Though you're right that they don't go ape shit crazy like dogs do, my cats freak out when I've been gone for a while. It's just that it wears off after I've been back for 30 minutes or so. :)

My cat doesn't jump up and down run around like a crazied lunatic throwing slobber everywhere when I get home. But he does follow me for a couple minutes to get his head and ears scratched. Meows a bit, then goes and suns himself or murders a rat or two.
