Agreed. In years past I would have turned it after we went down by 4. This years team can either win or lose it at any point. The suspense is the stuff of legend.

Haha...Billy talking to everyone.

Billy: "You see my grand slam?"

Ump: "Ya"

Billy: "It was pretty cool."

Nightfyre 04-07-2013 01:15 PM

That was a huge inning, not just in terms of runs but also in terms of accumulating pitches on Hamels. Very important when you are talking about teams with weaker bullpens.

Weak bullpen?

What ? No defense for Yost's stupidity yesterday other than he thinks Holland as the ego to endure and learn at the expense of a team loss ?? Listen my friend, Yost IMO, did more damage hurting Holland's ego than helping him yesterday by not removing him after the 2nd walk only to walk a 3rd. Only for the potential for this to transfer and remind this already vulnerable weak ego team that they will find a way to piss on their shoes somehow. Well see if Yost makes better decisions today IF the situation presents itself again, with the lead going into late innings as this game today looks like it could head that direction.

Hopefully Holland will throw well.

No - I was referring to the Phillies. Hence, why I said HAMELS.

Yankees have no chance this year between the Rays and Sox.

Oh I see why, now re-reading it. Yea, I meant the Phillies and other teams in general who do not have ridiculously stacked pens. The Royals may have the best pen in MLB.

What you hope happens with these young pitchers as they watch Shields is that they learn and take on a Shields mental nastiness as well as the season goes on.

RedDread 04-07-2013 01:27 PM

If Getzy gets a hit here do you PH for Shields?

Here's the thing you're not thinking about: Who was available yesterday to replace Holland?

Herrera was not. Crow was not. Collins pitched two innings the day before and was not available. At that point, you're looking at one of three guys, all of whom had pitched the day before:

Luke Hochevar (yeah, let's bring him in with the bases juiced and nobody out)

JC Gutierrez (nope)

Bruce Chen (again, bases juiced, nobody out, not the situation to use him)

You saying he hurt Holland's ego is complete bullshit. Anybody who pitched at a high/competitive level will tell you the pitcher WANTS the trust from his skipper in that spot.

I certainly did (pitched at the high school/legion level). Every guy I ever covered in a high school, college or major level level certainly did.

If Kelvin Herrera had been rested and sitting in the bullpen, sure, you have an option to replaced Holland. As it was, he was KC's best chance of getting out of that inning, even with the struggles he'd already displayed.

MeatRock 04-07-2013 01:28 PM

Not really. Duncan is thinking like any baseball manager should by analyzing player's talent levels. What he should be doing, as well as Yost, is psychoanalyzing every player for every situation to determine who has the mental capacity for each situation.

Think about it.
