One of my partners just got back. he was on Fairfield Street (a block or so away from the explosions). Not good. Said if it had happened an hour earlier the casualties would have been astronomically higher. |

Yes, BPL is in Copley Square. JFK Library is in Dorchester. Copley Square is correct (Fairmont Copley Plaza is the name of the hotel there and I might've had that in mind). |

Interestingly, looking at last year's results, the average finish time was 4:18 and the average for males was 4:10. It makes me think that whoever planned this looked at those times and thought that they could do the most damage in the middle of the bell curve of runners. |

Just imagine how much it would suck to be running in a marathon because that's what you love to do....and then you lose a leg.
And IMO....it's probably going to be some crazy ass nutjob who's pro gun. |

Yes, that's right. Basically after that it's friends/family waiting for loved ones and whatever, but the big crowd is for the winners to cross. |

Solely according to posts in this thread, there was a preliminary report of another bomb/device at the JFK library, but that appears to have been a simple electrical fire or something (i.e. an unrelated incident). |

But seriously my guess would be that it went off prematurely which would explain why some devices didn't go off. |

Admitted it in the ambulance or whatever? Might be that he's just ****all crazy. I'd much rather have this be some whacko like Loughner than be an Al Quada or NK operation or somesuch. |
Tragedies like this shouldn't get all this immediate coverage other than what is exactly known. So much BS is spread before any facts are known that people remember true or not. Then there are all the pictures, I wouldn't want my family member missing limbs spread all over Twitter or everywhere else. I understand peoples fascination and eagerness to break some news, but too often this world of 24/7 instant news is disturbing.

Jason Sickles, Yahoo News: The New York Post reporting: A federal law-enforcement source confirmed to The Post there are at least 12 dead and nearly 50 injured. Fox News reported that Massachusetts General Hospital was treating 10 people with amputated limbs and all operating rooms were on hold. Authorities have a identified a suspect, who is currently being guarded in a Boston hospital with shrapnel wounds.

Might be. He used interstate commerce to get the materials to build the bomb would seemingly be an easy one. There might even be a generic "terrorism" law on the books now for the feds to use. Dunno. But his target wasn't a federal building (like Timothy Veigh), so they don't have that obvious hook. |

Oh, that's a good theory. |
That's terrible. Pray for everyone.
Also let's ban bombs...oh wait they are banned. Yet they are still used to do evil. Obama logic says this won't/can't happen. Wrong as usual. My point is assault rifle restrictions/bans were counterproductive. |
Local news is reporting that the suspect may have had several backpacks and have been involved.
Makes sense. Since 9/11 the Boston Marathon takes pretty serious precautions. I remember reading an article about that maybe 5-8 years ago. Remove trash cans from the area, etc. etc. Copley Plaza isn't exactly Times Square, but it's a major hot spot -- wouldn't surprise me if there was major camera/video coverage all the time, much less leading up to the marathon. Makes sense that the guy planted the devices only shortly before they went off. |
