DJs Hairy Nuts'replacement level' team wins 48 games. 88 makes you likely to make the post-season. So that $160 million buys you an additional 40 wins; that's the baseline for 'competitive'. The true worth of a win in a free market becomes something nearer $4 million/yr.

I commented once on a Royals review story. Some guy (Shawn newkirk maybe?) posted an article claiming the Royals team in 2015 was really worth $325M - he took 40 war and multiplied it by the $8M figure. I informed him that's just the FA rate, that a team of FA would cost that but we have a mix. And the avg is $4M industry wide making his valuation twice as high.

He of course argued and said I was flat wrong. But we all know who actually was.

Looking as if the union is going to reject MLB's pace of play adjustments partially out of spite.

Buster Olney says in this podcast near the 11 minute mark that based on conversations he's had, he thinks Hosmer is going to San Diego unless the Royals do something significant to separate themselves from the Padres offer.

I think that's a fairly dumb opinion - since Moustakas has been at worst an average third baseman and at best an above-average one, which adds a large degree of defensive value Bruce just can't.

But shit, if he's in the 3/$40 million range, there's no reason the Royals can't bring him back. I'd be perfectly comfortable with 4-5 years at those terms.

Prison Bitch 01-21-2018 11:33 AM

Yeah, I'm not seeing that comparison at all.

The owners should just hold up pictures of Alex Gordon and Pablo Sandoval and Shin Soo Choo, drop them, and walk away

A bunch of whiney millionaires. I wouldn't sign any of them. How often to big contracts work out?
