It's not a huge deal for the Chiefs. Keep negotiations open, and if an extension can be reached, then do it. Otherwise, make use of the franchise tag, provided that Justin Houston has received his extension before the time comes.

That gives the Chiefs two years of negotiation time with Alex, and he only gets slightly underpaid for one of those years. And like Charles, if he wants more money now, he should make sure the extension happens sooner rather than later.

Or, just quit ****ing around and draft a QB or develop one of the young guys we have and save another $17M instead of using the franchise tag.

Damn, I almost feel a little bit let down.

There was all this tension and rape and AIDS brewing up. And now it's all gone, but not ceremoniously. It's like feeling a huge buildup in your bowels and letting all of that discomfort out in a quick, silent fart that doesn't even smell. I'd almost be disappointed if this weren't such great news.

I mean, given that we're far more likely to be staring at 6-10 than 10-6, that absolutely makes sense.

In any case, it's a good reason why the Chiefs should let Alex play out his last year of the contract before talking about extensions in the Joe Flacco/Colin Kaepernick range.

If they let him play out the last year of his contract, an extension is not an option.

I just don't think the way to develop our young guys is by throwing them out to the wolves. They aren't Andrew Luck. They could greatly benefit from watching Alex Smith.

I'm glad they struck a deal. Sad that a RB is our most important player, but it is what it is. Hopefully we can still get away from the deal if the wheels fall off in the next two years.

Time to pay Houston, and as ChiefsCountry said, close the checkbook. If we're going to spend money, spend it on the young players that might still be here when this team can legitimately compete for a championship, and not the guys in the twilight of their careers.

Great. They can do that this year and watch Alex play out his contract.

I'm assuming the franchise tag will come into play in that situation, given that the Chiefs are extremely far apart with Smith right now.

Trade him to a real team, if the Chiefs are not serious or strong enough to contend! :p
