He was just a waiver claim. Could mean Cain is going on the DL

Beat me to it. Excellent platoon option.

other POS to throw into the mix in the OF

still leaves gaping wound at 2B

did they just make a move so they could say they did something?

He's basically a better version of Frenchy

Justin maxwell. 348/488 vs lefties. To royals.

Interesting.

Looks like he crushes lefties. Well, OK. Hope we actually use him that way, and that we didn't give up much.

tyton75 07-31-2013 01:17 PM

6'5" 220 lbs... and he's not up for arbitration until after next season. Hits lefties pretty well. Not a terrible addition.

I hope Chris Getz. Go with Tejada/Johnson at 2B.

5-OF alignment. Maxwell gives them more thump against LHP, which is needed.

It would be interesting to go:
Gordon
Maxwell
Hosmer
Butler

Against LHP and see how the top of that lineup produces.

penbrook 07-31-2013 01:19 PM

So we need a Second baseman and we get a #4 Outfielder. Classic Dayton Moore.

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:19 PM

I assume we're platooning him with Lough. David doesn't have much of a split, but Maxwell's split is huge. He's pretty bad against right-handed pitching.

Except Maxwell takes walks. Lots of them. Similar otherwise (big, good power when connecting, has done well against LHP in his career).

I'm good with this trade - I actually like it. I wanted a Power Hitting OF, and a platoon guy works in this scenario. We still need a 2B, but I certainly don't think this falls under the "Classic Dayton Moore" mantra.

penbrook 07-31-2013 01:24 PM

Maxwell has also struck out 33 times in 40 games.

These stats are weird. Strikes out a lot, but also walks a ton. Might have power depending on if 2012 was real. Murders lefties.

penbrook 07-31-2013 01:31 PM

Per Bob Dutton we gave up minor league pitcher Kyle Smith.

mr. tegu 07-31-2013 01:31 PM

How is his defense? I wonder if he will be more of a pinch hitter than a straight up platoon player.

Prison Bitch 07-31-2013 01:31 PM

Trade deadline is always dead, and will be until young cost-controlled players start making more money and vets start making less. Since this won't happen, the e(x) for young players adjusted for salary will continue to be sky high and hence un-tradeable.

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:31 PM

If Cain has trouble coming back, then if you staple Dyson and Maxwell together, you might have a decent outfielder.

Cephalic Trauma 07-31-2013 01:32 PM

He could debut tomorrow against Diamond.

Big difference between picking up a guy off waivers and shipping out a lotto ticket (what I expect happens with Maxwell) and what the Giants would demand for Pence (if they're even really moving him).

I'm not as into the minors as Duncan or some of you other guys, but that doesn't seem like a good deal for us

Kyle Smith was a fourth round pick in 2011. He is pitching 2.85 in A ball

Don't really like this. guy is in single a but still has great era numbers

tyton75 07-31-2013 01:36 PM

Well.. I still don't HATE the deal, but I like it a lot less considering Kyle Smith had a lot of promise. But trading a guy in A ball for a guy that can help the Major League Team now.. I'm ok with.

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:36 PM

Well, that..... is certainly going all-in for 2014.

Smith has some value. He's physically maxed out (small and polished) but could be an effective end-of-rotation starter. Has put up good numbers at every level of his career and was - predictably - having a nice year in Wilmington.

I don't mind moving Smith to improve the major league roster, but they gave him up for much less than what he was worth.

Jesus. Smith has more long-term value right now than the main pieces in the deal that acquired Ian Kennedy. He's a GREAT second or third piece that is usually a key part of completing a bigger deal.

tk13 07-31-2013 01:41 PM

Well I was dreading a Zimmer for Kendrick type move, so this isn't so bad relatively speaking.
Posted via Mobile Device

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:41 PM

You have to keep in mind that our A+ team is in a pitcher's park, and in a pitcher-friendly league. So high-2 ERA isn't as phenomenal as it may look, but still. Even though the failure rate for that type of pitching prospect is pretty high, it seems like an awfully steep price to pay for the right-handed half of an outfield platoon.

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:43 PM

So, did someone whack Cain's knee with a crowbar last night or something?

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:48 PM

Lets call the defense a wash. For 2013, we may have gained about +.150 OPS for maybe about 80-100 AB. To the nearest tenth, how many wins is that worth?

Mr. Laz 07-31-2013 01:51 PM

i don't want a young guy Dlough to platoon

penbrook 07-31-2013 01:52 PM

Justin Maxwell says he was surprised by trade but eager to get to Royals. Said he needs blue spikes.

Zimmer is untouchable. I expect him to break camp with the team and compete for a rotation spot next Spring. It would take something fierce for Dayton to move a guy who's going to the rotation very soon. Part of me thinks he could help the big league club right now.

Cephalic Trauma 07-31-2013 01:57 PM

Well he was 2.0 war player last year, this year he is at .4

alnorth 07-31-2013 01:58 PM

This feels like the move a GM would make if you told him that he must make the playoffs by the end of 2014 or he's fired.

Quote:

johnsickels ‏@MinorLeagueBall 6m Smith/Maxwell is shocking. Really. That would get vetoed by some fantasy commissioners

siberian khatru 07-31-2013 01:58 PM

Weird. Cain supposedly was about to come back to the lineup (although we know how that works with the Royals).

If Cain's going on the DL, the trade makes sense. Otherwise, we have 5 OFs, and that would suggest a Maxwell-Lough platoon with Dyson as a Herbie Washington, or occasionally spelling Cain vs. RHP.

I dunno, that kinda seems too fragmented for me. We'll see.

jbwm89 07-31-2013 01:58 PM

I've always ready Smith probably ends up in the bullpen. If that is the case we have plenty of bullpen help I don't mind moving one that is in A ball.

Not the trade I was looking for, but i think Maxwell helps the team if Cain is hurt long term and is better than Dyson.

0.3 wins.

tyton75 07-31-2013 01:59 PM

He's a Right Handed bat who hits lefties really well, has some speed and some power.. why wouldn't we want him for a smallish pitcher in A ball?

Yeah, this immediately raises questions about Cain.

duncan_idaho 07-31-2013 02:03 PM

It's about the smallish pitcher's value.

I don't mind moving Kyle Smith for big-league help. I mind moving him in an overpay.

alnorth 07-31-2013 02:04 PM

The trade deadline has passed.

Which doesn't really mean much for a couple hours. Most years, at least 1 or 2 trades take another hour to be known if they were submitted to MLB for approval in the final minutes.
