I'll probably be okay as long as it's not before 6pm CST. I know Buck won't be able to do that though.

Old Dog 08-09-2009 12:49 PM

Evening I'm good with, but we're looking at late night to an early morning ending.
90 seconds per pick x 22 rounds x 12 teams = a possibility of 6.6 hours. I know that in the first couple of rounds it shouldn't be a big issue, but history tells me that nearer the end of the draft most teams will use most of the clock.
A five hour draft is not out of the question. That would have an end time of 1am Central with the current settings.

doomy3 08-09-2009 12:54 PM

I haven't set any of the roster settings in stone though. I would like to do the IDP thing since I've never done one and would like to try it, but if people want to cut down on the time of this thing, we could cut down on that some.

Do me a favor, and post what dates/times WON'T work for you, and I'll do my best to find a time that works for most people.

doomy3 08-09-2009 12:55 PM

I can't do Sunday August 30th, unless it's a late starting draft (8:00 CDT at the earliest)

Old Dog 08-09-2009 12:58 PM

IF it would help I'll do it on the 29th (though I already have one draft and one auction going on that day, I can do two at once).
Any other date is OK, but I would prefer to start no later than 6pm regardless of the date. As noted above, we're likely looking at 5+ hours.

Old Dog 08-09-2009 12:59 PM

of course the 29th is also the KC vs Seattle game, so that might be a turn-off to that time/date for some.

I started these fantasy leagues' last year & haven't participated in a draft yet & have ended up with decent teams.

Try as you might you're not gonna make everyone happy. Set a time & those of us who can't make it, make sure to rank your playa's.

Buck 08-09-2009 03:48 PM

If its on a weeknight, and before 6pm Pacific time, I'm not able to do it, bottom line.

If I'm not drafting live, I dont want to be in the league.

Well, hopefully everyone in the league doesn't feel that way, because there's no way to find a time that will work for everyone.

For clarification is that on a weeknight before 6pm or any day before 6pm PST?

Weekend I can do anytime or I can do 6pm Pacific or later on any weeknight.

JOhn 08-09-2009 10:55 PM

IF you did a weekday/night, Tuesdays or Wednesdays are great for me...anytime,

The rest of the week I work till 10pm cst (9pm here), but can get off if I have to.
Any late morning early after noon is good for me also. But I can manage to work around most anything, It's good to be one of the bosses :D

rageeumr 08-10-2009 08:46 AM

I know a couple people are into doing the IDP thing, but if we didn't do IDP, we could cut the draft to 14-16 rounds (depending on how many bench spots). That could theoretically cut the draft time down by 1 hr 48 mins to 2 hrs 24 mins. That puts us more in line for a 3:00 to 3:30 draft and more manageable for an 8 PM start time.

Old Dog 08-10-2009 08:50 AM

I like the IDP thing, just because I haven't done it before.

rageeumr 08-10-2009 08:54 AM

As far as my schedule, I typically work a regular 8-5. Most weeknights are free. Weekends are hit or miss.

I'm with Buc, if I can't make the draft, it's just not worth it to play. I have never had even a halfway decent experience pre-ranking, even if I spent a ton of time on it. There's just no way to account for who everyone else is going to take. If there's a run on QB's for example, you could end up with 4 RB's and Kyle Orton.

I'm not too worried about it though, if it works out, great. If not, it looks like there's plenty of people around here willing to take my spot. I appreciate all the work doomy is doing to accommodate everyone, but it's damn near impossible to line up 12 schedules.

Mr. Arrowhead 08-10-2009 08:59 AM

everyone acts like the draft is gonna last more than 6 hours, i do about 4-5 leagues a year for the past 8 years and i have never had a draft last more than 2 hours and that includes leagues with IDP's

Old Dog 08-10-2009 09:15 AM

nobody said it was GOING TO last > 6 hours, but it most likely will last >3.5-4. I don't think I've ever had a 12 team draft go in under 2 hours, and I've been doing this online (will only speak about online, as live drafts tend to run longer) for about 15 years. You must have tons of folks on auto pick.

Mr. Arrowhead 08-10-2009 09:20 AM

nope most drafts i do have most of the people there, there is no way it would take 3.5-4 hours unless most of the people take up their whole time every time they pick. Most of the drafts i do, every one usually make their pick in the first minute.

Old Dog 08-10-2009 09:22 AM

30 second clock?

Old Dog 08-10-2009 09:24 AM

12 teams and 20 rounds even at 30 seconds per pick is still 2 hours, and more often than not a team takes >30 seconds to pick

Mr. Arrowhead 08-10-2009 09:25 AM

Quote:

its usually a 90 second clock, but just because you have a 90 second clock dont mean you take the whole 90 seconds. Most people usually pick between the first 30-60 seconds

Old Dog 08-10-2009 09:32 AM

If most pick between 30 and 60 (say 40 on average, since that' would be on the low end of the scale), with 12 teams and 20 rounds, then the draft would last 2 hours and 40 minutes, not under 2 hours as you previously stated.

doomy3 08-12-2009 09:30 AM

Updates (I also just sent a PM with payment instructions)

Draft Date finalized for Sunday September 6. From what I could tell, no one really had a problem with that date. I did move it one hour earlier, so it will start at 7:00 PM CDT so hopefully we end a little earlier. Worse case though, if you need to get out when the draft is still going on, you can get through the first part and then autodraft after that.

Payment for the league due by August 30, but try to get it in as soon as possible. Also, please shoot me a PM and let me know how you will be paying.

League Payouts will be:

First Place: $200
Second Place: $75
Third Place; $25

I'm not done tweaking scoring yet, so if there is anything on the site that you would like for me to look at, please let me know.

I am plugging everyone's email addresses into this right now, so you should receive an email here in a bit with the random draft order. I guess that's how it works anyway. Check your email that you used to sigh up for the league here in a bit.

I will also update this thread with the order, and will also update the thread starter and league page.

Old Dog 08-12-2009 11:16 AM

One other thing I see that jumps at me on further review: 2 weeks per round in the playoffs will mean that the Championship game (1/2 of it anyway) will be played in week 17 when many teams will likely be resting starters for the playoffs.
Was that intentional?

Buck 08-12-2009 11:29 AM

I haven't gotten an email yet, and also I vote no on week 17, if we are voting.

Old Dog 08-12-2009 11:32 AM

It's really 6 of one/half a dozen of the other to me, just curious.

No E-mail for me either....C'mon Doomy, now you've got us all ramped up to know where we draft.

Buck 08-12-2009 11:33 AM

Yeah week 17 affects everyone, but if it must be, then it must be. I've never done a 2 weeks per playoff round. That should be fun.

Old Dog 08-12-2009 11:39 AM

I've done the 2 weeks per round, but not in week 17....that league had an odd setup though:
12 teams - one division
six teams to the playoffs - top two receive byes
play each team once for a 11-week regular season
Wildcard round was week 12
Semi-Final was 13-14
Final was 15-16

No, I just haven't adjusted the schedule yet. There won't be any matchups in week 17. I'll get to that here shortly.

As far as the draft order and emails, I am still waiting on email addresses for a couple people, so if you got a PM from me asking for your email address and haven't responded yet, we are all waiting for you.

I can't do anything until I can plug everyone's email address into the generator.

doomy3 08-12-2009 04:09 PM

OK, we were only waiting for an email address from "whoarethechefs," but since everyone is waiting, I am just going to type in my other email address, chad@cmd-sales.com for that team. That team name is Tuscon Cactus Pricks for everyone's info.

So, all that to say, the email addresses and team names have been entered, and I will be hitting submit as soon as I finish this post.

Look for the email with drafting order in a minute or so.

I will also be updating the thread starter and the ESPN site.

Pretty good opening pick for me. I still haven't signed up in the league. I've been incredibly busy, and the 4 people on this site who read my posts can attest as I have made 6 posts in the last 5-6 days. I promise I'm in, I'll get signed up, and I'll send payment here very shortly.

Really? How did you find that? That's the last week. I'd be curious to see how many I've had since, say, 08/08/09. I'll bet it's a fraction of that, never know though. Maybe a light day for me is 15 posts a day.

That sounds like a good idea, except give everyone the option. For instance, ask #4 if he wants to move to 3? If yes, move him up then ask #5 if he wants 4, etc...

Waste of time.

I'm already in 3 leagues, which are very competitive. Last thing I need is to waste time researching IDP's for the draft, and then scouring the waiver wire during the season.

But to each his own.

Enjoy.

OK, found someone to take Hootie's spot.

Barret, a member since 2004 on this board, will be playing instead. He has already sent his payment via paypal, and we now have a full league.

I moved Barret to the #12 spot in the drafting order. If anyone who was at number 4 or below DID NOT want to move up a slot, then please let me know and I will readjust the order. Thanks.
