Years ago when Bristol still had a guardrail gate on the outside wall, Michael Waltrip hit it so hard that there was literally nothing left of the car. Waltrip walked away. Now look at Dale Earnhardt's crash. When he hit the wall the car stayed intact. Which caused him to have more force exerted on his body. Pre-Hans days. His head so violently smashed forward that he had a cracked skull where is brain was trying to escape his head.

Wild finish, glad nobody got hurt or so it appears to be the case.

The good Lord was watching over the #3 tonight...

It's great that Austin Dillon got out and appeared fine. But he also endured a major, sudden impact. Expect a very thorough evaluation.

Austin Dillon hits the crash fence and goes airborne following the end of the race at Daytona

chefsos 07-06-2015 04:46 AM

In reference to tk's question earlier, I think that fence did exactly what it was designed to do, and recent renovations at Daytona placed the stands (and people) a little farther away from the track. NASCAR earned its reputation as general shitbags, but they got this one right. One fan hospitalized and apparently OK.

Someone with engineering knowledge is gonna need to explain to me the deceleration force involved when a 3400lb car goes from 190mph to 0 that suddenly. I've never seen a car just stop like that. And dude walked away from it.

Wow, it looks like I missed one of the bigger big ones!

Welp, 4:30am was too early to be expected to hang all night.

That was the most awesome wreck I have ever seen...

NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France speaks out on Daytona crash

Quote:

A chain reaction triggered by Kevin Harvick tapping Denny Hamlin, sent the No. 11 Toyota spinning into Dillon and launched the No. 3 Chevrolet from the inside lane over two rows of cars and into the catchfence. After he landed on his lid, Keselowski slid into Dillon and sent him twirling like a top.

"This is auto racing. We’re always going to have challenges and we’re going to have hard crashes like last night that thankfully, everything was ok."

"Obviously, what we do want is the closest, tightest racing that we can but we put safety at the top of the list for obvious reasons. We pursue those things as we go along and have a track record of getting those things right although it’s a moving target and it’s never simple."

– Brian France

"You knew it was going to be crazy. Right from the start I thought it was a wild race. A lot of action and crazy stuff going on...We were pushing like crazy, just wide open.

"It is literally like a video game out there these days, except for it’s real life. It’s crazy. It’s really crazy. I love Daytona. This place has been amazing for me. I can’t believe this is my final race here, but after going through that experience I’m glad I only have one more restrictor plate race left."

– Jeff Gordon

After finishing eighth, Ryan Newman’s told USAToday, "NASCAR got what they wanted. They just don't pay attention to safety. Simple as that."

"That's the end of it,” Newman added. "Cars getting airborne, unsafe drivers, same old stuff. They just don't listen."
