would chiefs do that . Sorry that doesn't make since to trade up Washington would have to give up at least second and third rounder.

He explained it when he pointed out that without a steep discount in what you can get back for a trade, trades could easily be abused in this game.

We don't have anyone looking out for Washington's interests here. Who knows what goes into whatever it is that you heard. Maybe it's misinformation. Maybe it's true, but only if some specific player is available when the 23rd pick comes up.

chiefscafan 04-30-2014 03:24 PM

Ok but that makes no sense and isn't reality that a team would trade their one for a third and fourth. Sorry that's where your scale is flawed I'm also trading before the draft that should be higher value according to what you said. If a team trades down in first usually involve second and some other picks

Right, it's not reality, it's alternate reality. And I agree, there's no reason to trade a 1st for a 3rd + 4th.

Personally, I would have been fine if we outlawed trades altogether because we never have anyone on the other side of the trade making sure it makes sense for the other team. But I'm OK with what we decided. Last year, I'm not sure any team would have traded up into the 1.1 for even a discounted rate of 65%.

chiefscafan 04-30-2014 04:08 PM

Fine I'll keep the pick then no way am I trading first for a third and fourth

Yeah, the challenge in a game like this is that if you know exactly who is being drafted at what pick, you can get much more value out of your picks. For example, if you would draft a guy at #23 and you know for a fact that he will be there at #30, you can trade down at market value and pick up an extra pick in the process. In real life, you don't know the guy will be available at #30, so if you value him you won't trade down. So we have to eliminate the exploitation of having perfect knowledge.

If we made trades before the NFL draft, perhaps we could do it at market value without the discount because the perfect knowledge isn't there yet. I think we talked about that at some point and decided that it wasn't worth having to monitor when trades occurred. But even then, as patteeu mentioned, we don't have anyone monitoring the interests of the trading team, so we just shrugged and kept the post-NFL system.

Yep, it's that time. We need to list our draft choices.

Man, I haven't prepared at all this year. I hope I don't Pioli myself out of contention.

patteeu 05-15-2014 01:26 PM

Due to free agency so far, I assume we lose:

Branden Albert T
Jon Asamoah G
Quintin Demps FS
Tyson Jackson DE
Akeem Jordan ILB
Kendrick Lewis FS
Dexter McCluster WR
Jerrell Powe NT
Geoff Schwartz G

and I assume we have the option to add:

Cory Grissom DT
Otis Hudson G
Jeffrey Linkenbach G
Joe Mays ILB
Chris Owens CB
Vance Walker DT

with these guys still in limbo:

Terrance Copper WR
Chad Hall WR
Jerrell Jackson WR
Dunta Robinson CB
Anthony Toribio DT

patteeu 05-15-2014 01:27 PM

Boy, I'm hurting at offensive tackle with seemingly slim pickings in the draft.

Rain Man 05-15-2014 01:59 PM

Thanks for the free agency update.

Losing Albert is going to hurt all of us, I think. And yeah, I don't think any of the Tier 1 tackles dropped far enough for us to draft one.

I kept Eric Winston but he's been cut, so I may be out of luck on both tackle spots. I better hope that Menelik Watson starts in Oakland this year.

chiefscafan 05-15-2014 04:10 PM

I kind of prepared for it but yes tackles gonna hurt everyone

chiefscafan 05-15-2014 04:25 PM

Ok I never cut my draft pick I forgot to add him this upcoming season lee Ziemba is still on my team.

Rain Man 05-17-2014 10:17 PM

Okay, so the base draft of the Chiefs this year is...

1-23
2-56, but only if you did not accept the Alex Smith trade
3-87
4-124
5-163
6-193 minus the 7-238, but only if you had Edgar Jones on your roster and accept the trade with the Cowboys
6-200
7-238 unless you had Edgar Jones on your roster and accept the trade with the Cowboys

Rain Man 05-17-2014 11:22 PM

This is not going to be a sexy draft for me. My offensive line was decimated this year. Three of my five offensive line starters have left in free agency or been released by their team.

Do we lose players when other teams release them or lose them to free agency?

We decided that we wouldn't lost those players just to keep it from being a pain in the neck on tracking. But at the same time, if a player gets released by some other team, they're not going to be really good for our roster if no one else picks them up.

In the long run, that means we probably need to evaluate if the simulation is still fair since, as we diverge more and more from the Chiefs' roster, we're continuing to get free agents and aren't really losing them at the same pace. But we can discuss that after the draft.

Rain Man 05-18-2014 09:12 PM

Okay, I studied this all day and I'm making my picks.

This draft was brutal. Every position of need for me seemed to get drafted before I could get my picks, and then there would be a big dropoff. I hate trading down, but I had no choice this year.

First, we are trading down with the Buffalo Bills. We are trading our #23 pick (760 points, discounted to 494) for their #44 pick (460 points), #153 pick (30.2 points), and #221 pick (3 points).

I did not make the Alex Smith trade, so I keep my #56, and I didn't have Edgar Jones to trade, so I don't move up at the bottom of the round. My picks are:

44
56
87
124
153
163
200
221
238

And without further ado, my draft is ...

#44 - Cyrus Kouandjio, OT (Bills)

With Branden Albert and Geoff Schwartz leaving, and with Eric Winston currently without a team, the only tackle on my roster is Menelik Watson. Kouandjio seems to have a good chance at being a starter if his medical stuff works out.

Other players considered: Xavier Su'a-Filo (G), Dee Ford (DE/OLB), or Teddy Bridgewater (QB) if no trade down. The first two would've filled big needs but I decided I could get a better return on investment with later picks.

#56 - Morgan Moses, OT (Redskins)

Yeah, two tackles with my first two picks. I've had problems replenishing this position over the years, so it's time to stock up.

Others considered: Kony Ealy (DE), C.J. Fiedorowicz (TE), Terrance Brooks (FS). Three more areas of need, but Moses seemed like the best value. I also pondered Gabe Jackson (G) and Louis Nix (NT).

#87 - Donte Moncrief, WR (Colts).

This pick was very difficult. I really wanted to fill one of my major needs areas, but couldn't find a pick that seemed worth the price. WR is a bit of a luxury here, though I could use some depth and competition.

Others considered: Crockett Gilmore (TE) was on my board almost the whole time as a need pick since Tony Gonzalez retired on me, but I eventually decided that I could get by with Fasano and Travis Kelce and see how they do. That let me go with the player that I think has the higher upside.

If we were allowed two trade-downs, I would've traded down out of this pick and taken Carl Bradford (OLB) and some lower picks. But since I couldn't trade down, Moncrief seemed like the better risk.

#124 - David Yankey, G (Vikings).

With Brian Waters' career in doubt and Wade Smith getting cut, my once-deep guard position was suddenly shaky. Yankey seemed like a really good value pick here who can potentially fill a need.

Others considered: None, really. Yankey was way above my other choices. I looked at G Dakota Dozier and OLB Telvin Smith, along with FS Nate Berhe.

#153 - Ed Reynolds, FS (Eagles)

I really need a free safety, and the top ones went before my first-round pick. Ed Reynolds can be competitive for the starting position with Quentin Demps on my roster. Screw Kendrick Lewis. I may cut him even if I don't have any other safeties.

Others considered: I really wanted DE Chris Smith as well, but couldn't find a way to get both. It came down to Smith or Reynolds.

#163 - Ronald Powell, OLB (Saints).

He's a medical risk that I'm hoping pays off, because I'm very shallow at OLB right now.

Others considered: Lots of good choices here. I really struggled between OLB Jordan Tripp versus Powell, so hopefully I made the right decision. I also strongly considered the two QBs (Aaron Murray and A.J. McCarren), along with FS Vinnie Sunseri.

#200 - Daniel McCullers, NT (Steelers).

I invested heavily in the DT position last year with three draft picks, but only one of them had a good year. McCullers seems like a cheap backup with notable upside.

Others considered: OT Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and DT Shamar Stephen. I've already drafted two OTs, though, and liked McCullers on the nose. He's huge. I also pondered FB Jay Prosch, but figured I'd wait on that position.

#221 - Trevor Reilly, OLB (Jets).

I think he slipped a lot due to his age (Mormon mission), but if I can get a good player cheap for a few years, he's definitely worth a late pick.

Others considered: None, really. He was my guy in this slot.

#238 - Trey Millard, FB (49ers).

I need a fullback. He's a fullback. Let's hope he sticks on the Niners' roster.

Others considered: There were a few others that I liked, including OLB Tyler Starr, ILB Yawin Smallwood, and WR Tevin Reese. But they were all depth at this point and I had no fullback on the roster.

In summary, my draft is:

#44 - Cyrus Kouandjio, OT (Bills)
#56 - Morgan Moses, OT (Redskins)
#87 - Donte Moncrief, WR (Colts)
#124 - David Yankey, G (Vikings).
#153 - Ed Reynolds, FS (Eagles)
#163 - Ronald Powell, OLB (Saints).
#200 - Daniel McCullers, NT (Steelers).
#221 - Trevor Reilly, OLB (Jets).
#238 - Trey Millard, FB (49ers).

1) I accepted the Alex Smith trade,

2) I didn't have Edgar Jones on my roster,

3) I'm trading down with the Denver Broncos. I give them my #23 (760 pts), discounted to 494 pts. In return, we get #56 (340 pts), #95 (120 pts), #156 (30 pts), and #242 (1.2 pts) for a total of 491.2 pts.

so my picks are:

#56 - Cody Latimer WR (Indiana) - Denver

I coveted Jordan Matthews with my first pick, but I was able to get more back in a trade with Denver for a similar player who is also headed to a prolific offense.

#87 - Phillip Gaines CB (Rice) - KC

I'm already in good shape at CB, but the draft didn't really fall to my needs well here and Gaines will give me insurance in case KC parts ways with Brandon Flowers in the next year or two.

#95 - Michael Schofield OT (Michigan) - Denver

With the loss of Branden Albert, my offensive line is looking pretty thin. Terron Armstead is penciled in as my starting LT, but my other tackles are still big question marks. Schofield and 6th round pick of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif give me a couple of other prospects to take up the slack or play guard in a pinch.

#124 - Kevin Pierre-Louis OLB (Boston College) - Seattle

With Tamba Hali getting older, it's time to find his replacement. I've got a couple candidates on my roster, but no sure things so I'll add Pierre-Louis to the mix and hope for the best.

#156 - Ed Reynolds S (Stanford) - Philadelphia

Reynolds is a guy I had targeted to bolster my thin safety ranks. The trade down was designed around him and Latimer.

#163 - Aaron Murray QB (Georgia) - KC

I don't know whether he'll replace Chase Daniel or Tyler Bray, but I think he's a good deal this late in the draft and I expect him to have an equal or better career than either of those guys.

#200 - Laurent Duvernay-Tardif OT (McGill) - KC

He's smart, he's strong, and he's big. I hope his name will fit on the jersey.

#238 - Trey Millard FB (Oklahoma) - San Francisco

I too need a FB. Why, oh why didn't I roster Anthony Sherman so I could use this pick on Henry Josey? I don't know, but at least I have one more pick.

#242 - Bruce Gaston NT (Purdue) - Arizona

Damnit! I need a NT worse than I need a RB so no Henry Josey here. NT is probably my thinnest position. One of the guys on my roster plays for Arizona so I'm picking up Gaston with my final pick because he went to Arizona as an UDFA. It's possible that neither of them will win the starting job, but one of them will almost surely make the team.

Rain Man 05-20-2014 10:56 AM

Ah, interesting. Another trade down.

I'm philosophically opposed to trading down, but have now done it two years in a row with my top choice. Last year was a no-brainer with the value of the #1 pick, but this year was just a fluke of player availability for me. I would've probably taken my top pick with the #23 pick, so I might as well trade down and get a couple of late picks as well.

Yeah, same here. I was going to take Jordan Matthews with #23, but then I realized he was far enough down on the draft board that even with the steep discount, I could pick up a late pick to go with him. And with Ed Reynolds going one pick before #163, I started to think about maneuvers that would bring him into reasonable range.

I wonder if we buy the same draft magazine. Ed Reynolds was a factor in my trade down too.

I liked him based on internet research I did for one of the pre-draft mock polls here. I don't remember what sites I was using.

I liked Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, based on the same thing.

Or just lazy. Actually I liked the picks this year. I might have done something different in Round 1 but was on the fence so I took the easier path. After that I felt like the Chiefs really killed it. We'll see. This at least keeps me in the game.

In this game, no one. You're running with a street free agent. You have to either draft a guy or get a guy that the Chiefs sign as a free agent.

Oh, yeah. We need to get our final 53-man rosters put together, don't we?

Rain Man 09-03-2014 03:09 PM

Chiefs free agency losses. If these guys are on your team, they're gone now:

Geoff Schwartz G Signed KC NYG 4 $16,800,000 Mar 11
Dexter McCluster WR Signed KC TEN 3 $9,000,000 Mar 11
Brandon Flowers CB Signed KC SD 1 $3,000,000 Jun 24

Chiefs free agency gains who made the roster. You can add these guys to your team for free.

Rain Man 09-03-2014 04:29 PM

Here's my final roster. My verdict is as follows:

Offense: My skill positions are very strong, but my offensive line and FB is a wreck. I lost three starters and two key backups from last year's line, so I'm scrambling, plus Tony Gonzalez retired.

Defense: I think it's better than last year and I've built up my front seven, but I have some glaring weaknesses at OLB and FS, and a very thin CB crew. I finally gave up on Da'Quan Bowers after holding him for years, but had a lot of talent on the D-line this year.

It's been a very strange year. I ended up with 19 new players on my roster, with lots of free agent departures, some retirements, and several guys changing positions.

QB
Russell Wilson (Seahawks)
Geno Smith (Jets)
Tyler Bray

Good starter, not much depth.

HB
Jamaal Charles
C.J. Spiller. (Bills)
Denard Robinson (Jaguars)

Very strong here. Robinson has moved up to the 2nd string in Jacksonville.

FB/H-Back
2014/#238 - Trey Millard, FB (49ers).

He didn't make a team and got cut twice, but I have no one here. So he gets to start for me. I'm very weak here. I may put Charles and Spiller in the backfield a lot and rely on elusiveness.

WR
Dwayne Bowe
Kendall Wright (Titans)
WR Donnie Avery
Frankie Hammond, WR
2014/#87 - Donte Moncrief, WR (Colts).
Albert Wilson, WR

All of a sudden I have depth galore if the free agents and rookies work out. I even had to make a difficult choice to cut injured WR Leonard Hankerson, who's been a good #3/#4 guy for me in the past.

TE
Anthony Fasano
Travis Kelce (Chiefs)

No depth, but let's see how it works out. It hurt to lose Tony G.

OT
Menelik Watson (Raiders)
2014/#56 - Morgan Moses, OT (Redskins)
Ryan Harris, RT
2014/#44 - Cyrus Kouandjio, OT (Bills)

I lost three OTs this offseason - Albert, Schwartz, and Eric Winston, so I'm desperate here. Watson has won a starting role in Oakland, but I'm going to start rookie Morgan Moses at LT. Kouandjio is apparently busting hard in Buffalo as my top rookie pick this year.

G
Alex Boone (49ers)
Mike McGlynn, G
2014/#124 - David Yankey, G (Vikings).
Jeffrey Linkenbach, G

I lost two strong guards this year when Brian Waters retired (as a Chief since I never let him go) and Wade Smith got cut. So Boone will have to anchor the line with some backups.

C
Rodney Hudson (Chiefs)

Hopefully solid.

K
Cairo Santos, K

Got lucky here because my previous kicker, Alex Henery, got cut this year. It was a surprise because I thought he was pretty entrenched. So I'll be going with Karo Syrup.

P
Dustin Colquitt

Hall of Famer.

FS
Kendrick Lewis
Jordan Poyer (Eagles)
Kelcie McCray, FS
2014/#153 - Ed Reynolds, FS (Eagles)

Dammit! Dammit! I was so wanting to cut Kendrick Lewis. But he won the starting job in Tennessee and my starter last year, Baccari Rambo, got moved to SS. Dammit! I can't even make him a backup! Poyer was moved to FS from CB and will be my dime back.

SS
Reshad Jones (Dolphins)
Baccari Rambo (Redskins)

Strong here and also have depth. If Kendrick Lewis is Kendrick Lewis, Rambo may move back to FS for me.

CB
Alphonso Dennard (Patriots)
CB Sean Smith
Chris Owens, CB

My corners got decimated this year. Flowers left and my veteran depth all got cut and Poyer moved to safety. I'm way too thin here.

OLB
Tamba Hali
AJ Klein (Panthers)
Josh Martin, OLB
Dekoda Watson (Buccaneers)
2014/#221 - Trevor Reilly, OLB (Jets).
2014/#163 - Ronald Powell, OLB (Saints).

Hali and a bunch of backups. I can't seem to solve this problem. I've got some developmental players that I'm stashing in the hope that one of them will develop. Klein was moved outside giving me yet another prospect. Zombo was a tough cut but I figure that I'll go with youth and potential.

ILB
Derrick Johnson
Rey Maualuga (Bengals)
Zach Brown (Titans)
Josh Mauga, ILB

Zach Brown was moved inside and won his starting job back, so I'm good here.

DE
Star Lotulelei (Panthers)
DE Mike DeVito
Ropati Pitoitua
Vance Walker, DE

Jonathan Massaquoi (Falcons)

We're moving Star out to DE, and we now have strong starters. Ropati is starting in Tennessee so we also have some depth.

NT
Brandon Williams (Ravens)
DE Alex Carrington (Bills)
2014/#200 - Daniel McCullers, NT (Steelers).

In good news, Brandon Williams won the starting NT job in Baltimore, which allows me to move Star out to DE. McCullers and Carrington are both backups that give me decent depth, with McCullers as a developmental prospect. Jesse Williams went on IR again, so I reluctantly cut him, and I gave up on Da'Quan Bowers, who was moved to DT this offseason.

Tough Cuts:
Quentin Demps, SS
Daniel Sorensen, S

LB Frank Zombo
Jesse Williams (Seahawks)
Leonard Hankerson (Redskins)
Jaye Howard, DT

Da'Quan Bowers (Buccaneers)
Damion Square, DE

Easy Cuts:
Tyler Wilson (Raiders)
West, Charcandrick RB

Campbell, Jordan FB

Surgent, Darryl WR

Williams, Fred WR

Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) - Retired
Kevin Brock TE
Branden Albert - Free Agent
Eric Winston
Geoff Schwartz - Free Agent
Brian Waters - Retired
Jason Pinkston (Browns)
Wade Smith
Gottschalk, Ben C

Alex Henery (Eagles)
Brandon Flowers - Free Agent
CB Dunta Robinson
D.J. Moore (Bears)
Chris Carter (Steelers)
Schwenke, Kona DT
Fangupo, Hebron DT
Anthony Toribio
Joe McKnight, RB
Henry, Ricky G
Kurt Coleman, FS
Franklin, Jerry LB

Los Angeles Cobras 2014 beginning of the year synopsis:

Ok so because of injuries my QB situation isn't good I'm relying on geno smith

WR I'm a lot better off than chiefs with Crabtree bowe Bailey

RB Charles, Ingram , Gray

TE chiefs tight ends

Online is weak

My D line is stronger

As well as my linebackers

CBS are stronger too

Safeties are stronger

So if geno has a good season so does cobras

So season relies on one Geno Smith

Ah, you are correct. I figure the ship has sailed so I won't claim him, but others can.

chiefscafan 11-09-2014 10:22 AM

Not sure bout him seems to be injury prone now

chiefscafan 11-09-2014 10:30 AM

Man I'm screwed I wanted to draft Wilson but I was too late posting it that year so I had to take chief picks. Geno has been a flop and AJ is on IR I still believe in him and if dalton has more games like Thursday he can take that job next season.

Early returns on my draft this year are disastrous. That's what I get for investing in non-skill positions.

Rain Man 01-05-2015 06:41 PM

Wow, my team had a collapse this year. Everything seemed to go wrong. I got only 12 starts from my rookie class, and I had injuries all over the field. I hope some of these rookies gain traction next year, because I'm learning that one bad draft will really hurt you.

My review of the year:

Backfield - I was good here with Russell Wilson and Jamaal Charles, and a journeyman fullback. However, I lost CJ Spiller for most of the year, but Denard Robinson is coming along and stepped in. This wasn't my problem. Comparison with the real Chiefs: I win.

Receivers - This is another bright spot, with Kendall Wright and Dwayne Bowe starting, and rookie Donte Moncrief coming in as a strong #3. I've also got depth and a developing Albert Wilson. On the tight end side, I lost Tony Gonzalez last year, but replaced him with Fasano and Travis Kelce, so I'm solid if not spectacular. Comparison with the real Chiefs: I win.

Offensive line - Disaster here. I lost multiple starters as well as key depth. I drafted two rookies very high and they both struggled (Morgan Moses and Cyrus Kouandjio). Ryan Harris manned my right side and Menelik Watson covered part of the season on the left. At guard, I had Alex Boone (solid) and Mike McGlynn/Jeff Linkenbach. My rookie draft pick never saw the field. I have Hudson at center. Comparison with the real Chiefs: I think I lose.

Special teams - Santos and Colquitt. You make the call. Comparison with the real Chiefs: tie.

Defensive backs Wow. I thought I was in good shape, but my offseason killed me with various surprise cuts and retirements. Then Alfonzo Dennard got benched and Baccari Rambo got cut. My defensive backfield was decimated. I ended up starting Kendrick Lewis and Reshad Jones at safety, and Sean Smith and Dennard/Chris Owens at corner. This unit completely blew up on me. Comparison with the real Chiefs: I lose badly.

Linebackers. I got a break here as two late-round picks for me have turned into starters on the outside. I've got Hali on one side, and AJ Klein and Trevor Reilly on the other. I lost DJ for the year, but have Rey Maualuga, and I ended up starting Josh Mauga. Zach Brown, who got off to a great career start, appears to be falling by the wayside. Comparison to real Chiefs: I lose badly. I should've drafted Justin Houston.

Defensive line - I invested very heavily in this group last year, and got two starters out of it: Brandon Williams at NT and Star Lotulelei at 3-4 DE. Since Devito went down early, Ropati Pitoitua stepped up and started, and I don't have much else. Comparison to real Chiefs. I think I lose this one, but it may be close to a draw.

This season was horrific for my team. Free agency defections, injuries, and what's looking like a weak draft all combined to really hurt.

My draft needs this year:

High priority

Cornerback - Desperate. I need another starter and a nickel back at a minimum.
Guard - How did I go from five starters to essentially one in a year? I really need a new Day One starter here.
Offensive tackle - I've invested 1 1st round and two 2nd round picks in LTs the past two years, and I think I might have one of them starting at RT in the NFL.
Free safety - I keep investing low-round picks and it's not working.

Moderate priority

Kicker - Santos worries me a bit
Outside linebacker - I've had some luck getting bodies on the field, but need a star.
Inside linebacker - Given my other needs, I'll hope that DJ comes back
Defensive end - If Devito comes back, I'm fine, but I could always use one more guy in the rotation
Tight end - I need depth unless a star becomes magically available

Low priority

Nose tackle - If I get a DE I can move Star Lotulelei back here.
Wide receiver - I'm pretty good here. No superstars, but solid
Fullback - I think I'll just go with an extra TE or WR most of the time.
Quarterback - Maybe a backup
Center - Maybe some depth

No need

Strong safety - I'm good here unless I want some depth.
Halfback - I'm strong and deep
Punter - Colquitt. Enough said.

Last year the draft pool didn't match my needs at all, but this year is looking really promising. My areas of need appear to have a lot of depth for the most part, as long as my #1 guy falls into place.

My team looks like crap. How the hell do I not have Jeff Allen or Ron Parker? O-line manages to be worse than the real Chiefs. Need to put some effort into the draft this year and see if it can be turned around.

Yeah, my team was looking really good two years ago, and last year it all went to Hades. I need a good draft this year to reload.

I'm screwed at QB. Both top guys will be gone by 18 I'm gonna have to get creative or take a chance on someone early.

Rest of my team is good question rain man do I get to keep Crabtree or does he go FA

Somewhere along the line we talked about this, and I make a reference in Post 445. We decided that for now we would NOT lose a free agent unless they were a Chief, but we'll monitor the impact of that. I think in the long run if we're getting free agents coming to the Chiefs and we're not losing free agents, it may give us an unfair advantage over the real NFL. But then again we also have some disadvantages, so it might balance out.

Our rules at the current time are:

1. If a Chief leaves as a free agent and he's on our roster, we lose him.
2. If a Chief gets cut and he's on our roster, we can choose to keep him.
3. If the Chiefs make a trade and everyone they give up (picks and players) is on our roster, we can choose to accept or regret the trade.
4. If a player on our roster leaves his team in any way, it doesn't matter.

Per Rule 2, I think we can choose to keep or release Dwayne Bowe, which seems a little unfair since we'll also get to sign Maclin, but whatever. We'll monitor.

Per Rule 3, I think the only trade on the books right now is the 5th round choice for Grubbs at guard, so we can choose to accept or reject that trade.

Bottom line: according to the current rules, you can keep Crabtree. But we may adjust that in the future by consensus.

Can anyone find a list of free agent gains and losses so far? Gains will include guys signed in mid-season last year. I see the gains as:

WR Jeremy Maclin
G Paul Fanaika
SS Tyvon Branch
WR Jason Avant
LB Jojo Dickson
T Curtis Feigt
CB Jamell Fleming
DB Aaron Hester
LS Jorgen Hus
WR Corbin Louks
DB Deji Olatoye
QB Terrelle Pryor
G Jarron Pughsley
WR Da'rick Rogers
TE Adam Schilz
T Derek Sherrod
WR Fred Williams
LS James Winchester
DT Jerel Worthy
DT Vaughn Martin
CB Shaquille Richardson

You can also elect to trade away your 5th round choice to obtain Ben Grubbs

Losses:

Rodney Hudson, C (signed with Oakland)
Jeffrey Linkenbach, OL (signed with Miami)
Kevin Vickerson, DL (signed with the New York Jets)
Kurt Coleman, S (signed with Carolina)
Thomas Gafford, LS (signed with Chicago)
Joe Mays, LB (signed with New York Jets)

Anyone else?

What do we think about Dwayne Bowe? Technically he was cut, but it was really a contract deal. Do we keep him or should we in good faith lose him?

Also, if any of these guys are on your roster, you should have kicked them off. (I just found this list of last year's free agent losses.)

Dexter McCluster, RB/WR (signed with Tennessee)
Branden Albert, OT (signed with Miami)
Geoff Schwartz, OT (signed with New York Giants)
Jon Asamoah, G (signed with Atlanta)
Tyson Jackson, DE (signed with Atlanta)
Jerrell Powe, DL (signed with Houston)
