Having to clear about a quarter acre more back behind so they can get power to the house, but it's one step closer than it was to being home. Beyond adding an 8x12' dropped deck on the front, I'm still mulling the landscaping plan. I'm planning to toss out some rye in the next month to get some cover for the winter, at least.

Nice. REALLY nice...

Thanks! Nothing quite like designing a house on notebook paper while sitting in a bar. LOL It's not huge, but it's bigger than a tiny house.

There is a 10x10 bathroom and a 10x10 utility room on the other side of the wall behind the stove.

Worked this week and last to extend the 5' porch out another 8'. Finished up the skirting this morning and pleased with the results. Will stain to match the house in the Spring. Next up is a planter across the width for lemongrass, etc.

Two more raised beds and our home garden is done (four 3’x10’x1’ beds). Garlic, tomatoes, basil, peas, green onions, carrots, watermelon, and strawberries, here we come!

Those look AWESOME!!! What's the drainage strategy?

Fire Me Boy! 03-25-2018 09:31 AM

Tilled underneath the paper, which drains pretty well by itself while blocking the grass from growing up. Worked like a champ for us last year on the other two.

That’s newsprint, by the way. Thin stuff.

Just doing a 360 sprinkler this year. The whole big irrigation thing didn’t work out real well last year, so abandoning that.

I used the seed starter insert this year, and holy shit is that thing awesome. These tomatoes, watermelon, and peppers were started in there. They’re weathered now and ready to plant.

My neighbor does the same, but he's doing interesting thing, he researched the heck out of the sun's movement relative to the trees and their shade, and placed his garden in a place where things like tomatoes get full sun, but others will get some shade.

It'll be interesting to see how it works out for him.

That’s a lot of planning. Oy.

I have this to the northeast, so these will slowly get full sun around mid afternoon and evening.

Newsprint. I have big rolls of the stuff, but old newspapers would work. And yes. It’s thin and water soaks through for drainage and is really effective as a weed blocker.

I did it on my other two raised beds last year and it worked really well.

I learned it from mom, but here’s a good read: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/20...ith-newspaper/

cabletech94 03-25-2018 03:38 PM

^^ very nice. i started using cardboard a few years back. does a pretty good job. i was working the old beds yesterday. billions upon billions of rollie pollies everywhere. i hate to kill them. but man, its MY garden.

We’re supposed to close on a new house on Monday. Two sides of the property do not have a fence. One is 95’ and the other is 16’ and gets a gate. One company quoted $4300. I priced everything at Lowes for $1400.

Guess I’m building a fence.

Make sure you buy a string line and a good long level.

EDIT: if you have to buy post hole digger do yourself a favor and buy a file to sharpen it. And then sharpen it for the love of god.

But if he is doing this to save money he’s not going to want to fork over cash for that. Digging postholes with a post hole digger isn’t bad. As long as you don’t have to do a half mile of them at a time.

I get it, but it's a rental...

And good point, always wait a day or two after a soaking rain (or watering lots).

The neighbor got the 1-man deal and it dug like there was no tomorrow.

I’m thinking about renting an Auger. I have 14-15 (110 ft) holes to dig. Probably doing most of the work myself.

It’s supposed to be a bit for the next few days so I’m hoping it’ll soften the ground up.

Post hole digger is $50. I’m assuming it’s going to take a full day and overnight to dig, add 4x4’s, concrete and let them get set.

If I have 8’ posts do I dig 2 ft down and concrete them in? Or dig the 2’ throw in concrete, then the post and finish with more concrete? As to not have wood direct contact to the soil.

For 14-15 I wouldn’t rent an auger. Just call that your workout for the day.

I’m not sure it matters much. Just be sure you get treated posts and you’ll be fine.

I did a garden for years. Too much work, and there are others that do it better.

I hit the local farmer's markets for fresh produce from May through October. Way better and cheaper than the expense of doing it myself.

I do have some pictures from early last week. I have one cherry tomato plant that produces literally thousands of cherry tomatoes in a year here. It's ****ing massive. 6 feet tall and close to that wide. It just produces and produces and never stops until about late June. Plan is to keep it alive through the summer and it will continue producing again come September and all through fall and early winter. Others have told me you can keep a single cherry tomato plant alive for years here and it will continue producing.

And the early girl tomato produces very well too. Lots of great shaped tomatoes with great color to them.

That's a 3 year old grapevine that I grew along the pool fence. First year it's been loaded with grapes.

Wow, very impressive, well done!

Garden is doing great , pulled the first tomato last night. I started the plants from seeds on Dec 27th and they were getting huge inside the house so I put most of them out out the middle of March.

We had multiple late freezes and lost quite a few plants. Only have six left but they are doing great.

Planted bell pepper plants from seeds as well and have about a dozen doing great.

Been eating radishes, lettuce and cilantro out of the garden.

We have been up to our eyeballs in lettuce & spinach. Lot's of salad being eaten in our house. Our carrots are really thriving right now as well. This year we expanded our 3x6 raised beds to 6x12 and our my own mixture of screened topsoil, homemade compost and ash, peat moss, and bagged garden soil as opposed to just bagged garden soil. It seems like this holds the moisture much better than the bagged soil...

Nice that you can start plants in house. Our cat eats everything so it's not an option here. What varieties of tomatoes do you grow? I wanna branch out but early girls and cherry tomatoes are so easy.

I tried bell pepper one year and got nothing. Maybe I should try again.

We grow lettuce, radishes and cilantro in the winter here. The lettuce was a first for me and absolutely delicious and grew like a ****ing weed!

:D This is my third year of plants out of the same bag of "beefsteak" tomato seeds. Us old retired people must stretch that dollar!

It seems like every variety of pepper i have grown likes this soil. Chilis, Jalepenos and a couple varieties of bells.

All four figs made it and are now going to town. I was pretty lazy getting them prepped for winter and thought I might have lost all or some of them.

Glad your lettuce is good, I have had a poor year for it compared to others.

For those that don't know ,sprinkle some epson salt around your tomato plants and watch what happens.

I’ve been eating wilted lettuce for a month now.

I’ve had insect issues since I moved to the woods last year and mentioned it to a buddy over beers one day. He showed up with a bottle of Talstar P last weekend and I finally got around to treating the exterior of the house Tuesday. For the first time, I’ve not found a spider in the house, which has been a daily struggle. Highly recommended if you have insect issues. Supposed to control 75 bug varieties and is pet and people safe.

I didn’t see bees on the label. I just sprayed the seating areas in the yard, so I hope it is.

Bifenthrin is very toxic to bees and wasps. Make sure when spraying to keep it away from any plants that are being pollinated by bees and be aware of drift.

Bump this shit!

Added a loquat tree in a grow bag and a banana tree in the ground in my small side yard. Blueberry bush is thriving. Lime, lemon and orange tree always fine. Grape tree adding grape buds currently. Added a barbados cherry tree which loves heat this year near pool. Rose season is over but I had some nice ones.

How do you keep the roses alive through the summer?

Iowanian 04-23-2019 09:32 PM

Time is my issue here.

I till gardens as one of my side hustles. I've fought tractor problems for a couple,of years and it's getting old. The past two weeks I have gone to do 6 jobs(3 tonight) where someone who has called me recently, had someone else show up and till for Them. It's their choice but if you call me Saturday and I road a tractor 5 miles to till for you and only find out when I get there that it's done.....it's infuriating. If you have someone else do your work....give me a ducking courtsy call. Pretty basic mad code.

Also....my circle are having an "outlaw giant pumpkin" contest. No rules, just make the biggest pumpkin. I'm open to super duper cheat codes. Help me beat my brothers and asshole friends.
