Because it's not. It's the playoffs, no different than the Chiefs-Colts wild card game last season. If Seattle & Oakland have to go tomorrow, that will be a "play in game" and not the playoffs.

Because we don't think of it that way for the NFL.

It is absurd to have 4 games out of 68 teams for "round 1", but its fine for 2 out of 10 or 4 out of 12.

That's pretty much what I think of it... don't have a problem with two wild card teams, but it's dumb to play 162 games (or 163) and then have a one game playoff, especially since wild card teams used to get a full series and have made noise in the past.

It's not like the NCAA, where the play-in teams aren't going to win a championship and will rarely do much at all. You have one or two teams capable of making some noise in the playoffs and one is gone after one game, in a sport where the best teams only win 60% of their games.

I think the intent was to give the highest seeded division winner that the WC winner has to play some sort of an advantage. More rest, one less game, etc...,

MLB thought that the Wild cards were making too much noise. Wanted to reward the Division winners more.
