Can never have too many pass rushers /CP before the draft
Defense collapsed last year when the our pass rush failed /CP before draft
Hali ran out of gas and it cost us /CP before the draft
Sutton didn't rotate the DLine enough last year /CP before the draft

No, we are talking about trading back 7 picks which would be 30 and getting a 2nd which is unrealistic.

Nobody is paying Tamba's contract especially since he's 31 this year. We wouldn't get much for him. It's far more beneficial to just keep him.

I like this pick, which is a little scary.

People are melting down because we didn't trade up in front of Cleveland, who just traded up in front of us, to draft Manziel.

People are melting down because we didn't take Freddy Bilgewater.

I mean, shit, we just got what amounted to the best remaining pass rusher in this draft, a guy with measurables comparable to or better than Justin Houston, and they are freaking melting down about not getting a substandard quarterback just because they are a quarterback.

Shit, Smith just turned 30 yesterday. Daniel is 27. Bray is 22. And we're freaking out about not drafting a "young" QB with our first round pick?

He started his college career at ILB. They moved him to OLB after they lost their top 2 passrushers. He'd be a damn good fit next to DJ.

At this point, I'm hoping for a possible Trevor Reilly selection in the third or fourth or even fifth round if he slides. He's very much in the same mold as Kyle Van Noy - versatile, instinctive and can play any of the LB positions.

Originally recruited as a safety, but has played defensive tackle, defensive end, weak and strong side outside linebacker, inside linebacker and safety. Basically wherever the team needed production.

Pass rusher was one of the team needs. Filled with the selection of Ford.

ILB, WR, OG, OT remain as critical holes.

BryanBusby 05-08-2014 10:55 PM

I'm gonna take the time now to mention that Shayne Skov is gonna own and the Chiefs should draft him if he makes it to the late 3rd round.

Kaepernick 05-08-2014 11:02 PM

I am used to the 49ers GM reaching for a great player. We did it again this year, taking a great 2nd round safety in the 1st round. It is just how the 49ers GM works. He goes for the sure thing.

It looks like Dorsey might be in the same mold. He wants a great guy and gets him and doesn't care who says he is reaching. Time will tell how good a pick you got.

Like you guys, I find it anticlimactic and difficult to pass on 1st round talent to reach for a 2nd round guy I feel we could have got in the 2nd round, but you can't argue with the 49ers roster, so it appears to work for the long term.

I'm sure Ford will be a stud of a pass rusher. But draft day sure is painful, isn't it?

ToxSocks 05-08-2014 11:03 PM

Dorseys reaches are pretty on par with 49ers reaches. Couldn't you tell from all the rookie production last year?

Kaepernick 05-08-2014 11:07 PM

I feel like I'm in the same boat with you guys. Well, except for being a fan of a perennial super bowl contender.

But we need a WR and CB, and we take a Safety in the first. It is a shrewd long term move that will pay big for years down the road rather than the quick easy fix for now.

Ford is that kind of move. It is not your biggest need but it was a shrewd pick that likely will pay dividends for years and years down the road. Solid building block toward a contender.

Just not sexy and not one you want to watch your team pick in the 1st round of the draft.

Half of our draft was injured last year.

Two of them never even saw the field.

Two of them (Fish and Davis) finished the year with numerous injuries and might not be ready for the start of this year...

So in a third and long situation do we put Hali's hand in the dirt and stack Ford behind him? That would be some sick pass rush with Houston coming from the other side and Poe eating up the middle.

I wanted a defensive playmaker, and we drafted one.

The more also makes sense in terms of the salary cap and current contracts.
