It's just too long; drop a couple of the 'filler' somgs and you'd have the classic 39-42 min DLR-fronted VH album.

Which is good enough for me.

A lot of good ones on there--surprisingly good. Many would fit right in on the 70s albums. Of course, many of them were largely written in the 70s, so that makes sense.

Interesting take. "1983...A Merman I Should Turn to Be" is my favorite Hendrix tune of all time, oddly enough.

I just started playing the bass a few months ago (after nearly 3 decades on the guitar) and I freaking love it.

as cliché as it sounds at this point, there's really no arguing that The Rolling Stones are actually the world's greatest rock and roll band.

Don't care who likes 'em or not, what anyone's opinion is; no one has done it better for longer. Their 'worst' album is better than most band's best, period.

Keith singing 'The Worst'...oh, irony.

Sure, there are black rock bands, though I doubt anyone would put them top 5, because none of them happen to be as good as a lot of others.TV on the Radio comes to mind.

You COULD argue for Otis Redding.

Hendrix was pretty good.

I've seen worse:

Puddle of Mudd, Nirvana, Disturbed?

Air Supply
Dr. Hook
The Little River Band
Captain and Tennille
Debbie Gibson

Honorable mentions:
Abba
Bread
America
The Beach Boys

LMAO

;)

Seriously, for me:

1. Stones
2. Zepplin
3. The Who
4. AC/DC-Aerosmith (tie)
5. U2-REM (tie)

Honorable mentions: CCR, Doobie Brothers, Boston, The Clash, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Talking Heads, REM, the Kinks, the Pretenders, RUSH, Foriegner, Judas Priest, Tom Petty, The Eagles, KISS, Van Halen, ZZ Top, The Police, The Cars, Clapton, INXS, YES, Eurythmics, Guns and Roses, Lenny Kravitz, Sublime, Collective Soul, and many others.

Contenders I'd admit to friends, but not to strangers list: (and some you may not consider "bands"): KC and the Sunshine band, the Gap Band, Parliament, Earth, Wind, and Fire, ELO, Fleetwood Mac, Styx, Queen, REO, Journey, Cheap Trick, The Scorpions, Jefferson Starship, Triumph, Nirvanna, Pearl Jam, Elton John, Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Cure, New Order, and Bon Jovi. Today, Nickelback, Linkln Park, Eminem, Nelly, Pink, and others.

that's Jimi on bass (a lot of Electric Ladyland was - Noel is on Crosstown Traffic, Little Miss Strange, Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and Burning of the Midnight Lamp. Jack Casady played on Voodoo Chile, there's no bass on Rainy Day Dream Away or Still Raining Still Dreaming, and Jimi did the rest himself - Mike Finnegan plays a walking bass on the Hammond Organ on Raindy Day and still Raining, and he's actually in the studio w/Trampled Under Foot right now, a little KC connection, fyi)

But that awesome ass bass solo in 1983 is totally Jimi.

Noel Redding was a hack.

Hells yes - I had never really played much before we started DW, and the original plan was for me and Ryan to play guitar, but we couldn't find a bass player, and we were writing songs and gigs were booked, so...crash course.

It's a different mentality than guitar; much more rhythmic, and subtle. The big thing for me was how to not attack a bass the way you might a guitar, like letting the notes breathe and be full. especially in a trio.

But Noel Redding, he seemed to never really make the switch from guitar to bass. He thought he was a star in his own right, equal to Hendrix, and that he would quit and be the lead guitar and vocal of his own band, Fat Mattress.

How many Fat Mattress records you own??

Yeah, I have the old Gene Simmons demos and the Cherokee Studios tracks from '75 - they pretty much improved each song, except for Beats Working and She's A/The Woman, I like the original lyrics to each one better. And in She's The Woman, the old one had the bridge from Mean Street in it, so the new one has a twist in it.

But musically, they're on top of their game. Never sounded better, and really don't miss ol' what's his name at all.

I was always into different music outside of my core hard rock/metal tastes, whether it was classical or jazz or whatever, and we were always adding funk, reggae, and blues (anything you could toke to really :D) elements to the stuff we were writing.

Over the years, I developed a certain somewhat percussive, hybrid rhythm/lead style on the guitar and never did really develop my lead "chops" because I'm just not dexterous enough. Ironically, I've found that this Neil Young-style hackjob guitar style translates really well to the bass.

As others have said it depends on my mood. These 5 are ones I can listen to at any time.

Neil Young (especially with Crazy Horse)
Allman Brothers Band
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Pink Floyd
Beatles

Pearl Jam, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Elton, Prince, Parliament and the Gap Band - yes. Those are all great artists and you shouldn't be ashamed to like them; even to strangers.

The early Jefferson Starship, sure.

I LOVE Fleetwood Mac. One of my all-time favorite bands, every single era. Peter Green, to the Kirwin/Spencer-fronted ensemble, then to Christine McVie/Bob Welch era, Stevie/Lindsey, Billy/Rick, Becca/Billy, back to Stevie/Lindsey (sans-Christine).

Fleetwood and McVie are SICK - everything they play has giant balls. Even You Make Loving Fun and Dreams, all the played out shit from Rumours still sounds amazing.

Nothing wrong with a whole buncha Mac at all.

Strongside 11-29-2012 01:38 PM

I can narrow down 5 if we're talking heavy metal:

Lamb of God
Pantera
Devildriver
Whitechapel
Opeth

Yeah, Fleetwood Mac I shoulda put with honorable mentions...the other stuff kinda of TIC, because I really love a lot of that stuff regardless of how great the artists were--it's the music that just takes me back to some great, great times.

gotchya. You'd be surprised at how many people think that the Experience were a 'real band'; it was all Jimi and, to a lesser extent, Mitch, aided by Kellgren and Kramer.

Jimi MADE Eddie Kramer's career.

that's a good way to be; I've found that there is inherently good and bad examples in everything - those who create, and then the imitators. It's pretty easy to seperate the good from bad.

I can totally see that - I'm a Neil disciple myself, and the apreggiated chords and the way he staggers notes lends itself to transferring to bass, that mode of playing. At least, it lends a fundamental working knowledge of the fretboard - Neil is def an atypical guitarist, not exactly a 'guitarists' guitarist' but totally created his own unique and identifiable styles.

Neil is one of my absolute favorites in everything he does; he's one of the truly rare 'rock' guitar guys who uses a completely different approach for acoustic playing as opposed to electric.

There's very little that I won't listen to. Sorry that they're your favorite bands. But my aunt had an 8-track player and I got my fill of bland, by-the-numbers 70's AOR Arena Rock. It's probably the soundtrack to your youth, nostalgia, etc.

Are you in high school?

Most people grow out of the "people who don't like exactly what I do don't know anything about music" stage by their early 20's when they discover that they don't know everything.

First off, to me Rock is Rock, not Pop. Therefore bands like the Beatles are out.

1. Led Zeppelin
2. AC/DC
3. Guns n Roses
4. Black Sabbath
5. Kiss

I wanted to nominate people like Chuck Berry, the Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, the Kinks, the Clash, Lynard Skynard, and others but they are either more pop or just not the top 5. I also love Ted Nugent but he is never taken seriously as one of the greats

To me when you hear great rock you have to wanna head bang and jump around and press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and run real fast and get whipped into a frenzy.

Do you whine this much in real life??

Wait...you listen to Journey, Styx, REO, Boston, and Foreigner.

You're a female, and it's your time of the month??

Change tampon, maybe???

Well, what I'm not is a sniveling little twat with an overblown sense of self-importance. Was your ex-boyfriend from Boston or something? Sorry about that.

Didn't come across as whining to me.

Perhaps you should step down from your "Good vs Bad" music pedestal....and GFYS with a rusty shovel

With all of the classic rock and metal listed, I'm a little surprised that more people didn't list Deep Purple or Judas Priest.

Deep Purple is tough because they went through so many line-up changes and some of them were flat AWFUL.

Judas Priest loses out to Motorhead and even Maiden in my list.

Meh.

Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore isn't really Deep Purple.

Yeah, that's where I fall, too. For instance, I like Steve Morse, but not in Purple.

Was very sad to see Jon Lord pass a few months ago.

I used to really like XTC. But alas Drivingwheel says they are Driv-Thru British Pop.
So I am throwing that shit out TONITE!

I don't really care for Judas Priest. I had "Hellbent For Leather" in high school and I still like that album but am not a big fan otherwise. My son now has almost all of their albums, so I get to hear them a lot. Yay (sarcasm).

I liked Rainbow more than Purple. I saw Rainbow in '81 (with Joe Lynn Turner instead of Dio, unfortunately) and it was a great show.

I was just surprised more people hadn't mentioned them.

I like Rainbow, too. Again, because of Blackmore.

I know I'm purging my iPod tonight. Only non-GMO music for me from now on! :thumb:

True, but like the Tommy Bolin-era didn't have the greatest studio output, but those live shows from back then were stunning.

Saw Steve Morse-led Purple with Don Airey on keys...decent show, but yeah, not the same.

Jon Lord was the man.

Have you heard any of Blackmore's Night? I'm a real sucker for that kind of stuff and think it's pretty good stuff.

I don't really like David Coverdale, so that colors my opinion a bit.

Part of it is that I really became "musically aware" and started to develop tastes distinct from my Dad's (he was a hippy :D) in the 1983-1986 timeframe, about the same time that Whitesnake hit it big. I wanted to see the guitar/rock mags cover Dio, Twisted Sister, and the like and they were covering Whitesnake and Poison instead.

Add to that that Vivian Campbell was in Whitesnake and I can't stand Campbell.

I ****ing hated Whitesnake and by association, David Coverdale.
