View Full Version : Hell Week at the most Mean-Spirited Frat in the World

Twelve pledges stand at the lobby of a frathouse looking weak, pale, and dejected. The Pledgemaster stands in front of them all. He is pacing.
Pledgemaster: You guys have been sleeping on our front lawn for a week now. No showers, no food, no friends. Just the brotherhood. You've earned enough respect for us to take you through hell week.
Pledge Ben: I thought that was hell week.
Pledgemaster: Leave. Congrats to the final ten of you.
Pledge Alan: There's eleven of us.
Pledgemaster: Goodbye. Welcome to the real final ten.
Everybody starts clapping.
Pledgemaster: Hell week is gonna be brutal. There's no doubt about it. Point blank: Hazing sucks. But don't worry: No gay stuff. No forced-drinking.
Pledge Calvin: Awesome.
Pledgemaster: Calvin. You're being very talkative today. Why don't you take out your cell phone and have a nice little chat with your mother. Call her and tell her that your little sister has been in a car accident.
Pledge Calvin: I don't have a little sister, sir.
Pledgemaster: Then Rory, call Calvin’s mother and tell her that her precious son is dead.
Rory begins dialing.
Pledge Rory: What's her number?
Pledge Calvin: No. Wait.
Pledgemaster: What's wrong Calvin, don't you want to join the phattest parties next semester? Sweet friends and cheap booze?
Pledge Calvin: No. I do. I totally do. It's just that... can I call her right after and tell her it was a joke?
Pledgemaster: You can call her at the end of Hell Week.
Pledge Calvin: Umm. Okay. 510-4999.
Pledge Rory's dialing.
Pledge Rory: Nobody's there.
Pledge Calvin: Great hang --
Pledgemaster: Leave a message.
Pledge Rory: Hey Mrs. Calvin? This is Rory. I'm in the same frat as your son. He died this afternoon. Alcohol poisoning. Bye.
Pledgemaster: That was very presumptuous of you Rory. You and Calvin are not in the same frat yet. Calvin has earned his keep, but you haven't done shit.
Pledge Calvin smiles.
Pledgemaster: Rory. Call your grandmother and ask her for $10,000 ASAP. When the money arrives I want you to take a video of you setting it on fire and send it back to your grandmother with the note: Thanks for nothing, Old Bitch.
Pledge Rory: Done.
Pledge Franklin: This is absurd. You guys are so mean.
Pledgemaster: Excuse me. Pledge Franklin. You realize other frats would make you eat chocolate until you puke. Walk around naked and spill beer on you.
Pledge Franklin: Yeah, that's fine. I'd rather eat chocolate than embarrass my grandmother. Or convince my own parents that I was dead! I mean you guys are insane!
Pledgemaster: Would you like to join Alan and Ben? Or do you want to get on the VIP list to our sweet ass Wonka party this spring?
Pledge Franklin: I mean... I guess I want to stay. It's just, this is, getting a little crazy is all.
Pledgemaster: Franklin. Look one of your co-pledges in the eye and break their knee. It could be anybody. Sacrifice one for the good of nine. The brotherhood will grow strong. The knee will then heal faster with the strength of solidarity.
Pledge Franklin: No. Absolutely. No way.
Pledgemaster approaches Pledge Franklin. He gets nose to nose with him.
Pledgemaster: You realize all pledges get the sweetest dates to every mixer. Plus they get to rotate being bouncers at our Winter Bikini Party.
Pledge Franklin: I'm sorry. I can't do that. I wouldn't even know how to, sir.
Pledgemaster: Leave.
Pledge Franklin walks away.
Pledgemaster: Sounds like one of your "brothers" isn't very committed to the brotherhood.
Silence befalls the room. The mood is sullen.
Pledge Victor: My buddy said his frat made him finish three gallons of ice cream. He said it sounds delicious but it was pretty horrible after a while. Can't we just do that? You choose the flavor.
Pledgemaster: Ice cream? This is Hell Week, pledge. Not 31 flavors. But here's one: Cookies n' Call your girlfriend and ask her to marry you. Tell her you never loved anybody like you love her and that you want to prove it to her by making a promise. A promise to be hers forever. Tell her that every moment you spend with her makes you realize more and more how empty your life would be without her. Then, don't talk to her again until hell week ends, explaining that this whole thing was a practical joke for the brotherhood.
Pledge Victor: Can I just do the mom thing?
Pledgemaster: Absolutely not.
Pledge Victor: I don't know if I can do that. I've been with my girlfriend for three years now, I don't want to mess things up.
Pledgemaster: Two words for you: Chicken Nuggets. Every Tuesday. As many as you want, as long as its not more than ten. Plus we're probably getting a Wii.
Pledge Victor: I can't. I'm sorry. I know this frat is awesome but I can't do that to my girlfriend.
Pledgemaster: Nobody has ever refused the brotherhood.
Pledge Victor: Not true, Franklin just left 5 minutes ago because --
Pledge Franklin comes running at Victor's legs at full speed. Victors knee bends backwards and a loud snap is heard. Pledge Victor is on the floor writhing in pain, yelling as loud as he can, his leg below the knee is going in the wrong direction
Pledge Victor: AHHHGHGGG!!!! OKAY FINE!!!! GIMME THE PHONE! IM CALLING HER NOW!!!!!!
Pledgemaster: Everybody take five. This is going to be a long week. When we reconvene, I want everybody to get ready to upper deck some urinals at the childrens hospital.

Yeah, fraternities are cool. I joined one last semester, but I got alchohol poisoning during one of the "non-hazing" incedents...
I dropped out of school for personal/medical reasons, and so i never was a fully member...but i'm an "honorary" member now, and when i go back I'll rejoin.
We never had to do any really dumb shit, i was friends with all the guys before I pledged, so when they tried to degrade me I just laughed. The rest of the pledges got it pretty rough though. But they were all dumbasses and didn't belong in existance.
They did make me call my ex girlfriend and call her bad names, that was sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

I was in a frat during my undergrad and we only had one guy who was really weathly and he kind of got a hard time for it sometimes. I feel most frats have lost their true purpose of community service and real brotherhood, I was thankful for a frat that was like that.

Your post is the perfect example of why so many people think that Greeks are worthless. So many Greeks actually buy into their own hype and are convinced that the rest of the campus is jealous of them and wishes they could be like them. I was in a major fraternity at a major party university for two years before quitting the fraternity. It's hilarious to see Greek life from both sides.

I'm not trying to buy into any hype. I lived in a fraternity for 3 years and it was a lot of fun. Sure I didn't always have the freedom I have had this year living in an apartment, but I don't regret it.
Listen, this is an argument that won't go anywhere. Some of my best friends didn't join a fraternity, and we don't think we are any different from one another. I just think its ridiculous how people see a couple movies, hear a couple horror stories, and suddenly think they know everything about Greek life.

The reactions to Greeks are pretty freaking violent, I agree. I went from being pretty involved in Greek life to being a total non-conformist, anti-establishment, Deadhead who thought they were the pits. The truth is somewhere in between. I pledged with 45 other guys who came from all walks of life. I had to bond and become best friends with a truly diverse group of people. That was a very valuable experience, not to mention I had quite a bit of fun. On the other hand, the ongoing dues are ridiculous when I wasn't even involved in Greek life any longer. To expect me to continue to pay $500 a semester, when I didn't even step foot in the house for a semester was outlandish.
As for the reactions, I think there are a lot of different reasons. The fact is that some Greeks are self-important, self-aggrandizing rich kids with an obnoxious sense of entitlement. Unfortunately for the greek system, these also tend to be the ones that are most in-your-face about their Greek status. Thus, they come off as representative of the Greeks to the rest of the world.

Greek life will never be as bad as indeps. paint it or as benevolent as greeks paint it. It is what it is. Some people and houses do it right and some do it wrong.
Wasn't for me but I know a lot of people who were really helped out by some of the structure greek life provided.

Heh. I do think that another reason people get pissed at fraternities is that these guys, many of who party throughout college and never crack a book, go on to be "successful" later in life due to the networking that goes on in Greek life as well as the fact that many come from priviledged, well-connected families in the first place. Meanwhile, some poor kid who busted his ass day in and day out getting all As leaves college with his liberal arts degree and goes on to work at Chile's as a dishwasher.

No doubt, here in Springfield the whole thing is kind of a joke. They are around and active but they don't have a lot of pull around campus and they don't have that great of parties or anything of that nature. sure there are "popped collar" greek meatheads, but if you think that greeks are the only ones that act/look like that you've got another thing coming..i knew just as many dumb f**k GDI's when i went to school as i did greeks...
i suppose most of these attitudes extend to all fraternal groups on general...do you think of the elks, freemasons, odd fellows the same way? they're in the same vein as most fraternities (at least when they were established)...brotherhood and service to their communities

Nice points.
I had a great time at my fraternity, and I wouldn't change a thing. Then again, it was college. I would have had a great time living in a cardboard box. It's this real life (post college) thing that sucks........

Zach strikes me as more of a Pinto.
He's the guy who can't figure out why people have a hard time liking him but blames it on jealousy and ignorance to make himself feel better.
Why do I read these posts?

You and Bluto need to take all their lame asses on a Road Trip to see Otis Day & the Knights.

Last one, but with Independent, not Infantry.

Depends on the frats. Most of the guys who are in the frats here at MSU are douchebags IMO. And it really can change people big time. I had some friends join the greek life and it really changed them. We used to hang out and have fun but now there life revolves around greek stuff and we arent good enough for them anymore. Really sad.
But on the other hand, my friend from Drury is in a pretty cool frat. Its the opposite of the sterotypical frat. None of them really act like frat boys and they throw some cool parties bascially to piss off the other frats.

Fair enough.
I really don't give a shit, to be honest with you. I haven't lived in a Fraternity in well over 20 years, so lots of things could have changed. I just find the whole "Fraternities are gay, fraternities are for rich assholes, etc, etc." all rather amusing.
Hey Chi....
It was really cool when you took your hot ass new doctor ladyfriend over to Ari's house and told him about your Stamps dot com stock jackpot.
