Too many to name really.
But 'Stop Dragging my Heart Around' is awesome The combination of Nicks and Pettys voice with Campbell's guitar is pure magic. |
I cannot pick a single song from that list. There are too many that are excellent.

Never realized how many hits Tom Petty has. My goodness at that list!
That said, I never was a huge fan of his voice... |
Sorry can't vote either, way too many songs I'd consider favorites. This is one that gets cranked up when it comes on in the Jeep.

From wiki..... The track was recorded in 1984. It was during the recording of this track that Petty broke his hand. Petty remembers being so high on drugs that he couldn't get an arrangement he liked. Petty went into the control room, and put the original demo tape on, which featured just him and a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar. He believed that they had yet to record an arrangement better than this demo, which made him so furious that he stormed up the stairs into his house, and punched the wall, causing severe damage to his left hand. After a while, Tom Petty called Jimmy Iovine in to help him finish "Rebels" along with some other tracks on Southern Accents. Alan "Bugs" Weidel, Tom's roadie, considers "Rebels" a least favorite of his due to Petty's broken hand. |
As an aside, the poll is comprised of the top half of Rolling Stone Magazine's list of Petty's 50 greatest songs (plus a Wilbury song that I had to add unilaterally). Check out this list if you want to take a stroll down Petty Lane.

I picked Last Dance. Almost picked Breakdown, You Got Lucky, Into the Great Wide Open. I got sick of Free Fallin a long ass time ago.

Full Moon Fever is a better album than most band's greatest hits... |
Damn the Torpedoes came out when I was a sophomore in high school. It was a massive hit and Petty was everywhere on the radio. I liked the songs well enough but never bought any of his albums. Over the years, I was familiar with his hits but still never bought any of his stuff.
Over the last couple of years, I have been accumulating a lot of 70s and 80s music and I now have all of his 70s and 80s albums, including the solo and Wilburys albums and really like all of them (except for the Wilburys songs that feature Bob Dylan). After seeing this thread this morning, I have been listening to his latest albums on Spotify (Nobody's Children and Hypnotic Eye) and - wow! - they are really good. I've been missing out. |

Great live version. He must have had a bad cold, he kept checking his nose. |

Free Fallin'.
No doubt. That song takes me back to Texas as a 5 year old, helping my dad lay tar on a roof under the hot sun. Free Fallin' and Rush's Tom Sawyer. |
