That is because the president was Tusk's puppet. The only reason he was probably elected was with Tusk's backing. He let others be ruthless for him.

My wife and I finished the whole second season Saturday and Sunday. So well done. Going from that to the crap that is the walking dead was jarring.

This show is the best on TV because the dialogue is pure gold. It's always fast paced. Always keeps you guessing and on your toes. Other shows on TV tend to get boring, but not this one.

They are all playing each other the whole time and that makes it even more awesome. Everything relationship is political.

Mr. Flopnuts 02-21-2014 12:58 AM

This show is ****ing brilliant. As much as I enjoy being able to marathon the shit out of it, I hate having to wait a year for the new season to come out. I felt the same way last year. In fact, I'd say this season was even better and I find myself almost depressed a little that it will be 12 more months before I get to see it pick back up.

Episode 11 was the spoiler, and while they alluded to Frank's fancy pants past, no, I had no clue that one was coming down the pipes. Pun intended.

The final couple of episodes were just exhilarating as far as television goes. Lots of emotional ups and downs as you waited to see how things would play out. I tried watching the first episode of the original and was bored to death. Fincher and Spacey are absolutely making this show what it is. The acting is just superb by most of the major players.

kysirsoze 02-21-2014 08:01 PM

Just finished the season. Spacey's accent and some of Underwood's preposterous asides are distracting at times, but this is a consistently entertaining and engaging show. Some of it is predictable, but only because it's a kind of mystery. Good ones always give you enough to play ahead. However, it still has achieved the feeling that (almost) anything can happen and (almost) no one is safe. Those are my favorite shows to watch.

Spoiler!

While I LOVE having access to all of it at once, there is something to be said for having to wait for episodes.

For example, I'm having a ton of fun reading about, discussing, and analyzing every tiny bit of "True Detective". And that keeps the "buzz" on the show high for a longer period of time.

With this "all at once" format, nobody knows where anyone else is. You can't talk about it much, for fear of spoilers. Sure, you can talk after you know they've seen it all, but it's just not the same.

It is nowhere close to being as good as Breaking Bad. Frank is a cartoon character and everyone else is portrayed as a buffoon. House of Cards is fun, but it's nowhere close to being the best show on TV (so to speak). I'd give it a 6.

This is a little harsh, but I agree, it pales in comparison to Breaking Bad.

6 is a lowball, but stacking it against say, True Detective, now as they are "concurrent" doesn't have the same level of satisfaction. Either way, it's good, and no way a waste of time watching it.

It's entertaining, but I don't think it will be remembered 10 years from now. If Breaking Bad is a 10, then I'd put The Wire and The Sopranos at a 9s, Justified and The Shield at 8s and Lost and the Walking Dead at 7s. The only multi-dimensional character on the show was Russo (and maybe Zoe). Spacey and Wright do good job playing villains, but there isn't any humanity in either of them. Maybe I'm judging it too much on the 2cnd season. The first season was certainly better. I'm surprised at the lack of bigger name supporting actors in the 2cnd season. I figured that with all the buzz the 1st season got people would be lining up to do the show.

Frank just found out that Heroes is returning in 2015- in miniseries form to test the waters for the possibility of a full new season. He knows Claire will be super excited by this news.

As a former cheerleader also from Texas AND named Claire, she can't help but identify a bit as she too struggles to save the world on a day-in day-out basis.

100% agreement. I will never understand how/why they deviated so much from the source. The story was nowhere near as convoluted and boring. It gets right to the heart of that shit world and wallows in the shitty nasty gritty hell that living there would be. Instead we get a boorish look and over-hype of the source.

For a while I couldn't understand why HBO would pass on a money making series about zombies, but I have realized if they took the current form of the show how it is written and directed to HBO, comparing it to what they typically put out, it is pretty easy to see why they were willing to pass on it.

I finished season 2 today. Pretty good show but all of the lying and backstabbing gets a bit tiresome. It's like Frank is never not lying.

Anyway, I was really pissed when they killed off Russo. He was probably my favorite character on the show. Nixing Zoe in that fashion was a WTF moment as well.

Agreed. Although I'm sure there is some hot intern he can throw one in.

The one I'm most interested in is the Stamper storyline. He seemed to be the most genuine one out there, and now he appears to be dead. I'm sure they'll play it off as he fell off the wagon, but that was one of the best ancillary story line.

Discuss Thrower 01-19-2015 12:31 AM

Agreed on Russo being a character I'd like to see more of... And not just because of Kristen Connolly; he at least had some potential on his own merits.

Spacey wants to keep doing it as long as there is a good story to tell. While Season 3 isn't defined as the end, there is nothing official about a 4th season.

I agree. It was a great season but liked season 1 and 3 better.

I think the actor playing Doug should get an Emmy.

Shogun 03-01-2015 01:19 PM

I marathoned season 3 yesterday and I really really liked it. Its catching a ton of shit most other places just because Frank doesnt suceed quite like he did in season 1 and 2. People are failing to understand that once he reached POTUS, he was faced with some insurmountable challenges. He wasnt elected, probably his biggest challenge. Tons of bi partisanship and people at his throat. Its now no longer him being able to outwit everybody to get what he wants, he actually has to fight and claw for everything that happens, and it isnt happening quite as often as previous seasons, and that is okay. I mean house of cards is the name of the show and they have to show his downfall eventually.

I agree with you BRC, Doug deserves some sort of award, his acting is phenominal. A lot of people really didnt enjoy his arc this season and I have to think it is because they never appreciated Doug in the first place. IMO he is the 2nd most important character in the entire series, and at times he is a better actor than Spacey.

My issue is not with Frank struggling to come out on top more as it is the lack of focused agenda like you had in the first two seasons. And that is not an admonishment of the writing. To the contrary, they did exactly what they should have done with the story. As you say he was not elected. He did not run on any specific agendas. The first two seasons you had the specific agenda of revenge and taking he White House. There was no plan beyond just getting there. So the story is proceeding exactly as it should, with him flailing around trying to figure out what to do next. It is on point and it is superbly done. I just do not find it quite as satisfactory as the specific mission story line.

Episode one left me very bored and unsatisfied. Should I even bother with the rest of the season?

Chromatic 03-03-2015 03:20 AM

Season 3 was way inferior to the first 2. A lot of plots went nowhere and petered out for another plot. It was directionless and scatterbrained.

Hope the 4th season is the last because there's really not a lot left they can do with these characters.
