Serious question - without the hair, would he be considered a certain hall of famer?
He was one of the best safeties in the league for perhaps 5 years. But with the way reporting on the league is done today on entertainment value and players as personalities and things to market, it probably did a lot for his notoriety.
He was certainly not better than Ed Reed. Who's the best safety in the game right now, probably Earl Thomas? He's better than Polamalu was. Other guys like Lawyer Milloy and Rodney Harrison I would take in their prime over Polamalu in his. They don't have the notoriety at this point, but TJ Ward and Eric Berry probably are just as talented. Jarius Byrd is probably someone who has had just as many years in the league as an elite player, on performance not on reputation.
Some players get the benefit in HOF voting of being a media darling based on where they played or being seen as a 'colorful' person. Jerome Bettis is a prime example.
I guess it goes back to "Who should be a hall of famer" and whether or not you feel like they are letting too many people in these days. I don't think guys should get in on the basis of having 5 or so elite seasons. The bar should be higher.
