I used to love Steak & Shake when I was in high school. After high school, I didn't see one again until a couple of years ago. It was on the way home from KC in Oklahoma. I almost slammed on the brakes when I saw it, I was so excited. Didn't live up to the memory, though. I'll probably never eat there again.

FlaChief58 09-15-2017 05:11 AM

They had to shut our local one down for 2 weeks to get rid of the roach infestation

srvy 09-15-2017 07:06 AM

I dont eat S&S often but when I do its single cheeseburger rings and a coke. I have better options closer to my home. Id pass by Hayes Hamburgers before S&S and I rather get their cheeseburger or if I feel like getting sloppy single with chili and cheese.

Like Timmod im not a huge fry fan unless they are really special. As far as ketchup I dont put on mashed or baked potato so certainly not fries.

patteeu 09-15-2017 08:19 AM

I ate at S&S last night because of this thread. The double cheeseburger was good, but the onion rings were terrible, IMO. They tasted like bread rings to me, kind of like Burger King's version.

Steak n Shake is very popular in St. Louis. It's like their version of Winstead's. A couple of tips if you go there:

1) For breakfast, you can get a bagle with egg and cheese, and instead of sausage, substitute a steak burger. Killer breakfast sandwich. One of my favorites. It's a touch greasy, but man is it good.

2) SnS sells big bags of ice for $.99, which is a tremendous value. I usually buy one and put it in my freezer for making ice tea and such.

3) Service is slow because they make stuff as you order it. So don't go if you're in a hair on fire hurry. It's worth the wait.

Ok GB - I ordered the plain bagel + one patty steak burger, cheese and tomato - no bacon but next time will add bacon - quite the good choice - Sleeper menu item there!

Fire Me Boy! 09-19-2017 07:56 AM

Went to S&S on Saturday with the wife. As usual, I ordered lunch for breakfast. The burger (my usual, a double steakburger) was inedibly greasy that day. Never had that before from that location, but I only ate about 2 bites.

Sorry to hear that - I think (like anywhere) the cook you happen to have, has a lot to do with what you wind up getting. But yeah, unfortunate, your experience.

I know. Until Saturday I'd never really had a bad experience at that location. It's not going to ruin S&S for me.

Steak n Shake FTW.

It's a steakburger and it's pretty damn good. Quality is top notch. The Freddy's around here are really good. Other than Pepsi products to drink.

Yes the Cpt D's sauce was a yellowish and had bits of pineapple in it - I'll try to find a photo - I think they MAY still have it available.

Their fries are really good if you order them "well done." And the burger is well above average. Who gives a shit about the bag?

You probably like McDonald's and Burger King.

truth.

until i started telling them to cook the fries well done, I had pretty much written them off. their fries Suu*******ed. greasy, soft, limp. like the oil isn't hot enough to get a crunch on them.

last few times I've been very pleased with it.

the beauty of the 5guys fry is - they're whole potato to fryer, in a world of organic hipsters, I'm not sure what the **** more you guys want.

lcarus 09-19-2017 10:41 AM

I prefer Freddys but they seemingly raised their prices. Its now $8.50 for the #1.

lcarus 09-19-2017 10:45 AM

Also dont care for SnS or Freddys fries. I prefer thick steak fries not the little limpdick shoestring fries. Theyre still pretty decent though

gblowfish 09-19-2017 11:17 AM

I had SnS for breakfast this AM. They were out of bagles so they made my sandwich on sourdough. It was good.

CRISPY STEAK FRIES WITH NO SKIN AND A LITTLE OIL STILL IN THEM!

Five Guys fries are shit

I would fry Ore Ida Steak Fries in my grandmothers cast iron deep skillet after melting about 1/2 can of Crisco. NO ONE has ever been ever able to duplicate the crispiness, lightness and little bit of oil that added flavor in the last 30 years.

95% of all the fries I have had in the last 20 years are soggy or undercooked or flavorless or all of them! :shake:

I ALWAYS ask for my fries, extra crispy!

WORST FRIES in the last 20 years: In and Out Burger.

Love a big long, hard, thick fry. LCs BBQ had the best fries Ive ever had. They were crispy and delicious. But the last time I went there they were underwhelming.

Honestly, I prefer Freddy's over Steak and Shake but with a caveat. At Steak and Shake I usually only get the chili 5 ways and a shake.

At Freddy's it's a steak burger w/grilled onions. And they are pretty damned good.... :)

DaneMcCloud 09-19-2017 02:43 PM

I'm almost always disappointed in french fries, regardless of the restaurant.

That's been exacerbated greatly since purchasing an Air Fryer. For $2 dollars, I can purchase a 2 pound bag of any french fry of choice (Seasoned Fries, Curly Fries, Crinkle Fries, Tater Rounds, Steak Fries, etc.) and cook them to perfection.

It's at the point where my kids don't even want me to purchase fries with their meals anymore, which is actually a good thing.

The AF does do a nice job with frozen fries.

Steak N Shake is great. Best value for the money by far. Not a fan of the type of fries, but they taste good. I particularly like the Frisco Melt and the Cajun Burger.

Last time I went into a S&S the owners husband was eating near the front and you can tell he was quite hammered.

Some younger black guy was running his ass off working the grill area while the drunk guy was telling his cook that he was a no good negro and cooking for 8.50 an hour. The waitress came up and told us this is a thing that the guy has done before.

Paid for my food, called the owners husband a worthless **** and I've never been back since. I hope that dude found a different job.

Yeah - they were in trouble 'financially' - at least here in Atlanta - they've closed a few - I'm almost positive there are a few left tho. I like their burgers as well.

Simply Red 09-20-2017 12:01 PM

Yes - we have 8 or 9 locations left - maybe less maybe more - but roughly that.

First: I like their burgers.

I do stand-up comedy as a hobby, and have a segment about the lack of truth in advertising - with restaurants being the biggest culprits. Steak & Shake? Yeah, they
don't actually serve steak. Plus, it sounds like a place you would go to kill vampires,
but only if you have epilepsy. :D

Their lunch $4 options are a hell of a deal - occasionally I'll get the triple hamburger and fry after adding cheese and tax it's something like $4.86

Now I DO like Culvers, but all things in the mix; Steak and Shake is doing better things for the community by being MUCH more affordable.

Went to our new one today (second day open). Everything was awesome. The shake came out a few minutes before the burger (which doesn't happen at the other one). Not sure why they bother to ask dine in or carry out, since the presentation was the same.

The cacophony of 12 women yelling "WELCOME TO SHAKE AND STEAK," not in unison was a little disturbing, but worth a laugh. I'll be back.
