Bring in a guy like Alex Smith who has played extremely well the past two seasons, and even if he doesn't work out you still have at least a guy that brings leadership, doesn't make mistakes, 18-5(19-6 w/ playoffs), and 2 of his last 4 games were about as perfect as you can have. 18/19 for 233 and 3 tds, 8/9 1 td his game he was hurt and his 300 yard 3td game against the Bills in which he was nearly perfect as well. Not to mention leading the league in completion percentage, QBR, td/int ratio (remember 3 of his 5 were in one game in which he had a broken finger).
This idea that the media has portrayed on Alex has obviously gotten to fans here. Alex may not be an explosive QB that everyone wants but he is no Matt Cassel. With him being coached by Reid running a WCO in which he has plenty of experience, with him having Charles as a RB with a decent line, I think Alex could win your division for you.
If not at the very least you have a stop gap that is better than any of these other guys I've seen mentioned. Alex has 2 years in a row of playing well, Matt Flynn has 2 games. Matt Cassell? Go ahead and stay with him and see how far you go.

You might want to sit down before reading this...
Chiefs fans do not give a FLYING fuck about winning the division. Chiefs fans are sick to death of having a team that is good enough to win a division (if the schedule breaks right and there are no injuries) but has no realistic shot of winning the whole thing because it has a caretaker at QB.
Yes, Kansas City would probably be a better team on Day 1 next year with Alex Smith at QB than Geno Smith or anyone else available. Yes, Alex Smith is a proven commodity who isn't going to hurt you.
But he's also not a guy who can WIN games for you in the playoffs. He's not going to lead a team to comeback victories when elimination is on the line.
He's good enough to get you to the dance, but he's going to step on your feet once you get there.
KC has had its fill of QBs that fit that description. Especially ones who used to play for the 49ers. It spent the 90s locked into that cycle, and came away with absolutely nothing to show for it (except for AFC West titles in 95 and 97, woo).
It's about winning the Super Bowl. You win the Super Bowl with Qbs who can make plays in today's NFL. Gunslingers who can make things happen. Not game managers like Alex Smith, who can be successful if they have great running attacks and defenses around them.
So, yes, Chiefs fans WOULD rather roll the dice on Geno Smith at No. 1 overall (BTW, if you haven't noticed, he's creeping up draft boards) and his upside as a potential franchise, upper tier guy, than trade for Alex Smith and rely on his proven floor and nonexistent upside.
Geno Smith can be the guy you need to win in the playoffs. Alex Smith can not.
We, as fans, are aiming higher than winning our division and flaming out in the second round of the playoffs. And it's about goddamn time the organization did, too.
