Amazing

WhiteWhale 12-27-2012 09:17 AM

This is why I wanted JC to supplant LJ on opening day 2008.

He started one game that year and shredded Gruden's bucs... and he did it one week after suffering a high ankle sprain which is usually 4-6 weeks recovery.

I didn't understand then and I still don't understand why JC wasn't a first round pick. It was all on tape. He was freaking awesome... and Dallas took Felix Jones instead.

I'm going to guess it was a combination of "he's too small - is he a track guy moonlighting as a football player"

I would understand that except for the fact that Chris Johnson is the exact same size and he went 1st round. Even years into JC's career he was called 'too small' in spite of the fact that CJ was coming off a 2k season at the same height/weight.

The biggest reason I thought that was bad take in 2008 was watching his games at Texas. This was not a guy who relied on speed entirely. You could see his willingness to run between tackles, he finished runs with physicality, and he had great vision in the open field. I saw a running back... but I guess a lot of NFL teams did not. I also think a lot of teams thought he only succeeded because of the Vince Young effect.

Easy 6 12-27-2012 09:41 AM

Yeah, its definitely odd that Johnson was ok for a top pick, but not Charles.

Just goes to show that all of the experts can be completely wrong in spite of their experience... what an inexact science it all is.

Hootie 12-27-2012 10:01 AM

I'll give Scott Pioli credit for a few things...one being the ridiculously team friendly contract he signed Charles for. If anyone deserves a raise, it's Jamaal Charles.

Hootie 12-27-2012 10:03 AM

I mean, read this shit:

12/11/2010: Signed a six-year, $27.97 million contract. The deal contains $13 million guaranteed, including an $8 million first-year roster bonus and $2 million of his second-year salary. Another $5 million is available through incentives. An annual $250,000 workout bonus is available in years two through six. 2012: $3.25 million, 2013: $1.75 million, 2014: $2.25 million, 2015: $4.75 million, 2016: Free Agent

Compare to Chris Johnson:

9/1/2011: Signed a six-year, $55.26 million contract. The deal contains $30 million guaranteed, including a $20 million signing bonus. 2012: $8 million, 2013: $10 million, 2014-2015: $8 million, 2016: $7 million (+ $2 million roster bonus), 2017: Free Agent

Hootie 12-27-2012 10:04 AM

literally...Jamaal Charles, who was probably just as good as Chris Johnson when signing his contract, was signed to a deal worth less than HALF as much as CJ.

He's underpaid. Probably deserves a little bonus.

AussieChiefsFan 12-27-2012 10:04 AM

Yea he really does deserve much more money.

Hootie 12-27-2012 10:05 AM

Pioli did one good thing...the players HE DID MANAGE TO KEEP he signed to team friendly contracts...letting Carr walk was inexcusable and possibly being a key reason why Bowe walks negates the positive contracts he worked out for Charles and DJ.

A caller on 610 this morning was trying to say how JC was not the long term solution at RB for the Chiefs. His reasoning was that he is not durable (injury prone and comes out of the game too much), fumbles too much, and runs too straight up and down.........:spock:

Seriously, we have to find these people and extinguish them from the gene pool ASAP.

LMAO Tolbert sucks. He's having a worse year than Hillis.

aturnis 12-27-2012 12:33 PM

That is why Pioli is an idiot. In each of the last 2-3 drafts, there have been big, talented RB's available at a steal late. Vick Ballard comes to mind, as does MarShawn Lynch.

Um, Lynch was picked in 2007.

But you're right. Hillis and Draughn are garbage. We have no idea if Gray can play.

AussieChiefsFan 12-28-2012 05:59 AM

"A running back who averages five yards a carry for his career is doing something extraordinary. Five yards a carry is better than Walter Payton averaged, better than O.J. Simpson averaged, better than Eric Dickerson averaged, better than Emmitt Smith averaged. A 5.0 average is what Barry Sanders and Gale Sayers had in their careers, and it’s currently Adrian Peterson’s career average as well. Going above 5.0 is the most rarefied air a running back can reach. For Charles to close out his fifth NFL season while carrying a 5.8-yard career average is remarkable."

-Michael David Smith of NBC Sport's PFT.

chefsos 12-28-2012 08:37 PM

I don't know if anyone noticed, but he did get the FedEx ground player of the week award. Kind of a no-brainer though, based on the numbers.

"The NFL announced Friday that quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and running back Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs are the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week for games played on Dec. 22-23.

Charles gained 226 yards on 22 carries, averaging 10.3 yards per carry and one touchdown in the Chiefs' 20-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts."

It's pretty remarkable, but I'll bet Charles has half the carries those guys had their first 5 seasons. Charles didn't even play much his rookie year. Charles avg would decrease if he got 350 plus carries a year. Charles has never had a 300 carry year yet.

You do know that he averaged 5.9 ypc when he was getting 20+ carries a game in '09 after he took over for LJ, right?

Rain Man 12-30-2012 11:09 AM

In games this season where Charles had 20 or more carries, he has 159 rushes for 933 yards (5.9 yards per carry).

In games where he had less than 20 carries this season, he has 112 rushes for 523 yards (4.7 yards per carry).

Both are good numbers, but it seems like getting more carries helps him.

Interestingly, there were three games where he had fewer than 10 carries. If he'd been given the ball more and gained the average number of yards in his other 12 games, he'd be at 1,799 yards right now.

Easy 6 12-30-2012 11:24 AM

I would like to ask for a collective chiefsplanet prayer, hoping this guy makes it out of the game unscathed.

Better yet, i hope he gets a hammy early on and sits it out, why cast pearls before swine.

I would respectfully disagree. No injuries. Just let him run for 200 yards and then go out for a sensible meal afterwards.

JohnnyHammersticks 12-05-2013 11:26 PM

I had the same thoughts as the OP the other day. What an unbelievable running back this guy is. One of the toughest backs in the league. Totally under-appreciated outside of Chiefs fans. He should anyway, but if he gets a ring before he retires (both hopefully with us), how in the hell could they keep him out of the HOF? Especially if he's the top RB in terms of YPC of all-freaking-time. If he finishes out his career the way he's started it, he should go down as one of the greatest in history. He's that good, and he's done it all with little to no passing game to make defenses play honest. What a freaking stud Jamaal Charles is. One of the best to ever put a Chiefs uniform on.

Pablo 12-05-2013 11:36 PM

Charles is so amazing to watch play. We're lucky as shit a guy this good plays for us.

Chris is arrogant and doesn't have the right mindset. Jamaal's #1 goal isn't how much money he's making, or how good he is compared to other RB's. Jamaal wants to win, that's what sets him apart.

Well, he didn't break 2,000 scrimmage yards or 20 TDs although he likely would have if he played in week 17 or even the 4th quarter of the Redskins/Raiders games; but he averaged 5 YPC on the season.

That makes 6 out of 6 seasons in the NFL, all of which he averaged 5 or more YPC. That's incredible.
