It's been there around 3 years. That corner was a bit of a turnstyle before they took it over.

KCUnited is right...before them there was a place that was sort of trying to do a similar thing but was not nearly as good. Just didn't quite take.

It's classic drive in fare.

Not as good as upscale burger joints but better than McDonalds IMO.

Onion rings were amazing.

Pepe Silvia 01-26-2014 05:00 PM

Hi-Boy is the greatest, had it myself a couple weeks ago.

Simply Red 01-26-2014 07:19 PM

The key is; it's nostalgic.

Much like Funhouse.

It's junk food, but junk food done right.

there is a layer of russian dressing between the heel and the bottom of the patties.

They're better than in/out IMO.

The Peanut, although they seem to have gotten more inconsistent over the last year or so. At least my location, Main St.

gblowfish 01-26-2014 09:16 PM

I grew up on Hi-Boy. I live close to the one on 24 Highway and River. There's an old school location just North of Arrowhead on Blue Ridge, just north of 40 Highway.

I used to love their burgers, but as I got older, they got a little too greasy and didn't sit well in my stomach. Still love their Italian Steak sandwiches. Also, their onion rings used to be my favorite, but over the years I cracked not one, but two molars on their onion rings, so I quit eating them too.

Their Chocolate Shake is unbelievable.

Next time you go to Arrowhead, go in there for food for your tailgate. They open early on Sunday game days.

RJ 01-26-2014 09:20 PM

Paul Bunyan Burgers.

Mmmmmmm...........

Hammock Parties 01-26-2014 09:21 PM

How do you crack a molar on a damn onion ring? Maybe you need to brush more.

Sometimes the breading gets over cooked and is hard like a rock. Believe me, those onion rings cost me about $300 each.

It's soft serve. At least the one I had last night. It was like a Wendy's Frosty.

I can make a better shake at home.

Real ice cream shakes have a distinctive texture and consistency to them. The one I had was way too smooth.

I am a Land Surveyor we get all over the city and see all the places to eat. Hy Boy and Big Boy are just glorified Texas Tom's nothing special nor is there shake.

Woodsweather grill on woodsweather rd in west bottoms has awesome burgers and tenderlions and Itailian steaks.

LC's in Platte Woods great burger and I will put its shake up against any. Hayes Drive in Vivion Rd in North Land is good and of course Town Topic on Broadway. Hy boy is always a last choice.

They aren't special. They are better than McDonalds and Burger King, though.

If you don't want a 10 dollar burger, I think they are pretty decent options. Reminded me a lot of Braums from the South.

My next burger is going to come from BRGR though.

http://brgrkitchen.com/

And I hear they have amazing shakes.

Beer Kitchen has great burgers, too. Pricey, though.

Simply Red 01-26-2014 11:41 PM

|Zach| 01-27-2014 02:21 PM

Had not had HiBoy in years and it was just "ok" certainly overpriced for what it was those onion rings are pretty good though.

Whoever mentioned Beer Kitchen having good burgers is right but BK has pretty much good everything.

Bowser 01-27-2014 02:23 PM

I'll third the Beer Kitchen mention. Great food all around.

|Zach| 01-27-2014 02:27 PM

This is a weird recommendation but I stand behind it.

A burger at Brio on the Plaza.

I was getting something fixed at the Apple Store and had time to kill so I went to the bar there to get a few drinks and got hungry but not enough for one of their full meals. They had a bar menu and a burger and chips on it for like 5 or 6 bucks.

It was one of the better burgers I have had in a while...really well cooked with provolone cheese and roasted tomato mayonnaise.

Pablo 01-27-2014 02:38 PM

Yeah, I went to Beer Kitchen a while back from recommendations in this very thread.

Do it. You won't be disappointed.

Fire Me Boy! 06-24-2014 08:14 AM

I'm a pretty classic burger kinda guy. I don't like those burgers with a bunch of stuff mixed into the patty - eggs, breadcrumbs, onion, etc. That's meatloaf. A burger should be meat, salt, and pepper.

But this recipe from James Beard is intriguing.

Blog post: http://www.tastingtable.com/entry_de...ames_Beard.htm

Recipe: http://www.jamesbeard.org/recipes/my-favorite-hamburger

James Beard grates onion directly into the patty and uses cream to add richness.

KCUnited 06-24-2014 08:18 AM

Had a burger from Green Room Burgers & Beer last weekend. Good burger, I'd put it in a HiBoy category with better cheese options (I had Irish cheddar). Definitely not on Beer Kitchen's level, but still a good burger. Tank 7 onion rings were a plus. Above average beer list as well.

silver5liter 06-24-2014 08:26 AM

If you have never had the cheese burger from Pigwich, go now.

Kansas City Kid 06-24-2014 09:54 AM

Harry's Country Club Bar in the River Market has an excellent burger.

Eagle Drive Inn, Joplin Mo. Great burgers.

The Eagle Burger has a quail egg on it and surprisingly it tastes good.

If anybody remembers Wylie's (I think they had two or three locations in the 80s and 90s), the owners have a BBQ joint and they offer "The Wylie." You get the burger and a side for $6.99 and it's a really good burger.

Yeah, that burger is a beast. I might get it like once a year as part of something celebratory.

Not on Beer Kitchen's level, but Twin City Tavern puts out an above average bar burger. All they food is above average to really good actually.

Twin City Tavern was a place I used as a sponsor bar for a co-ed flag football league I used to run years ago. We played on Monday nights and they would keep the kitchen open late as usually would bring in 30-40 people. Great place!

They are great people. The kind of place where a shot of Jameson comes in a lowball glass. The kind of place that legitimately thought they were going to have close their doors when KC passed the smoking ban. I had forgotten how late that kitchen stayed open, they could go in the KC late night eats thread.
