What I liked is how the dining room was separate from the bar so its an easy place to just sit and try things without feeling like you're in a full blown restaurant Unfortunately their live menu is QR code so its not really possible to see everything they have available prior to going They also have probably a dozen or so flavor infused barrels of varying flavors for cocktails. They let me try a Juicy Fruit Old Fashioned from one which was out of this world I'd definitely meet you there sometime |
InvinciBill, Why the **** did you downvote me?

I've been attempting to explore more regional bourbon/whiskeys

Big enough flavor to carry the proof We get their straight bourbon whiskey and straight rye distributed locally so I've been able to sample before buying Single barrels are distillery only but they ship to a bunch of states They're priced a bit high in the $50-60 range so the cask strength was a bit of a splurge for me |
My Costco has the Kirkland 1792 1L bottle for $20 so that’s my value purchase

I have been reading a lot about how the bourbon fad is in decline. It may be true as posts here have slowed also. The good news is some bourbon that was impossible to find is now being seen on the shelves in these parts with prices getting back within reason.

It's common for something like Eagle Rare to be marked up to $100 or more, and that's if you can even find it on the shelf ever. Hell, Weller Special Reserve (the crap green bottle) is going for probably double MSRP. And again, that's only if you can actually find one. |
It's kind of seasonal, too. A helluva lot of 'decent' bourbon gets purchased for gifting @ Christmas time. Bourbon's become trendy, compared to what it was 20 years ago. I keep a few bottles of 'unobtainium' around just for toasting football victories - or even sweet plays. It's really easy to talk me into drinking the good whiskey, given half a chance.

The amount of people at the raffles around here continues to climb so in my neck of the woods it is not in decline for sure. |
If you haven't done so you should check out the Ben Holladay offerings. Their bottled in bond and Soft Red Wheat are both excellent products for the price point. They are located in Weston, Mo and give a nice tour. If you go make sure to pick up a bottle of the Rickhouse Proof.
|
Holladay has been putting out solid stuff definitely.
|
I picked up a couple of bottles of 80 proof Very Old Barton early this week, on the MO side of the line - hard to find in KS. It may not be the BEST whiskey you'll find on the shelf. Might be the best $10/750 you'll find, so keep an eye out for it. One more tidbit of info - VOB is released @ 80, 86, 90 & 100 proof. I never see the high proof stuff around here these days, but in the old days that 90 & 100 proof VOB sure was good. Another FYI - in the good old days, they kept this stuff 'in the wood' til it was 5 years old or older. Nowdays it's usually 3 years old - but hey...$10 on sale in MO. Pretty hard to beat.

Scored some Wellers & BT after work. Welllers is now my absolute favorite what a damn good bourbon

I don't know if it counts as bourbon but Black Velvet has always been my thing. If I'm ever feeling extra rich I'll treat myself to some Jhack Daginals, but I honestly don't think it tastes any better than BV, and therefore the price feels outrageous to me.

My local just ran an auction for their allocation of Pappy 23, 20 and 15...auction is based on points accumulated in a variety of ways. Same gamesmanship in the auction had me missing out on the Pappy 20 by 500 pts (out of 17k points)..., and the shop admitted that the winner had gamed it. but not much they could do. I was bummed...so close and would have won had the guy not gamed it.
As a consolation, they sold me at retail a special bottling of Eagle Rare...very nice dram. Wish it wasn't a dry January or I'ld be hitting it hard. |
I'm loving Four Roses in my Old Fashioned lately. Very reasonably priced and quite smooth. And not the small batch or single barrel versions - just the regular. Just upgraded my whole setup and got the clear ice ball maker from Glacio. It works perfectly.

So much fail in that post. Is it any wonder this idiot got banned? |

It was too cold to go to my liquor store for '10% off regular price' Monday. So I opened a "reserved for later" bottle of Maker's Mark Private Reserve 107 proof. Delish! Way more powerful than my normal 87 proof, so I'll quit early. Go CHIEFS! I plan to call my amigo who gifted me this last year's Christmas present and thank him again.

Was traveling through Kentucky over the holidays. I came across Old Bardstown Bottled in Bond. "Willett's Finest Quality" 100 proof. It is, to my knowledge, only available in Kentucky. Hopefully will be available in a wider market. If you are driving I-64, stop and pick up a bottle for ~40 bucks.
BTW, I have had very good luck shopping in the Kroger liquor stores in Louisville and Frankfort. Good staff and large selection. https://thebourbonculture.com/whiske...ourbon-review/ |
Got a bottle of George t stagg and old fitz 10 year
Gonna open one Sunday for the game not sure which |

Scored another bottle of McKenna 10 and I've noticed it's not nearly as hard to find it as it was 6 months ago.
I now have 3 honey holes. What I've found is shooting the shit with the clerk about their store picks goes a very long way. They let it slip out when they get their allocations |

Also got Makers Private Selection and Buffalo Trace

Just found out about Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream. Blows Bailey's out of the water. Went camping over Memorial Day weekend and sipped this by the fire.

One of my former Amazon colleagues, who is a Bourbon lover and aficionado, has invited me over for cigars and bourbon.
I'll be bringing the cigars. Gonna try between 10-12. I'll do a mini shot of 1/2 oz to see if I can handle. As an Oban 14 or Oban 18 whisky drinker, I have a tough time with bourbon. Gonna be interesting to see what I can handle. I know I can do Makers Mark and Elijah Craig but know I'll be tasting some powerhouses. |
You'll be fine. Your 1/2 oz plan is a good one. If you get overserved - and it happens - call a cab.

My first experience with Blanton's was why is this so sought after? In subsequent trials, it's got to be the bottle it's not that good to be so hard to find. Pappy's is good I like it ok. But I have bottles and much more reasonable price points I like better. I won't turn it down if offered though. :D |

3 of us from work get together every 4 months or so at each other's place to have a whiskey tasting. This last Friday, it was at my friend's place. He had a Wild Turkey theme. He's got a ridiculous collection of stuff. The problem being once you've tried like 3 of them, all discipline goes out the window and you are just drinking whiskey. SO...I don't have much to report.
He DID have a bottle of 1988 Wild Turkey 101...that old label brought back memories of my dad...that was his favorite. He used to say "If it's good enough for President Johnson (LBJ) it's good enough for me!" We also sampled some more modern offerings from Wild Turkey. You just can't go wrong with Jack Russel and his stuff... A nice cigar and some top shelf whiskey day drinking...what a great day it was! |

Somewhat related - has anyone tried any of the Doc Swinson's line of bourbons/whiskeys? I was gifted a bottle and went through it pretty quickly. I enjoyed it that much. Now I'm on the hunt for more, but can't seem to track any down in the KC area. |

Like you, I also have a connection that can get me about whatever bottle I want, as long as I'll pay for it. I have a friend that LOVES Blantons and is perfectly happy pay $110/bottle for it. I don't get it, but to each their own. |
