It's Science

convenience and 2 years has it paid for

it's mainly an issue of convenience

if I didn't have a treadmill here I definitely wouldn't do my daily 1 hour of cardio - no way jose.

Tell your wife to pace back and forth in a room.

Have you considered divorce? I mean, it's slightly more expensive, but the additional benefits might change your mind...

An elliptical may be a better choice

Have you considered buying a home where the kitchen is on the opposite side of the house as the laundry room?

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet. I'd buy one off craigslist if I were you. You can find a great deal on one that someone bought but used once or twice before going back to couch living.

My house has a front staircase and a back staircase, so I can actually run stairs and laps indoors. Back when we had two young cats, it was funny when they would chase each other. You'd be in the living room and one of them would light out after the other and they'd run up the front stairs, and then you'd hear the thumping of eight paws as they ran down the hallway, and then you'd hear the thumping of them coming down the back stairs, and then back through the kitchen and dining room to the living room where they'd settle back down right where they started.

Was recently in the same situation, save no treadmill but elliptical.

We now own an elliptical.

Both. Like anything with moving parts, it's going to wear. Just pay attention to what the instructions say. If nothing else, get the plan for the first year, maybe two, and see what they do...

Fall into them, enjoy yourself...and blame the captain....

I'd never compare the two... A treadmill is awesome and I think you should get one. I belong to two gyms (a third soon), it helps when you travel, but I have gear at home too. While a gym can be a drag to get up and go to (AM workouts are best for me, evenings are just too difficult to plan), but there are times you just can't get there. So the TM works just fine to alleviate the guilt...

That being said, a gym offers a lot too. Short of the BS social club that so many are (another minus for evening hours at the gym!), they do usually offer a good atmosphere when you want to be around other folks who want to lift. And the wide array of gear that most folks can't for a basement becomes a must if you're going to lift everyday. The bowflex thing didn't quite work for me...

Anyway, I think money spent on your health is well spent if used, so one night out drinking call drinks will cost you far more than all these combined (yeah, you can only do so much to lead a healthy lifestyle!), so take one Friday or Saturday night and do this instead. Best nights for the gym too IMO!
