Too bad Leigh Brackett is not with us anymore, their work on Empire is some of the best screenwriting ever done.

Actually Leigh Brackett worked on many of my favorite movies. Empire, The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo.

Badass Digest are the latest to add to the rumours that Abrams threatened to walk over Arndt's script. They suggest Lucas's whole outline may have been abandoned.

This is what I was referring to when I said that Abrams "won".

I have a hard time believing that longtime Lucas confidante Kathleen Kennedy would allow Abrams to dismiss George's outline for 7-9, unless he and Kasdan came up with something mind blowing and brilliant. Even then, it's a stretch.

I think you're misunderstanding Kasdan's role.

He's not there to write or create a story. He's been hired to interpret George's story and write dialogue for the characters.

No plot points, not the story line, just the script based on an existing story.

I was thinking the same thing. Crazy if true, but seems... unlikely at best.

Is that still true though if they've thrown out Arndt's script? Will JJ and Kasdan be true co-writers on this new thing, whatever it is?

The word is that they're changing some parts and "polishing it". Unless they completely trash it, Arndt will still get screenplay credit.

Personally, I think he was a bad hire. Toy Story 3 is a great movie but it's too sentimental in comparison to a Star Wars movie. Same with Little Miss Sunshine.

It just seems like the wrong "tone".

Oh, interesting. I'd read reports that Arndt's script was being totally thrown out and that he was no longer a credited writer:

Lucasfilm has revealed that Toy Story 3 screenwriter Michael Arndt, previously attached to script Star Wars: Episode VII, is no longer a credited writer on the project. Instead, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams will tackle the screenplay.

But that could be misinformation or bad speculation. If you're hearing differently, I'll take that.

So who's story is this? George's? Abrams?

I can't say conclusively that my peeps are wrong and they're right, or vice versa.

At this point, I'm not even sure that it matters because Abrams is clearly in full control and will likely do whatever he pleases.

Originally, it was George's story. He outlined everything that's supposed to happen in 7-9. Michael Arndt was hired to turn this story into a screenplay, with Kasdan in an advisory role.

From what I understand, Abrams was unhappy with Arndt's direction. Abrams began publicly pitching a fit, as I noted months ago. I'd been hearing there would be some sort of public announcement the past few weeks and it's clear that Lucasfilm chose Abrams over Arndt.

Where it goes from here is anyone's guess. I haven't received any confirmation as to what's happening with the story.
