We all need to start using the phrase "beryllium sphere" more often around here so that we can move up the rankings.

No, they're real. Beryllium is an element, but it's commonly used as a hardening element in alloys, most notably beryllium copper.

I am trying to make it a "Sober 2007" I'm successfully eight days through it. AND sitting on this board late night is giving me the pavlovian urge for a St. Pauli Girl.

Specifically toward polishing beryllium spheres, it seems that if you want to polish very hard metals, such as beryllium, cryogenic treatment helps reduce the standard deviation of hardness. However, best practices would dictate that you polish them between copper v-grooves with a <1um diamond slurry, perferably oil based. Best finish would be with 0.25um mono, or poly crystal diamond. The v-groove depth should be one third the diameter of the sphere (in your case, about 0.026" deep for a 2mm ball).

If you have one in a metal alloy bottle that's been hardened using beryllium I'd say go for it.

Dude, it's the off-season. How f**king cool would it be if ChiefsPlanet of all things was ranked #1 in Google when you searched for something highly technical and esoteric like "beryllium sphere"?

You know that would leave a world full of nerds scratching their heads.

Might baffle the Homeland Security folks too.

Ok, if we're going to do this we need to be technically accurate.

Elemental beryllium is a steel grey, strong, light-weight yet brittle, alkaline earth metal. It is primarily used as a hardening agent in alloys (most notably beryllium copper).

The more random the place the better. It takes more "skill" to hijack a thread that is meandering than it does to hijack one with a specific purpose.
