Um, it has everything to do with Alien. He said the last 1/4 of the film is a direct prequel to Alien. It has the bloody derelict ship FROM ALIEN in the movie...and stuff about the space jockey.

I love Alien. I love Aliens. I own them both and view them regularly. That's it. It's fine to let it go. A quick homage would be neat, but I became FAR more interested in this after I figured out it wasn't an Alien prequel. I like Ridley Scott. Safe sucks... I want something new. I'm very intrigued by this.

I would agree, except that he clearly showed the space jockey in the very first trailer. If the movie has nothing to do with Alien, then he's guilty of a bait and switch.

keg in kc 03-30-2012 09:48 PM

If it's awesome, who gives a **** whether it's tied in with alien or not.

This keeps looking better & better, its almost up there with Batman as my must see movie.

Maybe its already been said, and its just a guess, but i think we're going to see that the human race is creating artificial life that will come back to bite us in many of the same ways, as the alien race' artificially produced life ultimately comes back to haunt them them.

Just cant wait, its probably going to be the best, most thought provoking sci-fi in atleast 25 years.

A legitimacy.

It reminded me of The Watchmen.

They used unknowns but truly talented actors...

No prob, i do think the, for lack of a better word... serious... direction & tone of the new one helped a lot, it somehow lost the fairly corny feel i get with the others.

But no question, hes a very good actor.

Thats a perfect comparison, both in casting & overall tone... i'd also venture that writers & director totally aped techniques from that movie, wish i could put my finger on it... but they somehow, with Zack Snyder & Chris Nolan leading the way, make you accept the circumstances very matter of factly.

Watchmen was way, waaay better imo... but i didnt feel cheesed out the with the new X-Men, a real first.

If your talking about the legs ~2:40, its not a xeno, its one of the engineers/space jockeys. There is a lot of speculation that the movie has no xenomorph that we are accustomed to, but rather some other really cool stuff. It is definitely of the "alien" universe but not exactly a direct prequel to the alien original movie.

No, I'm talking about the lady who was giving the presentation in the first shot of the trailer. She was crawling on the ground backwards looking at the Xenomorph approaching her.

I was actually watching the original Alien film the other day on one of the cable channels. Its amazing how much slower paced it is than the blockbusters of today. I think its brilliant the way its basically a slow burn and fairly quiet in some parts.

If this is an "origin story" about the creation of the Alien, i wonder how the Alien queen comes into play in all this? Or is Scott ignoring the Sequels?

So i guess it opens tomorrow in France some reviews are out.

Some French to English translations using Google translator:

Prometheus ?: long and boring, with all the clichés of science fiction scenario in which an ultra-awaited effort and credibility. big disappointment

In terms of pure SF - aesthetic inventiveness, references to the classics - # Prometheus is a real success

Prometheus Finally a great science fiction film, the first for some time (Moon? District 9?)

There's going to be weird creatures, and probably references to the classic xenomorph. I'd wager there will be at least one chestburster based on the fact it's a direct prequel to Alien.

Where did you hear that it was a direct prequel? Everything Ridley has said is that its a prequel to the "events" from Alien, but it is not the prequel.

I read a Ridley interview. he said initially the project started out to be a pure prequel. then other things got in the way and it sat for years. he went back to it and decided that he wanted it be able to stand alone and apart from the Alien movies....but in his words "it shares DNA with the Alien series". it's going to be very interesting to see how he can pull that off. the space jockey was obviously "chest bursted" as clearly seen in Alien and Aliens the uncut version. the space jockey is alive and well in this movie as seen in the trailers. I......can't......wait! I'm stoked.

by the way......I LOVE it that some reviews are bad. I find that often times I really dig moview that critics hate.

frankotank 05-30-2012 12:21 PM

here's a good question. I have a hard time answering it.

which is the better movie? Alien or Aliens????

they are both so frigging AWESOME, yet they are so very very different. Alien is all about suspense and for the longest part of the movie imagination. Aliens is more in your face action. both have great story lines. part of me wants to go with Aliens because...it's just badass. but you just can't discount Alien, it too is badass, just in a different way. it's tough. push come to shove......I just can't decide.....

Back in my younger years, I would have definitively said that Aliens is one of those rare occasions where the sequel is better than the original. It's got so many great elements. Space marines, pulse rifles, great characters, suspense, hordes of xenomorphs, memorable quotes, etc. Clearly a better movie than Alien (which I had only seen once around 7th or 8th grade).

Then several years ago I went back and watched Alien again. Holy crap, that's a great movie. I don't know what my younger self was thinking. Even when you know all about xenomorphs, it's still extremely intense and suspenseful. The cinematography is beautiful, and the acting is top-notch (anything with both Ian Holm and John Hurt has to be good). One of the few sci-fi films from that era that holds up today.

I'd have to call it a draw.

That will be interesting, especially since they are not on LV-426 and the trailer shows the Jockey ship crashing/smashing into the prometheus. Either way I think they will indeed shed a LOT of light about the jockeys in general. I just dont think they will show anything about the jockey ship getting to LV-426.

Two more days to go. Lots of Alien/Aliens fans (note: not that Alien 3 or AVP crap) have waited a long time for an explanation of the jockey(s).

Reviews are starting to roll in now at RT. 89% positive so far.

I'm not going to read any of them because I want to risk spoiling anything before I see it, but I'm really, really getting stoked about this.

keg in kc 05-30-2012 03:34 PM

I expect the RT reviews to be a little more on the negative side than we might hope. I think high concept ideas are a harder sell than popcorn stuff like Avengers (which isn't saying it was bad in any way...) so I expect there to be a wider range of reactions, especially among the top critics, few of whom are nearly as smart as they think they are. We'll see, though.

This is true. I remember my parents going to see it when it first came out and they came home and told me it was crap. I watched it a year later on cable and hated it. Didn't watch it again for at least 10 years then I really enjoyed it. I think it's brilliant now. The "Space Jockeys" are just an environment type suit for something else. Maybe more than one something. We've already seen space jockey suits for humans in the Prometheus trailer. That's not to say that the space jockey suit in Alien was for a human per say. Cause it was huge. But I think it's just a suit.

This was in the background in the trailer, lightened up to show the suits.

By the time Buck Rogers came along I was getting old enough to recognize crappy shows aimed at kids for what they were. And seriously, could they not have created some new explosions? They reused the explosions from Battlestar Galatica, which had itself reused them over and over. The one shot where three bursts are fired and then the enemy ship explodes in the top right corner of the screen - they must have used that 1,000 times.

Saw it last night- and really liked it. Didn't find it very scary, and the film both stands on its own even if you never saw the Alien franchise, and yet explains the origins as well as setting up additional prequels - that are more spinoff to main goal of this mission.

If it wasn't scary, did it at least have awesome shock value?

I loved the shock value of the predalien forcing alien embryos down the pregnant woman's throat in AvP 2.

Ya there are some tense parts, one that I was literally squirming in my seat. They are serious about keeping this under wraps, I had to turn in my cell phone, everyone got metal detector wanded anytime you entered the theatre, and had probably 4 people at any time standing at the corners of the theatre.

The 3D was done very well, imo, and I don't want to spoil it for anyone. That said, I can see where others may have different expectations based on the aliens franchise, but I liked it a lot, and this is def. not a retread of the the Aliens movies- like I said this movie really could stand alone, and I'm interested to see if they explore this other plot line that is what the main goal of the mission and quite interesting within itself.
