Royals Sign Brayan Pena To Minor League Deal

Former Royals catcher Brayan Pena is returning to the organization on a minor league contract, reports FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link). The deal comes with an invitation to spring training for Pena, who previously played in Kansas City from 2009-12.

Pena, 35, had been sitting on the free agent market since the Cardinals released him Nov. 28. In doing so, the Redbirds had to eat the remaining $2.5MM left on the two-year, $5MM deal they awarded Pena in free agency last offseason. Lingering knee issues weighed down Pena during his stint in St. Louis, where he collected just 14 plate appearances.

As a member of the Royals, Tigers and Reds from 2009-15, the switch-hitter batted .262/.303/.355 in 1,805 plate appearances. Defensively, Baseball Prospectus has given Pena positive overall grades as a pitch framer, though he has fallen into the negatives in recent seasons. Pena has also thrown out 28 percent of attempted base stealers during his career – just above the 27 percent league-average mark.

Barring injuries, Pena is unlikely to see much major league action with Kansas City this season. The Royals’ starting catcher is eminently durable standout Salvador Perez, who has played at least 138 games in four straight seasons, and they gave backup Drew Butera a guaranteed $3.8MM in November.

**** that fat ****er in his ****ing face.

That dude got $5 million guaranteed and literally spent the entire offseason eating. He was SHOCKINGLY out of shape in camp, unsurprisingly got hurt, didn't take his rehab seriously, came back and immediately got hurt again (like, in 3 games), went back on the DL and then said he was going to retire and join the army. "Knee issues weighed him down...." No, weight issues wrecked his knees. Lazy, selfish, cocksucking paycheck player. Eat a dick.

I've never seen anyone so blatantly say "well I got my money, to hell with actually earning it". It's not my money and it won't ultimately make a difference in how the Cards are constructed, but I have a visceral loathing for that asshole and I hope his hips explode in his first spring training AB.

You've been very fond of the last two catchers we signed to minor league deals.

Maybe they can overachieve this season.

Looks like PECOTA revised that projection from early this morning. It's now 71-91.

FG with an article why Hammel didn't cost more.

1. He's 34
2. He threw his slider a ton last year, worrying teams
3. His 2H era and ops career numbers = much higher than 1H, like third highest in last 15 years. No value after ASB and hence playoffs

Volquez had his share of red flags when we picked him up in 2014. We have to hope that Hammel can continue to ride the wave of his good fortune through next season.

Goddamn I hope we paste the walls with Detroit.

I want to win the division then the World Series but man to I want to wax the floor with Detroit.

Unsmooth-Moment 02-08-2017 05:33 AM

I think those are fairly realistic predictions. I do think we will still finish 2nd. Detroit had a pretty bad winter and they are another year older.

Detroit is no longer relevant to me. They're our bitch. All that money they spent to get all those star players, yet they couldn't finish the deal. We did. It will take them winning the WS(not gonna happen anytime soon)to get over how the little Royals won a title and they didn't.
