Not a big Taxi Driver fan, actually.

In no particular order, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York... I think Casino's better than The Departed, too.

Truth be told, I'm pretty sure Scorsese won the Oscar for The Departed because he got jobbed on Gangs of New York. They do that sometimes when they realize the wrong movie won.

I like Taxi Driver better than Gangs of New York, and Goodfellas better than either. I think the bigger jam job was him not winning for Goodfellas, not Gangs of New York, just my opinion. I consider Goodfellas to be his best work by a decent margin. Everything about it is awesome.

I saw that Scorsese has a Teddy Roosevelt movie and a Sinatra movie in the works, too, but I'm not sure if he's directing or producing or both.
A Roosevelt film could be awesome, he lived quite a compelling life.

Will do. I always appreciate these types of recommendations.

Love all those films but i think Departed is better than Gangs of NY.

Your right though, Departed was more a lifetime achievement award but its still a very strong film.

My faves of his are Taxi Driver, Goodfellows, Alice doesnt live here Anymore,..heck, they are all good. I even love Cape Fear.

And I'll again repeat that while probably the most loyal (to the original material) CB flick EVAR it's not for kids.

That, and this is the first time I've ever watched a movie that changed the ending (or cause of ending) of a book/comic/graphic novel that IMPROVED upon the original. Yes, the ending is BETTER in the flick (and more plausable) than the comic.

I think the ending to the movie is far more believable and at the same time delivers the punch-to-the-gut moment the original story did...

The giant squid ending to the comic made sense within the context of the comic book medium. There is a long history of sci-fi/monster comics... and sense Watchmen the graphic novel was more than anything a commentary on comics & superheroes, the giant squid seemed apropos despite being silly.

Now Zach Snyder correctly saw the need for the Watchmen movie to be a commentary on comic book movies. That's why you get the redesigned costumes and a revised ending that is more scientific/modern.

Who doesn't love Marty? Especially any movie fan, for all that he has done in preservation and presentation, by that I mean introducing film as a serious art worthy of appreciation to a larger audience.

I definitely look forward to Shutter Island.

There are still some movies of his I need to see (Kundun, The Color of Money, New York Stories, Bringing out the Dead, and Shine a Light), but I'd rank my favorite 10 of his movies like this:

1. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
3. Goodfellas
4. Mean Streets
5. The Age of Innocence
6. The Last Temptation of Christ
7. The Departed
8. No Direction Home
9. Gangs of New York
10. Casino

"All we got on this team are a buncha Jews, spics, ****ers, pansies, and a booger-eatin' moron!"

Me thinks you won't hear that kind of line from movies coming out these days. The original Bad News Bears was a masterpiece of political incorrectness.

L.A. Chieffan 07-22-2009 01:38 PM

scorsese rules, departed sucks

It's awesome in it's 70's-ness; the coach is smoking, drinking, drinking and driving, smoking and drinking during games, and the kids are little miscreants who cuss like sailors.

It's beautiful.:(
