ERA is not a terrible stat, in that some of the other traditional stats (RBI, AVG) are pretty useless whereas ERA usually is a halfway-decent way to compare pitchers.

In this case it doesn't quite work, the advanced stats all point to Max, but Vargas has still been quietly putting together a really good year.

Usually he's better against teams that don't jack it out of the park with regularity. Detroit is 2nd in runs scored in the MLB, #2 in OPS and 2 home-runs away from 5th in Total Home Runs hit. Throwing it right down the middle doesn't work as well against good offensive teams.
