Looks like it was a Bothrops.

And here's an old pic of some of the tissue damage these guys can induce. Nasty, wicked ****ers. Warning, NSFW

That's why you have to cut affected tissue, clean the area, and start them on an Immunoglobulin antivenom all simultaneously.
