I'm seeing YOB live in a little over a week. Unfortunately Enslaved is going to be off the tour by that time, but the good news is YOB will headline.

I'm really excited.

NewChief 03-20-2015 09:08 AM

Nice! Jealous.

Pallbearer is playing a tiny club here tonight, but I don't think I'm going to be able to make it. Sucks, because some former students are opening for them (Auric).

You won't be disappointed. I'm not an Enslaved fan at all. Didn't make it through their set.

Easter Sunday I have Electric Wizard, the Sunday after that is Big Business then in June there's Om and the Black Lips. Plenty of shows!

That first song was much more groovy and melodic than I usually expect from you KCU... no demon growl vocals and crazy fast tempo's... just solid rock and roll or whatever label people want to give it.

That was cool, thanks.

Haha, fast punk and metal will always be my thing, but that was a great album when it came out in '99. Plus, I'm a big fan of album in their entirety shows.

Glad you liked it.

"I'm gonna eat me a mountain, a mountain of pills..."

Throughout the 90's, Monster Magnet was hands down my favourite band. I saw them on the this Superjudge tour and managed to get back stag and hang with the band. One of the greatest experiences of my life. Dave Wyndorf handing me beers, we shot the shit... it was amazing. Then, when I cracked out a couple doobs, I thought they were going to molest me. I was their best friend from from that point on.

Cut to about 4 years later, I went to a cd release party for the Dopes to Infinity record and unexpectedly, Dave Wyndorf showed up! This small metal bar in downtown T.O. (The Bovine Sex Club) and in walks the lead singer with a couple music industry suits. The place erupted! After sitting back for a bit, having a beer or two, I see Wyndorf looking my way (this is no lie!), and he has a few groupies draped over him and he cuts through them and comes over to me and says "you cut your god-damn hair, didn't you?" I just about shit myself. As wasted as he appeared a few years earlier back stage, he remembered our time together and it made my day.

The Doom atmosphere was in full effect in Chicago last night. Cold (for June) and rainy, just a miserable, sweatshirt kind of day altogether. They played outdoors as part of an annual neighborhood festival, so it was perfect. People came from all of the city to see their set, but this particular neighborhood consists of early gentrification hipsters and Puerto Ricans, so the mix of people was kind of hilarious. I think an outdoor show favors Bongripper and their 20 minute songs. I can get kind of bored at Doom shows, but their style along with being outdoors and the people watching was pretty great.

As far as Bongripper, I love them as a band. They're like a punk band trolling as a Doom band. They don't really fit in and operate within the metal scene, something I can relate to all of my life. They could hand pick they're label but chose to do everything themselves. I really, really respect that. That Satan Worshipping Doom record is self released and is listed for $80 by someone on Discogs. They're beyond cult status in Chicago. Their 10th anniversary show in Aug sold out quick and now a $10 ticket is selling for $70 on Stubhub. Even they would admit that's laughable.

I saw Windhand in KC in 2014 I think. The show wasn't as great as I was expecting, but it was a midnight start time and everyone seemed pretty wasted. They're playing a smallish bar down the street from me so I'm going to give it another go as I love their studio stuff. I saw the Uncle Acid flyer a week or so ago here in Chicago, but ticket prices are a little steep for me. I'm kind of a cheap ass when it comes to door prices.

"Punk band trolling as a doom band". Love it!

There are a bunch of vids from this show online. Looked amazing! Since they're not signed, I can't imagine I'll see them around my hood (across the border) anytime soon. Hopefully they'll come as close as Buffalo or even Detroit. Theyre really high on the list for bands I need to see.
As for Windhand, they were here in T.O. last year but I missed it. My friend went but was disappointed. He said they weren't on the same page and had to stop twice in the middle of songs. Great studio band but maybe just not made for live performances.

I think they play some Euro fests so you never know. Looks like SoCal and Arizona this summer. I've heard they all have regular jobs so I think they hit the road in small batches. As fans, probably the biggest threat to unsigned bands, that have been playing for a decade, is how long will they keep doing it before getting on with their lives.

The Poz 07-20-2015 01:23 PM

Acid King's first U.S. tour since 2006.
Of course, they're not crossing the border. But, I see they're playing in KC on Halloween night! My thinking was, hey, let's see if the Chiefs are playing at home that weekend. I was just about to look up flights when I saw that we're home to the Lions the very next day!!! Then, the letdown. That game is in London England. Bastards.

I went to this last summer and it was pretty lame from a turnout standpoint, but it was at Aftershock. It will probably do better in Independence. As far as the lineup, Keef Mountain are my boys, 2 piece, real deal stoner/doom. The new Bummer record is fun and they're cool dudes.

That's cool that you guys are on this. If I was still in KC, I'd go for sure. Bummer should bring some party people. I've never been to The Scene either, so who knows. KC is weird about venue perceptions. Some people are just too cool for anything outside of Midtown.

Ha! For that, I'll put in a good word. Should be a good one.
Last week I snagged tickets to both Sleep and Black Sabbath. Unfortunately I have to wait until the New year for both shows.

I saw Windhand in KC a year or so ago and wasn't really blown away. It was a late show though that started after midnight and I was admittedly half in the bag by the time they started.

I've got King Diamond tix in November, that's a list check off for me.

It really is. I've held off buying it because I've had these tix since before it dropped and want to buy it from them while they're out on the road.

Anyway, less talky from me and MOAR DOOM. New Disrotted track, Chicago.

I think I'll play this on repeat at the front door on Halloween night.

Their singer also plays in a band called Winters In Osaka which is a more ambient noise project but would also be a great choice for a Halloween night soundtrack.

*yes its playing

Sleep tix have been purchased for the 1st of 2 consecutive Chicago shows in Jan. I'm too cheap to go to both so it was a toss up between Bongripper or The Sword as openers.

Now jamming: the new Acid Witch record. It's not a doom album, but rather a hilarious cover of 4 horror movie soundtrack songs from the 80's. The best being Partytime from 45 Grave.

High On Fire

Crowbar, Hooded Eagle

Sun, December 13, 2015

Doors: 6:30 pm / Show: 7:30 pm

Music Farm Charleston •

Charleston, SC

I may be the oldest dude at this show- but don't care. Not familiar with Crowbar or Hooded Eagle- but so jacked for this. Music Farm is a great venue.

KCUnited 12-03-2015 10:57 AM

Singer for Crowbar is 50 and they'll likely bring an over 40 crowd. I wore out their '93 s/t back in the day.

The Poz 12-03-2015 06:52 PM

Awesome! High On Fire are so rad live. I checked out Crowbar, pretty good! Enjoy the show.

NewChief 12-10-2015 10:31 AM

Metal is one of those genres that I sort of follow, but I depend on a lot of year end lists to go through and pick out the bands/albums that sound great to me.

So, this album by Elder called Lore is a lot of what I like in metal. Genre-blurring. Draws on a lot of prog and psychedelic with some ambient down tempo mixed in with the groovier riffs.

Here's the album opener:

Agreed, definitely a top show experience for me.

Bongripper's over-the-top instrumental power jam was the perfect setup and SLEEP absolutely killed it. They sounded incredible. Wish I had tickets to tonight's show.

Bongripper and Sleep. I think that would be my dream show right now.

On a slightly more mellow note, I've been listening to All Them Witches a ton lately. Very, very good!

I'm loving Disrotted! So Doomy!
And, I'm jealous of your ability to see Bongripper. It seems these guys are only in the Chi area for the most part. Have to get down there for a show if they won't find their way near my neck of the woods.

I'm not sure how active Bongripper is these days. I know this particular fest is put on by a guy connected to a metal leaning brewery/bar here in Chicago and I think they have ties. I know they've played it in the past. I think they do little pop up shows around here to satisfy their cult like fans.

I'm going to try and see Disrotted play this Sunday, but I'm not sure how they'll translate live. Plus the show is at some guys house which I'm a little leery of since I mostly go to shows by myself. But yeah, I can't help but crack up a little bit every time I play them because its so ridiculously heavy.

The Poz 08-11-2016 09:05 AM

God damn! The ultimate festival!

http://psycholv.com/

Alice Cooper, Electric Wizard, Sleep, High on Fire, Acid King, Blue Oyster Cult, Baroness, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, Down, Converge, Fu Manchu, Yob, Bongripper... It's endless!!!
