Former Vikings safety Husain Abdullah won't be returning to Minnesota -- or any NFL team -- in the near future.

The 26-year-old has turned down several contract offers, including one from the Vikings, to fulfill religious obligations, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. Abdullah is a Muslim.

Abdullah's future in football is uncertain, but he could return to the game after his pilgrimage.

Undrafted in 2008, Abdullah played four seasons with the Vikings Minnesota and started 24 games, making 127 tackles and four interceptions. He has struggled with concussion-related problems in the past two years. His 2011 campaign was reduced to nine games because of concussions, but a Pittsburgh-area specialist

Abdullah told Vikings officials a few months ago he was considering retirement.
