Clay, if you ever do pick up a console, get Red Dead Redemption.

Best single player experience I've ever had.

Buck 11-24-2011 04:58 PM

What's so funny about that?

Buck 11-24-2011 05:01 PM

In fact, I wish Skyrim used horses the same way RDR did.

I finally bought a horse and then killed it because it moved no faster than I did.

Wrong. Horses can gallop. And they are far better at climbing mountains.

I just did a test.

I ran from a sign near Whiterun Stables to the nearest farm.

On foot it took me 25.0 seconds.

On my horse it took me 23.5 seconds.

Buck 11-24-2011 05:12 PM

If you don't believe me try it for yourself.

I'm wearing Archmages robes, btw. Not sure if that's considered Light Armor or not.

Hammock Parties 11-24-2011 05:15 PM

Did you press the gallop button for the horse? There are three different speeds for a horse.

In any case they are worth riding for the mountain climbing alone.

There's also a faster horses mod.

Yeah.

Anyway, you should ride horses for roleplaying purposes. BUT YOU WOULDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT, WOULD YOU CONSOLE WHORE?

Buck 11-24-2011 05:23 PM

Yeah, well you know what is stupid, I can't shoot arrows or use my ****ing destruction spells while riding a horse.

RDR was all over that. Plus your horse had a clear stamina meter.

I'm curious how they expect console growth to halt when it's been growing at approximately the same pace as PC sales. Especially considering we're in the 5th-6th year of the current generation consoles, with new ones coming out in 2012-13...

Hammock Parties 11-24-2011 07:40 PM

Because consoles are for maggots.

Frazod 11-24-2011 08:47 PM

I like the precision that comes with using a mouse over a hand-held controller. That's the main reason I prefer the PC.

keg in kc 11-24-2011 08:50 PM

For the longest time I preferred PC games because they were (much) longer and because they cost less. Those days are over, unfortunately.

Although I think I will get thousands of hours out of SWTOR.

Mr. Laz 11-25-2011 11:32 AM

back to the game .......

fyi storing dragon bones etc in a dead dragon carcass doesn't always work. I killed one outside of Winterhold and left to sell some stuff. When i came back a few (game)hours later the dragon carcass was gone along with my stuff. :(

Yeah, you sure can. I refuse to use companions and can only carry 165 pounds (185 is taken up by my heavy armor, weapons and potions) right now so I get encumbered a lot. My horsie comes in useful.

SomeRandomGirl 11-25-2011 12:17 PM

I've not purchased a hose yet. Are there faster/better horses at different stables throughout the game or is one horse the same as the rest?

I miss my black steed from the assassins guild in Oblivion.

I have no idea. I bough the ugly mare in Riften because I was encumbered and had to get home to Whiterun. So far she has survived battles with wolves, saber cats, bears, trolls, bandits and even a dragon. Seems to be pretty sturdy.

hahah Ok I didn't even notice that. Regardless... I need only a good recommendation for a horse as my hose situation is all good.

I just got a laptop from BB last night and I'm having a lot of typos so far while typing. I think my fingers are adjusting to the slightly smaller keyboard. Or then again it could just be my utter exhaustion from standing in that line for too many hours.

Frazod 11-25-2011 12:55 PM

I'm really paying the price for not getting enchantment training earlier in the game. I have my skill level up to 98 now, but I was in the 90s before I found the guy at the Mages College, and he couldn't train me further. There's only one other trainer, but I think you might need a female character to utilize her since she's in that temple in Markgraf (either that or they're pissed because I stole that statue from them :D ). Either way, it's just taking forever to get through these last few levels to get to 100 and the double enchanting perk.

Oh shit. I just got a rude lesson in enchanting.

They're pretty tough. Build up your archery/ranged attack and find a safe spot to attack from afar.

They're also a wonderful source of filling grand soul gems. So are the mammoths.

You can also restore health by using healing spells.

Pants 11-25-2011 05:46 PM

Level 24 and I can successfully melee a giant now. Just have to watch the massive attack and dodge in time or it'll drop me down to about 20% of my life and then I have to spend time running around healing myself.

One Handed Tree:

4/5 in Armsman (does 80% more damage with one-handed)
2/3 in Hack and Slash (axes do extra bleeding damage)
1/1 Fighting Stance (power attacks take 25% less stamina)
2/2 Dual Fury (dual attacks are 35% faster)
1/1 Savage Strike (power attacks do 25% more damage with a chance to decapitate)

I'm also wearing 4/4 Flawless Orcish Armor (I know, this needs to get better).

P.S. Decapitating fools with axes is just ridiculous. My favorite one is when I kick them, they go down on their knee and I scissor-cut the head off. It can happen in both slow-mo 3rd person view or real-time first person view.

They can also use their offhand so pay attention to that. It won't smash you, but it'll still one-shot you at lower levels.

Sofa King 11-25-2011 06:57 PM

Coolest thing I've seen yet: I'm walking about in the open prairie. I had just got done beating 2 Mammoths and 2 Giants at the same time. Took forever. Turns out the little room in the ground i opened by solving that damn fish/bird/snake riddle is Giant and Mammoth proof. Dumbasses.

I leave there, and boom, Dragon.

I think SWEET! So i take off on foot to get near him. At that time he hammers the ground with fire off in the distance. I'm like wtf? Turns out he hammered a Mammoth. Then that Mammoth, a Giant, and 2 wolves all team up on the dragon and kill him (i saved just before so i could come in next time and get the final shot.

Then the mammoth and Giant take out the wolves, then come after me. ****ers! They didn't make it far. Mammoths hate Fireballs and Firebolts.

Pretty sweet seeing the teamwork though.

Sofa King 11-25-2011 06:58 PM

Depends on what you want to specialize in. Check the stats for the various races.

I did my first couple of hours as a dark elf and then switched to a redguard. Probably would have been better off sticking with the dark elf.

The Franchise 11-25-2011 08:24 PM

ran out and found a pack of wolves and just stood there for an hour and let them chomp on me.

after that an enchanting session from hell

Here is a list of the characteristics. Depends how you want to play the game.

Bosmer (Wood Elves), excel in stealth roles and archery.

Altmer (High Elves), excel in magic roles, to the point where their physical combat suffers.

Dunmer (Dark Elves), are good with swords, bows and destruction magic.

Argonians have natural resistance to most poisons and diseases, and can breath under water. They are also good in stealth roles.

Bretons are excellent in magic roles, and don't suffer as much physically as the Altmer because of it.

Imperials are good light infantry, with good social abilities, making them good for merchant type character builds.

Redguard are brutal fighters, able to stand blow for blow with all but the strongest of enemies.

Khajiit have superb agility and stealth, making them good for assassin/thief builds, and can also see in the dark.

Orsimer (Orcs) are powerful fighters, I've always prefered to use two handed or blunt weapons when playing as an orc, mainly because it adds to the overall appearance of the character.

It's just buggy. I had several crashes today, including a couple that completely crashed the computer, not just the game.

Should get better as they come up with patches. Until then, it's just another day in Skyrim.

I've had one crash on PS3. The game also starts really starts suffering from FR issues if you've pumped 30+ hours into a character and have a 14mb+ save file. Bethesda has already addressed the issue and promised a patch soon.
This is typical Bethesda though.

MMXcalibur 11-26-2011 02:18 AM

Think I'm going to go with 1-Handed Swords over 2-Handed Swords. Taking that much damage with Light Armor isn't good for my health.

...and I prefer not to go the Heavy Armor route as my ability sneak and snipe with the bow would be destroyed.

Dude, you have a disease. Go to magic and go to the very bottom and look at your active effects. Guaranteed you have some kind of disease. Get a potion, drink it, and they'll stop telling you you look sick.

Awesome reward at the end.

Also, I'm not sure how many people noticed this but it took me a LONG time. There is a carriage next to the stables in large cities that will take you to most of the major cities in Skyrim.

I haven't needed any form of water breathing anything in this ES game.

In the others it was useful, but I'd rather take other race bonuses. I'd rather have 25% magic resistance or 50% fire/frost resistance than an ability that, so far in this game, appears useless and can easily be found on an enchanted ring/necklace.

Kajiit, however, have the +15 in unarmed combat. So with a high heavy armor rating and the perk that turns your gauntlet rating into an attack rating... they can have attack ratings of 80+ without a weapon. As far as the beast races go, the cat folk get nod in this one.

I dunno...

I always stop at alters and cure myself.

I can cure myself and then talk to an innkeeper and they tell me I look sick.

Do I need to rest after curing myself? I haven't figured it out. There's something that causes them to say it even when you're not sick.

Also, I have had no crashing problems at all on PC. This game has been considerably more stable than Oblivion plays on my system right now.
