Joe Lauria a weather guy at fox4kc always reports aches and pain on days when the barometric pressure changes. I always thought wtf is he talking about? Then at about 58 I learned. As when he reports it my joints and arthritis really flare with pain. At 62 I was told my cartilage was at the bone-on-bone stage and to start thinking about knee replacements. He said he could give cortisone shots into the joints but that its probably at a stage it won't help. They can also do a thing that like lubes up the joint but has its own nasty side effects and can cause more trouble than it's worth. So far I grin and bare it as I don't get to the field as often as before. He also said the human knee was not designed for a life as long as we now live. The ground pounding and climbing in and out of ditch ravines foothills and mountains that you hoof while surveying the land wore it out. you need new tires.

I do not wish to admit it, but I qualify for this thread.

I'm recovering from shingles. I'm 53, which I didn't consider old before this. Also, I've had the shingles vaccine.* I went to the doc shortly after turning 50 and was told that I needed to take the vaccine. Turns out the shingles vaccine doesn't prevent you from getting shingles. It just means that if you do get it, then it's not as bad. If this is 'not as bad,' I don't want to see bad. I've got so many shingles I half expect to be nailed to a roof.

I remember when I was about 18 I had to go help an older couple who were in our church. They needed something done at the house, moving some furniture or something. They were in their late 70s. Anyway, the wife had shingles and the husband told me to call before coming over because his wife had shingles. I asked my dad about it and, this being pre-vaccine, he said that people with shingles frequently don't wear many clothes because it is quite painful. From that, I took away that shingles was an old person's disease and that I didn't want it. And I realize that my dad was right. This is really miserable and I don't wish it on anyone.

So, now I have shingles like an old fart.

As one friend of mine said a few years ago on a fishing trip, "This getting old shit is getting old."

* this is NOT DC and I'm not discussing any other vaccine. Nor should you in this thread.

If it makes you feel better my 40 year old daughter just recovered from shingles. And she runs marathons. So I wouldn't necessarily use shingles as a measuring stick.

I don't know. She was well into her 70s so I didn't want to find out. But she did not appear when I went over to their house.

One of my high school friends contracted shingles in his early 40s. After he described what he was going through, I got vaccinated for it the next day.

Old man crept up and slapped the shit out of the young man in me last night. Lesson was don't try to jump your fence like a gazelle any more. Walk around to the other side and use the gate like a normal grown adult.

Yeah, I'm approaching retirement. The other day I walked by a school playground and realized that I wouldn't trade places with those kids. They may have more time left on earth, but I'm pretty much done with all of the hard parts and now I'm going to have fun.
