Why do you insist on looking at it that way?
The Cubs mortgaged a part of their future for an asset that they hope will help them win in 2017, 2018, 2019.
The Sox got a haul of prospects (including a top 5 out of 100) to further bolster a strong farm system (thanks, Chris Sale and Adam Eaton!). So they have loads of potential.
But as the Cueto-Zobrist trades demonstrate, it depends on what you're looking for. I'm more than happy to pocket that World Series title and don't give a whit what any of those players we traded ever do. To me, the Royals got what they wanted and that's all that matters.
Sean Manaea might win 3 Cy Young awards for Oakland, which is more value than Zobrist would've given them, but does that mean the Royals "lost" the trade?
It's possible both the Cubs and White Sox won that trade, if each gets what they want out of it.
