Room temp and neat. The way it is meant to be consumed. Get some NEAT glasses.

Not a bourbon, but he did bring me a boubon from Triple 8 which I'm currently drinking.
Buddy who works for the distillery brought this over last night. Sadly, I was half lit when we sampled it, so I don't have much to report on it. http://i.imgur.com/7kL8dhzh.jpg And just in case: http://www.ack.net/Notchhonored071615.html Quote:

Does anyone have any insight on why it's become so hard to find a bottle of Blanton's lately?
Found three bottles today and grabbed them as if they were the last three I'd ever see. Guessing it's a distillery issue - haven't seen as much EH Taylor as I'm used to seeing on shelves either. |

In STL, Lukas hasn't had any in months, and the other local "superstore" (Randalls) has been in short supply - just bought the last three bottles they expect to get anytime soon. |

Same here for the Blanton's. I can grab it off the shelf about 90% of the time I'm in any of my favorite shops.
|
Sipping tonight on a Smooth Ambler single barrel cask strength 8 year rye. So much flavor with very little burn. A tall pour of High West 16 will probably be next. Nothing beats a good pour on a chilly night.

I owe you both a mea culpa. You were right and I was wrong - Makers is better. It's so clean. Wonderful. It's my new favorite. |
Picked up one of these today for $28. I am trying to expand my tastes into more "expensive" bourbons.
Am I supposed to be able to look something up about the warehouse number and barrel number written on the front? http://i.imgur.com/GSUzEsv.jpg?1 |
Quote:
No, you cannot look that up, it just tells you the skinny on it if you wanted to try and match it again. I have had many of these and unless it is one of the "special batches" (bottled for specific stores), they are usually pretty on par with each other. I visited that distillery a few years back and it was hands down my favorite distillery visit as well. Very "old school" in how they did things. Plus, $28 is a STEAL for that! Cheapest I can get it here in Vegas is about $40.00 |
Quote:
Fry's grocery does a sale a few times a year where you buy 6 bottles and get 30% off. I picked up this among 5 other bottles today. Normally $40 there but 30% off comes to $28. They have some higher end stuff I can get there too including macallan 12 and Balvenie DoubleWood 12. |
I wanna try that
|
I tried the regular 4 Roses, which is a blend not a single barrel, and frankly I thought it was swill. Definitely not something to drink straight. How was your bottle?
|
Quote:
I set that 4 Roses bottle out on the edge of the dumpster and work I figured the bum who comes thru on his dumpster run would get a prize. When I got in from the field it was gone and I wonder if it was an employee or a bum:D |
To each his own. I find the 4Roses single barrel to be quite good.
When I was in Co Springs last month I picked up a few bottles that aren't available in the Wichita market. One was Noah's Mill which was very very good and the younger sibling Rowan's Creek which was pretty good too. Also picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig barrel proof (138.8). Pouring it neat will put some hair on your balls and fire in your belly. I prefer a little ice |

- Four Roses - Yellow Label (swill) - Four Roses Small Batch - REALLY Solid Low Cost ($25-$30) - Four Roses Single Barrel - Amazingly Good Mid Price ($40) There are some Single Barrel special editions (Total Wine in my area has 2 different ones) that go for even more, but personally I prefer the primary Single Barrel. Its amazing at how much a difference there is considering how blah the Yellow Label is. |

Were you the one who talked about using lemon in whiskey? I started doing this since I love whiskey sours. The authentic whiskey sours, not the ones made with sweet and sour mix. I figured it was a waste to make even an authentic whiskey sour with mid-grade whiskey so if I had a nicer bottle, outside of my EW or Jim Bean, I'd try the juice of half a lemon in a glass neat with whiskey. I really seem to like it like this! I don't drink all my whiskey/bourbon like this when I have it neat, but sometimes it's a great change of pace, even if it's frowned upon by bourbon fanatics. |
Quote:
I prefer most of my drams neat. I keep a fairly well stocked cabinet for when I want variety. My personal favorites are the Laphroaig Scotches, with a big preference towards the 10 yr Cask Strength and the Triple Wood. Seriously, two of the finest Whiskeys ever bottled. |
Quote:
I'm definitely a bourbon guy, but I tip my hat to Scotch, but I don't know much about it. Same with Irish whiskeys. I would try any single barrel, to be sure. Even 4 Roses, just to try it. But my experience with the first bottle I tried was so off putting I wouldn't even have considered it until this post. I'll give it a whirl. |
FTR, I think this is the one I had:
http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/071...g?v=1418266520 This is the small batch, but still blended. Just not my cup o tea... |

Maybe it's a Montana thing!? |
Four Roses is my favorite every day drinker. But so far my favorite overall is Balvenie 14. My gf does marketing and events planning for William & Grant, so I've become pretty spoiled with her unlimited supply of all the Balvenie's and Glenfiddich's of the world. Wellers 12 is money too.

Tin Cup is good bourbon too. Very easy to drink, very smooth.

I may suggest Pikesville Ry if you can find it
|
Also, homemade sweet tea as a mixer.... Do it.

Your mom is coming over and fixing me a bourbon on the rocks w/ a grilled cheese.

Not a J&B straight and a Corona, SR?
|
Buffalo Trace is my go-to for whiskey cocktails. It makes a fantasic Old Fashioned, Julep and Manhattan.
|
I had my first Jim Beam last month, yeah I'm new to this whole thing. It was so putrid I couldn't do one small glass on rocks. Rancid

Jim Beam is pretty bad. I normally go with Evan Williams White Label for a bottom shelf bourbon. The kick up to 50% ABV does wonders.

If I am going to go cheap then I am going full hobo. |
Beam is only 25 dollars a handle. It's a great party bourbon. I use buffalo trace for my daily sipper and mixed drink purposes.
|
Picked up a 100% copper mule mug on prime day. No lining like most. Time to make a Montana/Kentucky Mule!
|
Quote:
I never drink Jim Beam straight. I actually like the Evan Williams green label as my favorite cheap whiskey, but I can't find it in Phoenix like I could up north. |
I almost had a whiskey drink or two, but it's a school night so I'm gonna be lame.

I planted a Meyer Lemon tree and can't wait to see a decent yield in the next few years. They are supposed to pair great with whiskey as they are a bit sweeter than regular lemons. |
When I go cheap it's usually old grand dad or regular Weller's reserve. The OGD 114 isn't too bad if you don't mind the higher rye mashbill bourbons

The ginger beer I've found that I like the best overall is Stoli brand. It has the right combo of bite and sweetness and is at a pretty nice price point. Fentiman's is good too, but it's really a pain in the ass to track down it seems. I've probably went through a dozen different ginger beers with Moscow and Kentucky Mules and I've settled on Stoli because it's readily available and I like the taste the best. |
Don't know if y'all are Irish Whiskey drinkers or not, but Tullamore Dew's 15 year Trilogy is damn good. Highly recommend picking it up if you see one. Very smooth, very tasty.
