I agree that there's a lot of ridiculous stuff on social media...but then sometimes you have a jogger murdered in Iowa, too.

I've read a few articles by female runners who basically say that they want nothing to do with male runners because men are threatening to them when they approach. It annoys me because they tend to villainize men in general and presume that we're all murderers or rapists. But stuff like the woman in Iowa points out that it only takes one murderer or rapist to make women wary of all of us. I'm not sure what can be done about that.

Tell that to the family of the dead girl in Iowa.

Human trafficking? What a crock! I don't see any evidence of human trafficking here in my basement in Olathe.

Maybe I'm old school. but when I first heard the conditions around the situation the honest initial first thought was why is a young woman like that out unescorted?

You shouldn't have to be told or reminded to know where your ****ing kids are FFS. When I go to the store with my kids.....they're with me every where I go. They aren't running around the store acting like little assholes.

Eleazar 08-27-2018 05:26 PM

I just saw one the other day for the first time. Mom at a park with a young kid. "Something didn't feel right". Then a car drives into the parking lot and parks, nobody gets out. She grabs the kid and runs to her car, peels out of the lot with the kid on her lap, then pounds out a breathless FB post about how they were both almost kidnapped. Of course with all the requisite "OMG SCARY" comments

It's almost like our populace has devolved to ignorant tribal woo-woo.

dlphg9 08-27-2018 05:50 PM

I can't believe how gullible and completely ignorant some people are. No one is capable of using any common sense or logic anymore. Dear lord

mr. tegu 08-27-2018 08:34 PM

The attention seeking behavior is definitely part of it. When you want attention you find ways to imagine or see things that aren’t there in order to have something to post on the internet. They get the sympathy from others but internally they also feel like they are desirable and unique, even if the perceived attention is negative.

Just in case anyone questions this further... we had this discussion in DC recently. The data has actually been checked regarding the numbers, and it's incredibly questionable... The hysteria is not backed by any actual numbers regarding trafficking.

Quote:

The U.S. government estimates that 600,000 to 800,000 persons are trafficked across international borders annually. However, such estimates of global human trafficking are questionable. The accuracy of the estimates is in doubt because of methodological weaknesses, gaps in data, and numerical discrepancies. For example, the U.S. government’s estimate was developed by one person who did not document all his work, so the estimate may not be replicable, casting doubt on its reliability. Moreover, country data are not available, reliable, or comparable. There is also a considerable discrepancy between the numbers of observed and estimated victims of human trafficking. The U.S. government has not yet established an effective mechanism for estimating the number of victims or for conducting ongoing analysis of trafficking related data that resides within government entities.

Given the weaknesses in data and methods, it also cannot be dismissed that the estimates may overstate the magnitude of human trafficking.

Or, it could have been "underestimated", Mr. Fish. Wildly underestimated, in fact.

What about rickshaws, for example? Did they count rickshaws?
