Oblivion with Tom Cruise was actually pretty damn cool, easily the best thing i've seen him in since forever... its a visually striking movie not only for effects but just the cinematography, a very engaging story, one of the better sci-fi movies i've seen in a long time.

When Cruise can be icy cool and calculating, he's still actually very good... its when he's asked to show some kind of human warmth that he falls flat for me, he hasn't been able to show that kind of feeling since Jerry MaGuire.

And finally, Mud... its freaking GREAT, just rush out and get it, easily the best thing McConaughhey has ever done imo, that's the review, check it out.

If you haven't seen it yet, you should watch Jack Reacher.

I rented it a while back, gotta admit i didn't care for it, maybe i just didn't give it enough of a chance, i probably gave it about 15 minutes and it didn't pull me in so i started puttering around the house and making phone calls.

I'll end up re-renting it one of these days i'm sure.

Mud on the other hand, i just now basically demanded that my mom watch it right this minute.

Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band on Netflix instant! I had almost forgotten this movie existed. Bee Gees, Frampton, Aerosmith, Steve Martin and George Burns sing the Beatles!

I watched Bernie with Jack Black on netflix. I suggest you check it out, it was pretty entertaining with a crazy plot.

Finally got around to watching the last Bourne movie today - you know, the Bourne movie without Bourne in it, except for photos of Bourne. And even though Bourne wasn't in it, it was like I'd already seen it three times before. Evil government goons with unlimited resources try and fail to catch super spy and his girlfriend, with tons of car/bike chases in exotic foreign locales. Shocking! Darn, I guess I should have used the spoiler tag.

It was an entertaining film, but could we even get a shred of originality in these ****ing things?

If you're looking for originality, the fourth movie in a franchise probably isn't the best place to look.

Checked out The Iron Lady this afternoon, incredible movie, I was drawn in instantly... Meryl Streep is in another league entirely, there isn't an actress alive who's even close to her and as a matter of fact, i'm really not sure theres a living male actor in her class.

She totally owns that role, you'd swear she WAS Thatcher, the scene where she lights into her own cabinet is just incredible, that lady could reeeally chew some ass.

Theres also plenty of that famous dry Brit wit thanks to the role of Dennis, her husband, he's worth a few chuckles throughout.

My one and only complaint is that at 105 minutes it was too short, I could've easily watched another hour of this.

BigBeauford 09-16-2013 03:44 PM

Daniel Day-Lewis is the male equivalent.

Jodie Foster or Nicole Kidman would run a very distant 2nd place, Streep is in a class all her own.

I watched Oblivion this weekend. While I figured I would enjoy it from the premise of being sci-fi with likely great visuals I was a little surprised just how much I did. The plot is a bit derivative but everything is put together so well with the execution that you really don't notice.

I loved this flick.

I'm a sci-fi nerd but really this is a story about two friends and how that relationship changes when they're given power.

The wife and I watched Don Jon yesterday. A damn good movie. JGL is really solidifying himself of a top-tier Hollywood talent, and he knocked his directorial debut out of the park. The cast all did a good job, and JGL showed some definite style in his dramedy about a man who watches a lot of porn.

Evil Dead was absolute trash.

The Purge - I enjoyed the movie. I really like the concept of it too, but I thought it could have been better.

Hangover 3 - Let's be honest - this should have been done with after season 1. Two was terrible, but 3 was much better than 2.

Zombie Hunter - I liked this one. A much more fresh take on zombie movies. It was different.

Three was horrible. It doesn't even make sense considering they don't get hungover. Only time I laughed the whole movie was at the end with the boob job scene. Two is bad because it takes hangover 1 to another level of stupidity and immaturity and it's basically the same story line, but it has it's spots. Three is just boring.

It had its moments.

But, wasn't close to being as bad as the second.

That's the bad thing about these type of movies -- everyone compares them to the original. You want it to be funny, but not the same recycled shit from the previous two.

Glad I rented it though and didn't see it in theaters.

I was overwhelmed with how good The Descendants was.

I need time to ruminate, but it seemed more than a good movie, edging into an era defining classic.

I won't spoil it here, might make a separate thread at some point with my thoughts, but it really put a nuanced and original touch on an aspect of our culture that's really hot right now without preaching or even taking a stand. Just presenting a story that is very moving.

Great. Goddamn. Movie.

I saw it having not heard of it. While not terribly happy or uplifting it is an incredible movie. I'm not all that much of a Clooney fan, although he is good in a role being "cool". This is far far outside of that caricature, and he killed it. This with Gravity, I may have to change my mind.

Starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, Reese was in it maybe 10 minutes, 5 minutes she actually talked.

No dialogue between Matt and Reese, no scene together actually.

Matt can't do a movie unless we runs around with his shirt off, Reese didn't do us the favor.

I bet he smashes some cars and buildings fighting some kind of supervillain. Then he prevails, but not before a secondary character suffers a tragedy.
And he probably has some internal conflict that he needs to talk about with a hot chick.

It's worse than I remember.

Have you seen The Descendants mentioned above?

Doesn't seem like many have, for an Oscar nom/winner.

Also, the Raid 2 thread reminded me how much mindless fun The Raid was.

If you want a great drama, the former.

If you want mindless cool carnage, the latter.

Two good movies that couldn't be more different.

Given that Olympus has Fallen is on Netflix, I gave it a WTF watch last night. I like Gerard Butler and knew it was going to be a god awful piece of shit going in, but I still didn't adequately prepare myself.

The Macguffin in that movie is one of the most poorly researched, illogical plot devices ever. Still fun to watch Butler do Butler things, but there were dozens of  moments.

No, you're right.
Even back then, the consensus was 1) Diane Lane is hot, and 2) boy a lot of stars came out of that.

It's overly stagey. Some material works as a stage play brought to screen, but The Outsiders wasn't one.

Then I might be a bit biased as my 8th grade Lit/English teacher got visibly moist teaching S.E.Hinton's stuff, and I was like c'mon, it's watered down West Side Story, which is watered down R&J.

I watched The Outsiders this weekend. it'd been so damn long since I'd seen it I had forgotten a lot of it. now I know this movie is considered a classic....but damn....not a very good movie. actually laughable in some parts. quite the cast, but I just didn't think it was very good.

Did you watch the original version or the director's cut? Not that it improves the acting that much, but it certainly provides a better idea of what Coppola was trying to do. It has alot of scenes the studio cut out for fear of homophobic reactions even though they are clearly about brotherly love. He was really playing with what a young adult story/movie can address but the studio just wasn't on board, and while all the actors end up with considerable career success, they were cast to sell Tiger Beat magazines, and they shot the whole thing in no time at all so not much rehearsal time. I think there is still some success in bringing a unique perspective to film (and literature with the original novel.) It is a teenage girls perspective of bad boys so it is ultra-romanticized and prone to being overwrought, but it has a genuine appreciation of the struggles boys face growing up.

For his next one, Rumble Fish, shot right then as well in Tulsa, the studio backed out so he was on his own plus they added great veterans like Dennis Hopper and Laurence Fishburne to compliment the young cast. It is even more theatrical and stylized and was critically destroyed except for Ebert who loved the risk and originality. It goes the full distance he was trying for in The Outsiders, and was way more successful visually. Critics in retrospect have come to judge it as an art film instead of a teen film and rate it much better. I would recommend Rumble Fish for sure over the other one. It is one of my favorite movies, especially to look at.
