They should wear red socks. Mandatory. I like the all whites and the all blues. Not much else looks good there.

They got shafted by the move to the SEC.

I was talking with a Mizzou grad and huge fan a few days ago. He watches the games but just doesn't flat out care about driving over to Columbia anymore. Said he really doesn't blame KU for ignoring them because we really don't need them.

Here’s where the Chiefs ranked in points scored since Trent Green left town. (Note: Weis was the OC in 2010.)
2007: 31st
2008: 26th
2009: 23rd
2010: 14th
2011: 31st
2012: 32nd
Here’s Matt Cassel’s QB Rating each year he was with the Chiefs:
2009: 69.9
2010: 93.0
2011: 76.6
2012: 66.7
Man, Weis was a failure there.
...

And it’s obvious once Florida got an able-bodied OC it made a world of difference. The Gators averaged 25.5 points per game in 2011 with Weis as OC. They averaged 26.5 points per game the next season when they won 11 games.
That last part really puts things in perspective. I remember hearing about how he didn't do well with Florida's offense. But looking at that stat, I'd say that is nothing.

What do you all think of Weis so far...what grade would you give him?

Any expectations for this week's game?

I think he's on the right track. As someone that's watched a lot of KU football over the years, you can see the improvement in the players. It didn't translate to wins last year, but you could tell they were improved.

This year, they SEEM to of improved on last year. The key for me is that improvement leading to additional wins & being competitive in those games we don't win.

Basically, I think he's got the team headed in the right direction. If this years team wins 4-5 games, I'll consider it a good season.

Saturday is going to tell me a lot about where this team is and what their chances are going forward in 2013

They did make a dumb move to the SEC but I'd hardly say we don't need them. I'd agree with Saul that playing them is better than anyone besides K-State and maybe on par. These dumb non con games against South Dakota Wesleyan Tech State are pointless. Nobody cares. Teams should play only big schools. You don't see 6A high schools in kansas scheduling rural teams to "start off with".

That said I would still refuse to play them out of principal for screwing over the regional schools/conf. I agree there.

I'm pretty happy overall. He's a **** of an improvement over Radio, but I'm not sure Radio even knew what a football looked like.

He's not without his warts. He went away from the run game too goddamn much last year and let Dayne Crist kill drives. He had a couple boneheaded decisions last game, and that's a concern. But quite honestly, we're probably not going to get anything better at KU without taking a huge risk on some young guy, and overall, I'm not sure the program needed risk.

The Dayne Crist thing is worrisome, but he had to go with somebody, and all reports out of KU said he ripped it up in practice but shit his pants during the games. Not sure if he's damaged goods or if that is a Weis problem. Too early to tell on the QB situation IMO.

But really with what we came from and what KU can pull, I'm happy so far as long as we keep progressing.

Garden City (6A) played Scott City (3A) in the first game of the year in '10 and '11. Garden got beat in Garden and stomped in Scott, so that relationship ended. It's not common but it did happen at least here locally, and ended rather hilariously.

I can confirm that. Heard from a buddy of mine that played receiver at KU that Crist was tearing it up in practice, but lost his confidence in game. Spoke with someone in the AD, and we talked about what happened to Crist's confidence when he was still at ND. He'd seen it before with a basketball transfer (not at KU). Kid could hit from all over the court, but when he transferred, he lost it.

Heaps is going to be fine, already had a hella game. Hope the receivers get their shit together though. One thing - I'd really like to see KU pound it on the ground for awhile before airing it out. Chucking bombs early isn't always the best strategy.

If I have a reasonable gripe with Weis it is that he goes away from the run.

Yes, but Weis showed when he was with the Chiefs that he likes using the pass to set up the run. He'll throw early and often. That's just a trait of his.

Bambi 09-12-2013 12:14 PM

I don't get too bent out of shape at all over Crist. He got signed by the Ravens and then released but then SIGNED AGAIN... I think he may be on the practice squad now.

But the point is that it's not like Weis was carrying the flag for some bum without talent. Crist has the arm and footwork, etc he just could never pull it together at KU. The fact that his WRs were dreadful didn't help either.

What I like it that Weis went against anything he's ever done in his career and engineered Michael Cummings to a very potent running attack. Cummings couldn't throw much at all and defenses knew that...but KU could run the ball anyway. Sims lead the conference in rushing.

I've got a good feeling about Saturday but it's not going to be easy. That's for sure.

I would not be surprised if Kansas doesn't throw more than a dozen times on Saturday.

Grind it out, kill the clock, keep Rice's QB off the field.
